i guess it could be seen as a chicken or egg situation? like lack of yuri -> community is shit. or shit community -> lack of yuri? i dont quite believe that though.

yuri is already niche as it is, so there will be less anime of it. id argue the opposite of OP actually, there are tons of subtext-y, pseudo-yuri, girls-being-slightly-close-to-each-other anime that really isnt yuri. and yet we are so starved so when that shit comes out we lick that shit off their boots, analyzing it from 1000 different angles, trying to squeeze out any bits of yuri from a honestly non-yuri work.

By Japanese standards, these are all yuri. How explicitly the relationship is shown to be is not an indicator of what they consider yuri and what they don't. In fact some Japanese yurifan would go as far as to argue that past a certain point - like on-screen lesbian sex - then it's not yuri anymore. For example, I remember the guy behind Cross Ange (I know) saying that the anime wasn't going to be yuri but would be rezu instead.
