This has made me realise I should throw on some Jeremy Zuckerman music when I'm reading the actual comic.

So, with the sole exception the phoenix (made by/from Korra) every spirit remains a gigantic asshole? At least Mike is being consistent with the show. Admittedly, if humans start flooding in and demanding spirit welfare and raping female spirits, I'll concede the mountain spirit had a point.

This is still teasing; Korra and Asami having fun in a manner a diehard Makorrafag or salty /co/ poster could convince themselves is mere evidence of extremely close galpallery. Gonna have to wait for the official comic for something more verbal.

It makes some sense for Toph to be like that. After the way her parents treated her, all she wanted was the freedom to do as she pleased. It's not too hard to believe that she was that way with relationships, too. Either having multiple casual relationships or short-term relationships that she broke off if it felt too serious.

And since she didn't want to be the kind of parent her parents were, she let them do what they wanted and fucked them up. Suyin doesn't just want to do what she wants, she wants everyone else to do what she wants. Lin needed structure in her life, so she built her own and she made herself miserable by living within it.

Bryke's hard-on for bad parents makes sense for Toph, even if it's bullshit in most cases.

Wow, Book 2 drove you so far away from the series you hadn't heard about Books 3-4 being quality in the past 2 years? I mean, I can't blame you because Book 2 is utter shit, but I would think if you heard about Asami winning the Korrabowl you'd have also heard how good the back-half of the series was.

To be fair, Bryke was basically working season to season for the first 2 (though that makes Mako even more egregious in Book 1). I do think that if they knew they where going to have at least 3 seasons there would be more plot cohesion over the entire series. But I also think Bryke learned A LOT from the first 2 disastrous Books, and to their credit actually addressed most of their problems and improved by leaps and bounds. But I'm not 100% sure that if they knew they had an extended series from the get go that they would have produced quality content like we got for Books 3/4. So ironically, just like Korra, they basically had to go through 2 seasons worth of shit to become better, more self-aware, compassionate avatar--er, writers.

They might not have had that option. Sometimes networks will add caveats to their seasonal/episode orders - for instance we know for a fact that nickelodeon demanded a recap ep in Book 4 despite Bryke not wanting to waste time on that. (Not to mention nick seems to have been been reticent & stingy about LoK from the start.) It very well could have been that nick stipulated no open-ended finales for the first Book. It's just as likely as them pushing for Mako. Now this doesn't absolve Bryke of the truly terrible writing when it came to the Book 1 finale/Mako, but there could have been underlying reasons the situation happened in the first place.

And quite frankly, despite the disappointments of Book 1 & 2, Bryke did address some of their big mistakes the following season. Book 2 completely trashed Makorra - arguably the biggest detriment of the first season. Unfortunately they added way too much plot and tried to cater to every character, which ended up a disservice to ALL the characters, especially Korra. Then they learned from both seasons, and we got an excellent Book 3. So yes, Bryke performed terribly Books 1/2, but they've proven they can learn and improve, and that coupled with the fairly strong showing in AtLA makes me give the benefit of doubt that the whole Books 1-2 mess isn't ENTIRELY their fault.

I do think the success of AtLA's clip show factored in, but considering how much they hamstrung LoK throughout, I'm betting money was the key factor. Sadly yes. There's no avoiding this. But there's a short reprieve where we get Raava backstory which is the highlight of the Book imo.

She does. While Book 2 generally backslides by the end things do settle and improve a bit character-wise. In the next books is where we see a lot of her growth and change in action. The issue seems to be that you're looking at each Book individually, which if you were watching live is understandable. BUT the series is over, you have the opportunity to view it AS A WHOLE, knowing that what you get in Book 2 is merely another step in the journey. That criteria you're looking for in an adventure story? It's there in spades, you just have to finish the rest of the series.

The first few chapters were good (more like about average but still), but I couldn't stand the rest. Think I stopped reading after ch10 or so.

Suffers from that old problem most fanfics suffer when they time-skip. The characters act different from what they did in the original (as if they had *gasp* character progression or something) yet still talk exactly as they did, probably for fear of ending up diverging too much.

Just rewatched Beginnings 1 & 2 as part of my full rewatch, and that is the case.
Perhaps he went into the spirit portal during the two weeks after Kuvira was defeated and got himself fucked up in there, and now blames Korra (which was the style at the time)?

If it's any consolation, it's entirely focused on Lin being self-destructive, Mako's involvement is a bonus because it continues his trend of ever doomed relationships while not letting him anywhere near Korra.

Mike is smart enough to understand where the interest is. Without Korrasami, LoK doesn't get a a continuation. Asami has been pushed as second only to Korra in all the marketing materials and even the covers. While we're definitely going to get lots of wacky Bolin (he is everyone's favourite, after all), Asami is nailed on to have events happen that matter for her sake rather than for others'.

We had two seasons of both Korra and Asami developing interest in one another.

I was kinda dissapointed how the show handled KorrAsami tho, I dunno, it felt underdeveloped.

Given that everyone here had expected a friendship end at best, despite everyone having spotted the subtext and been excited about it, I'd say that we got a pretty good end.

Even after having her shit pushed in by love and honor, she still thinks that fear is more powerful so she's trying to antagonize Zuko by being a thorn in his side from afar.

And in the latest comic that is focusing on the Water Tribes, apparently a huge discovery of oil was made in the Southern Water Tribe and the North wants to take claim to it because the North wants to respect the spirits and not put their stake in industry and break from tradition like how Unalaq started preaching about...oh you mean the North is full of hypocrites? Well that changes everything.

Not that I don't want Azula around but this seems like such a low stakes plot given that we know Zuko is still well respected and had passed his power onto this daughter come LoK. So it's not like she can fuck him up too much, right?

Depends on the author. If they want characters to hold the idiot ball and forget their development, then anyone can be a threat regardless of the stakes.

The seeds for discord can still be there. Zuko may have had a great record and pass things in a easy fashion over to his daughter but much like how suddenly bending was hated by all of the nonbenders in Korra's time until it suddenly wasn't, anything can develop.

They should have had Azula make a power play for the throne by threatening civil war. Instead we got Ozainites lead by Mai's farther.

Seriously though, the Fire Nation should be in civil war. There could still be a nation in exile in Karra's time, but I doubt they can do anything that would undermine Zuko's glorious reign of peace. It could be the reason he advocated in the first place.
