These days, crack ships usually refer to a ship that makes no sense story-wise, like say, Dva/Roadhog or Tracer/Junkrat. They only exist because a few people think they're good together for whatever reason. A /u/ example would technically be Dva/Mercy, because they've never met in-story or demonstrate awareness of each others existence, mainly because Dva is hanging out with Symmetra and Pharah in the "Completely isolated from everyone and everything else in this plot" zone and will probably remain there for a while.

Non-canon ships, also referred to as fanon ships sometimes, are ships with a firmer grounding in the lore but aren't happening for some reason. This is where Pharmercy would be.

As for canon, I believe the only active ones we have right now are Tracer/Emily and Torb/His wife. Everyone else is either ambiguous (Ana, Jack, Reyes are the poster children here) or single/not remarked upon.

This is true, however we do know at some point in future, D.Va is going to join the new Overwatch. It remains to be seen which already existing Overwatch members she is going to form bonds with but I still wouldn't call all existing D.Va ships "crack ships" the same way like shipping Torb and Bastion is a "crack ship".

I'd argue if these can even be considered "ships". The point of 'shipping' is having two characters you like and wishing them to become a couple, isn't it? Korrasami for example is a canon ship. Or Clexa/Shoot. If you only learn about one of the character's existence after the fact, then there was never a chance to ship them with anyone to begin with. Torb's wife (who doesn't even have a name, poor thing) or Emily seem more like pieces of world building to expand on existing characters ("look, Torb has a big family!" / "hey, Tracer actually likes girls!") than characters.
Now if they revealed Ana and Jack have been in a relationship all along, that would be a "canon ship" since people came to know both of them seperately and many like the idea of them being a couple.

Fucking idiots abound on the net where, in their mind, there's only canon and crack. There's no in-between. It's largely not present in the great non-canon sea that is Overwatch currently but it pops up enough in other fandoms and the like that crack has started to get associated with just being non-canon instead of what it actually means. The ignorance is really infuriating since it's a very black and white method of viewing subtext or maintext and could effectively strangle any sort of creative effort. i.e. despite all of the subtext in canon that puts them a skip away from maintext, they get thrown in under crack and can be equated to just crazies deluding themselves. WT would be like the best OW-related one I can think of at the moment. The strangling creativity bit is speaking in a more extreme sense.

If anything I will say D.vamercy is straddling the border between non-canon and crack. We can infer what will most likely happen in the future because of how everything is set up, and that they could be some degree of friends but taking everything at face value there's nothing connecting them and may not be for some time. It's roughly similar to Sombra/D.va though that ship is probably a little more on the crack side of things.

As for Pharmercy, I don't know, it's obvious in Chu's mind Mercy is Gengu's trophy wife, but it's really not clear if all the subtext he gives Gency are just that or he actually plans to expand that into something.
Hetfags are first to scream "canon!" but even with the Chocolate interaction it's far from being confirmed and maybe that's all he ever meant, to tease them because it's a ship he likes. We don't know.
Then there is the backslash and even people who don't even give a fuck about shipping slowly getting fed up with the story going at snail pace and lashing out at the idea of some nonsense romance subplot when half of the cast haven't been properly introduced and we don't even know their place in the story.

I'd prefer something revolving around the purpose of the map objective.

Like there's a story to most of them. Gibraltar is the attacking team trying to launch a communication's satellite, as a parallel to the Recall short with Reaper and Talon attacking Winston. Eichenwalde involves the attacking team attempting to reclaim von Adler's body and armor. Numbani is of course, escorting Doomfist's gauntlet. Route 66 is Overwatch attempting to put down the Deadlock gang. Or in Hollywood, protecting an omnic director from anti-omnic hate group attacks.

You can think of it kind of like how America's Army handles the whole enemy thing, where one team is Overwatch heroes, and the other team in-game is also represented by Overwatch heroes for the sake of gameplay, but story-wise represent a different entity(e.g. the Deadlock gang).

But then there's King's Row, where the attacking team is escorting an EMP to the Underworld, and they start in an Overwatch base hidden in a church. Why the fuck would Overwatch be trying to holocaust the Omnic population?

The king's row works better if you think of it in reverse despite how the attacking team seems to start in a ow base. Talon/Mercs/Anti-omnics are the one attacking and the ones defending are Overwatch/whatever. Although is Attack team's start point an overwatch base? I know it's in the church but I didn't think it was specifically overwatch, just a run down church.

Nothing about the church suggests it's an Overwatch location. What happens in the maps has no relevance to lore whatsoever. They can tease stuff on them like they did for Sombra, but the actual actions of the two teams are just game stuff.

I am really surprised how hard they have hit with the seasonal stuff. I am actually not enjoying this event, because I am just sick of cosmetics I can only use once per year.

I am really praying that they do not make another holiday comic, it has been since july since we have gotten any story. I am just so sick of the fact that they insist on just running in spot. Why even pretend they have a story if they are going anywhere with it?

I can see the reuse, but the first one they did was olympic themed. Also if they were this intent on doing seasonal they should've been working on that like out of the gate along Ana and Sombra. So things would be in place freeing up time when the actual holiday rolls around.

They could've just had generic computers which they have assets for, or literally nothing since it's not like every starting point needs to make functional sense as a "drop zone". They start in a diner in Route 66, and a tavern in Eichenwalde.

The extensive use of Overwatch computers laid out in a particular way makes it feel more like King's Row's Overwatch safehouse and not just some random abandoned church with computers.

I really didn't expect so many seasonal events, at this rate they're coming out every 2-3ish months? We still haven't gone past all the characters' introduction phase for the eventual "Avengers assemble!", and they'll be adding even more characters which is just going to further complicate things and add more questions

Don't know how I feel about that. While I love more stuff, World of Warcraft suffered from the fact that a lot important stuff began being told in the novels instead of the game.

Well, Overwatch doesn't really have any other choice, unfortunately. A single player campaign constantly getting updates for new lore stuff would take way too much money and resources.

WoW was a little different because they could've put that stuff in the game but didn't. Overwatch is multiplayer only, the only place they can advance the story is outside the game itself.

This is assuming they even want to advance the story of course. That said, I have noticed a lot of new voice lines in the game recently in prematch banter. Dva and 76 have an interaction now that only demonstrates that Dva needs better comebacks, and Winston has an interesting one where he says someone will stop 76's illegal activities, and 76 shoots back that him and all his friends are up to illegal shit as well and there's very little difference between what they're doing in the eyes of the law. McCree also has some new lines but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

Even if they finally get around making some kind of single player campaign or a PvE mode that expands the story the game will never rely on it being told in game. So unless you are fine with scraps of banter and a new map/character every few months as the only means of getting story progress there's really no other choice for them to tell the story in a consistent manner.

Although I could see them expanding the franchise into some sort of spin off games, be it single player FPS or an (MMO)RPG at some point in the future if it keeps being the success it is and bringing them tons of money, but that's far off if it ever happens and I'd like more story right now.

I thought that was the entire point of releasing a separate comic. So resources would not be steered away from game development and we could get regular plot updates. I understand that they are only promotional material, but why hint at a larger story if you are not going to make it. Heck, I would be happy with text updates like Mei received.

Lines of banter are kind of lackluster for telling story, but its not like its impossible. I would cite the Halloween event as exactly what they could do to advance the story in the game.
