Back in the day, 1993, I could download a trainer program and I could give myself a million credits and I could be done with the game, which lots of people did. And if the group of people who wants that to be their game experience can subsidize the server costs for everybody else who actually wants to have fun with it, that's fantastic. Let's let them.

P2W vaporware.

Why aren't we talking about Elite: Dangerous instead? People got their panties wet about Star Citizen because of Chris Roberts, but when the father of the space combat/trade genre, and creator of the most ambitious game ever made aims to make an equally ambitious sequel, it's like no one cares.

What the fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>265528113

Err no, it's just a shiny version of games we've already got, it's awesome, but it's a simple PEW PEW PEW in space with some other shit tacked on.
>>

>>
>>265528113
Hello Adept.
>>
>>265528276
I suggest you take a closer look.

We don't already have any game like it, and it's every bit as ambitious as Star Citizen and then some. The only difference is that rather than trying to tackle everything at the same time, they release the core of the game and then aim to expand it with planetary landings, ship boarding, on-foot exploration of planets and the like.
>>
>>265528550
>expand
Surely you meant sell each new feature for $49.99. Fuck off with your DLC garbage already.
>>
>>265528653
There was a lifetime expansion pass available for $45 up until two months ago. Your loss.

Still, I don't get it. It's okay to pay $60 for the yearly multiplat rehash, it's okay to throw millions at a pipe dream, but when an actually good game asks for money, and aims to release expansions with more features and content than entire games contain, you shun it?

Can you possibly make less sense?

The worst part is how people now act like every space sim should have planet landing and FPS combat, basing their opinions on a project that's still a solid 2 years before a playable alpha. That's stupid, a space sim is just a space sim, both SC and ED are part of a whole new genre.

ED in its current beta packs more features and variety than pretty much all space sims, the only exception would be X games. In its initial release state, it's going to be the absolute best space sim ever made, and it's only going to get more glorious after that.

In its current state, sure.

But there's still quite a lot of stuff planned for release that we haven't seen yet: cruise ships for passenger carrying, player-owned asteroid stations, NPC crew that will be in the seat next to you, communication with NPCs, attacks from Thargoids (the game's aliens), exploration of space for resources and old alien relics...

We really haven't seen much yet, and it keeps getting better at every update.

It's planned that you can enter the upper atmosphere, for the purpose of scooping fuel on gas giants for long travels. They've shown some really nice volumetric clouds for this.

But in the current beta, it's not possible to even reach the atmosphere, so we can't really see how close we'll get to it.

ED is a space sim.
>>
>>265533841
Everyone is in the same galaxy, and has access to the same systems. Even if he is in a different instance, he can find the same system you can, and if he mines the resources in this system before you do, it'll affect your own, so you better get rid of him, or sell information about this system before he does. Still, that won't be a problem in most cases, because if you find a system, it means it'll be empty, you'll be alone in it, so any other player entering it will enter the same instance.

The cap is 32 players right now + AI, but it could increase depending on future network improvements.

Not really.

The game mostly focuses on you as a pilot, not as an industrialist or anything. All you can do as an explorer is small scale mining for small deposits, or selling the very valuable information about a large quantity of resources to corporations who can in turn build those stations and mine it all. You'll remain either an explorer or a small miner, but there's no X-like tycoon-type gameplay, you won't be the poweful CEO of a huge corporation, and you can't really be part of anything, only help make it real.

At least that's how they aim to do things at release. What is to come in future updates is yet unknown, and they might deviate a bit from that, but still, you should remain mostly a pilot.

Space Engineers already does space salvage better than Star Citizen could ever hope to.

Just trying to board derelict ships as they float through space is challenging, then trying to deal with the booby traps whilst restoring systems, latching on so you can cut worthwhile components out or even attempting to tow or retrofit the hulks to bring them back to base is fucking awesome fun.

As odd as it sounds, this seems to be what is already happening- just look at all the ED hate that comes from hardcore SC supporters. SC is still years from full release while ED is months out. It's like some folks aren't allowed to buy more than one game every 2 years...

I backed both and am having a blast with Elite Dangerous right now. SC doesn't give a shit about supporting my flight stick yet so I have only played it for a few minutes. I can see SC becoming great but they seem to be more focused on getting people to buy new ships rather than actually developing features (and why not- it's working) so it's greatness won't happen anytime soon. I'm sure it will eventually be a great game but I don't like how they're handling the pre-alpha.

Yeah, I don't know how much stuff they're holding back from the beta tests but there are supposed to be entirely new fleets of ships for each of the factions and I don't see that happening if there is only one new ship in next Tuesday's update.

If the main assets are built and they just aren't putting them in the Beta, that's fine. I can see them still tweaking how the procedural galaxy works and enhancing exploration and whatnot, but if they still haven't modeled the other ships, their full release will still feel like an advanced beta with weekly updates coming out and the game never feeling "complete".
>>
>>265536538

Same issue will face NMS.

Those round stabilizers, found on submarines, torpedoes, and some boat engines, are designed with water density in mind.

Also all of those ships would fall like a brick in Earth's atmosphere. Don't even get me started on how in a realistic space sim, planets would have different gravity, composition of the atmosphere, and possibly more powerful winds, which would make it fucking suicide.

With the usual developer, there would be reasons to worry, but not in this case. They have a habit of revealing some crude concept art of a ship, only to reveal the fully textured and working ship two days later, and announce that it'll be flyable the next week.
Game is much more advanced than it seems, and we already know that last september, they had all ships flyable with at least early models. Most of the stuff they tease us with has been completed for a couple months already and is only in need of "testing".

The beta is literally a "beta test". I think we can abandon all hope of seeing the entirety of the game in the beta, we'll have to wait for gamma to see it all.

It runs amazingly well

Well, it's a space game, most of the scenery is ships and a gigantic skybox with starts on it, planets are spheres, and only stations would have a lot of polygons, yet not much more than you would expect in the average Half-Life 2 map.

Don't worry too much, you might not max it, but it'll run fine.

Playing it on the Rift, the only places that give me noticeable frame drops are inside stations and asteroid fields. Some Star Citizen backers suffer from a post-purchase rationalization syndrome, and just can't like Elite.

Also many of them, probably most, are not really space sim fans, they only played Freelancer which is hardly a space sim, and are excited about Star Citizen because it's essentially "Freelancer but better".

Most of them also are too young to know that Elite created the space combat and trading genre, and that they should be equally excited about it as they are about another game by Chris Roberts.

Might be in pretty bad shape with that equipment as it's pretty old. Are you able to run modern games at reasonable framerates with it? Elite isn't anything too taxing but it is what I would consider on par with current-gen systems.

As of now, Elite doesn't even have a "Low" texture setting so the only way you're going to squeeze significant performance out is by lowering the resolution. If you want to just focus on trading, that's probably fine but any combat and you'll want better framerates / resolution.

ED is also going to be released at the end of the year, while SC won't have progressed the slightest by then.

>>
>>265540169
You can play the actual main part of ED right now as opposed to some small game modes like in SC. That might be what they're referring to.

If both games came out today in their current state, I'd absolutely say Elite is the better game. They aren't though. That's why I don't see a point to arguing which game is objectively "better". The means and methods of development are fair game for debate though, I think.

>>
>>265541303
Whether it's a commonly taught technique or not, I cannot say. That seems a bit odd.

I don't see a reason why anyone would ever start the chainsaw with it at your crotch but it wouldn't be a very big problem. Unless something's failed, you won't be sawing your cock off. Better safe than sorry though.
>>
>>265539421

Holy shit that was amazing.
>>
>>265541632
It's the only way you can hold it straight when you have no flat surface to hold it. Better have it between your legs than risk hurting yourself with it. By doing this, you prevent the chain from moving, reducing your odds to hurt yourself.

If any of the parts in a chainsaw fails, all that'll do is that it just won't work. The odds of one accidentally turning on are absolutely zero. They are designed that way.

>Elite Dangerous ships have exposed radiators that can be sealed for silent running.
Okay, that's cool.

But would it cause the windows to frost over like that?
>>
>>265543727
That's not really how it works.

In the above videos, he shuts down everything, engines, shields, sensors, leaving only life support, so the ship effectively doesn't produce any more heat. So the heat drops to zero.

Silent running is something completely different, it prevents heat from escaping by shutting the bllinds in front of the radiators, making you harder to detect, but not entirely invisible, plus you keep on building heat, and eventually the ship melts. Alternatively, you can eject your radiators from your ship, droping your heat in an instant.

"Silent running" isn't the same as droping your temperature, it's only masking it. "Cold running" is what he does in this video, and thus doesn't need to go into "silent running" and close the radiators because there's no heat to radiate.

So yes, those heat mechanics kinda make sense.

>>265545252
Won't ever go anywhere. Development was so slow that the modding community had to give the game basic content and building on that they went further and made a simulated universe out of the game. Now there's no incentive for him to update at all. The stuff he does (handfull of systems, 1-2 ships, shallow and static trading) pales in comparision to what mods already do. There's no reason to give him money either, development will never speed up and he'll drop the game once he's growing tired of it.
