KLK was their first "big" on going after the majority of their leads left Gainax. Most of that same team did work on PSG, TTGL, Dead Leaves, and others I'm definitely missing. And particularly PSG was super western animation inspired, with it's art style being a clear send up to Powerpuff Girls (they even had a small background cameo), a whole episode dedicated to Transformers, Ren and Stimpy also had an episode, there was (another) South Park art style scene. Ursula returning or being revealed as Chariot is definitely going to have main plot significance in some way along with the Shiny Rod. The broom is likely to show up again based on its prominence in promotional material. The pace is certainly laid back, so it's more of a matter of taste. There are shows that don't start their plots for dozens of episodes.

The episode wasn't half bad, too soon to judge If Andrew's going to be more than a future ally of the protagonists.
The scenes with young Chariot were heartwarming.

The writing based on the ovas, the previous episode and how these two(three with diana) characters interacted. It was the right amount of "Will they or won't they?" without actually making any effort to show it will be anything more than just a possible crush, if at all.
