I get the feeling that if AnR had been popular, it's the kind of series that could have been easily milked into several spin offs and sequels. Just looked it up, seems like it's also sold on dlsite and other places. Ch3 was released recently (http://www.dlsite.com/comic/work/=/product_id/BJ106126.html) and they finally added the Yuri tag (ch1&2 didn't have one). Nice find. Also looks like borderline H judging from the preview (It's tagged as softcore too). Haven't bought the chapters yet. Single chapters are sold on amazon usually when they're doujinshi.

Apparently the artist worked on it for a year, the manuscript ultimately didn't get accepted for publication despite the effort put into improving it, the artist started releasing it on the web, that version got some popularity, then a different publisher picked it up for release as tanks with more editing done to it.

I get the sense from the Amazon reviews that it wasn't good enough as a paid product in the face of the attention the web version and the story surrounding it got, leading to a backlash, including annoyance at a perception of unprofessionalism from the artist.

Not having a publisher is what doujinshi is. Some doujin projects do use crowdfunding.

I think probably the main thing about the mangaka to annoy the angry Amazon reviewers was feeling he used the sob story as a hard sell tactic to get money for something that wasn't good enough to deserve it on its own merits. I can't guess what difference crowdfunding it as doujinshi would have made. On the one hand doujinshi is usually held to lower expectations, but crowdfunding can also breed a sense of entitlement and can seem even more like a begging tactic than just putting a product out people can buy.

More bizarrely: the artist was originally known for ero doujinshi and one Amazon was apparently pissed off that he would always put up a ~10m poster with nipples and pussy on show at comiket ("an event that receives attention internationally as Cool Japan," as the reviewer put it).
