I was reading that clusterfuck in the former thread and came upon this. As I was thinking about debating it, I realized that I'm missing something important when it comes to Kyouko: the catalyst for her change of heart.

As far as I can tell, her arc is
>Selfish bully (defense mechanism after major loss and guilt regarding her family)
>Continually tries to "corrupt" Sayaka to show her that her ideals don't work, both through her words (revelation of family history, temptation of damaging Kyousuke to keep him) and her actions (various fights)

I've watched the show 2 or 3 times through now and I still feel like I've missed this somehow. The easy answer would be "love", but I want something a bit more concrete. What was it?

Basically, a combination of sympathy, loneliness, and a reawakening of her true self. At heart, she was never a sadistic hedonist; she was genuinely an idealistic and kind-hearted person. She went down the path of "loss hurts, so if I don't love anybody, I won't feel the pain of loss" as a reaction to the death of her family and shattering of her ideals.

At first, Kyoko simply views Sayaka as a naive idiot, but she comes to realize that Sayka's idealism is being broken similarly to how hers was, so out of empathy, she tries to reach out. She also begins to view Sayaka as a potential friend, in order to fill the void of Kyoko's own loneliness. When Sayaka refuses to let go of her ideals to the bitter end, Kyoko is inspired. She even explicitly states that Sayaka reminded her that she became a magical girl for the sake of love and justice. And some part of Kyoko realizes that when she sets out to save Sayaka, she knows she's doomed to fail, but success isn't what's important; rather, it's that she fought for the belief in good instead of conceding to cruel reality.

I figured that this was the main reason for the change of heart (and evident enough that I never got the people who doubted KyoSaya before Rebellion) but I guess I expected that there'd be a more specific moment.

Although I suppose there wasn't much time to show it, considering that We were already following 3 other main characters at that point

There are a few moments. The first is her inviting Sayaka to her church to explain herself. She's admitting to herself two things: she really does care about others and that she doesn't like depriving herself of companionship. Then there's the moment when she tries to help Sayaka fight a witch. Although Sayaka doesn't agree with her, at that point Kyoko knows that she at least understands her, and since she wants to be understood, she attempts to protect that. This morphs into empathy/love, so that Kyoko role-reverses with Homura in preventing Sayaka's death. And when she stops denying her sympathies, she even gets angry at Homura on Madoka's behalf when the former is completely nonchalant about Sayaka's demise.

It's a bit of a stretch, but one could justify these by saying they're part of her overall thematic/character arc. That is, it's not Kyousuke who's important so much as he's part of her whole

Agreed, that's an important point. Those episodes are chock full, and focus on Homu and Madoka. Probably why both Sayaka and Kyouko are dead by then, so that all the focus is on Madoka, Homu, and Kyuubey

Really, I'd like to see more of them being close in the story in general. I understand that it's the destination for Homu's horrific journey, but we never really got cute scenes between them. I'd take them even under the pretense of Homu's new world.

And for Madoka herself to notice? It means she'd been waiting for it patiently, making note of it, hoping to get closer to Homura - it's a good indicator of Madoka's love for Homu as well, which is sometimes criticized as being not clear enough (and thus, onesided on Homura's end).
