I feel that many fan works fail at portraying Maki correctly. Her awkwardness vs Nicos hidden maturity is just about the best thing about this pairing but so many authors make Maki out to be the mature and responsible one. A want to see more stuff where Maki exposes her insecure side and Nico has to go full reliable senpai mode.

Nico is flighty, goofy and self-centered but is more mature.

Maki is much more reserved but is awkward and kind of naive.

Yes they do. It always irritates me when Maki is shown to be the the dominant one in a relationship when her default reaction to doing anything is blush, make excuses and do her signature hair twirl. I'm 4 chapters in and it's pretty good, although I'm sad that it seems to going down the line of "Maki gives up on becoming a doctor like her parents want and pursues her dreams of being a composer".

Lots of fanfics have Nico constantly away as part of her idol job, but would it actually work like that? Japan isn't that big a country, and a third of the population lives in the greater Tokyo area, which is also the center of their entertainment industry. You'd think Nico wouldn't have trouble making it to home most days.

I tend to prefer fanfic for Nick and Mack, because half the fun is them trying to sort everything out and it takes too much space for a doujin.

That said, Karuha's No, 1 is great. I'm not normally a big fan of supernatural elements, but the way it combines them with a certain amount of social realism is pretty unique and gives it a heartwarming subtext.

I like the structure and progression of the first story, like, from a technical perspective your writing is pretty good.

Though, I did feel a little disconcerted by how blunt Nico was. Like, it seemed weird for a character that even you acknowledge is rather evasive, to be so blunt.

Generally Nico is a character that only makes complete sense when you learn to read between the lines and I think by avoiding that, you actually lose out on creating additional ambiguity, which I think would only be of further benefit to your story.

Like, even at the end, I think it might have been better if she'd stopped just short of explicitly clarifying everything - partly because it should by that point already be obvious what she's grasping at but also because Maki (sometimes, though not necessarily always) is capable of seeing beyond her facade and should be able to read the signs pretty well by that point.

Also, the scene with the manager is a bit weird. Like, it feels a bit light hearted. Which is slightly awkward given that you're trying to methodically build tension. Well that and when she talks about "taking the fight to her" it sounds kinda childish, why is it even a "fight"? And like, further more, is it necessarily a good idea? idols are expensive assets on which a lot of time and money is spent. Like, surely your biggest concern is trying to mediate any issues in order to prevent a fracturing of the group?

Unless, of course, you're taking a slightly more cynical approach, in which case, I suppose encouraging Maki to up her game and continue playing along with Nico isn't that unreasonable, given that sex appeal is potentially profitable.

Also, at the beginning of the story, it seemed kinda weird that Nico is so self-depreciating and overtly conscious of her own self. I'm not saying that Nico has no capacity for self-awareness but even if she is consciously aware of those factors, she shouldn't be the one to speak them because, more than anything, the thing that makes her most uncomfortable is speaking frankly and openly about herself and her feelings.

Likewise, Eli feels a little off as well. Like, you might disagree with me here but my general impression was that she was one of the few members who was most tolerant of Nico's bullshit, up to and including her "Nico-Nico-Nii", so it felt a bit weird for her to chide Nico. Really, I can't help but wonder, if anyone is likely to reprimand Nico, then it's probably Maki?

Lastly, this is more of a curious question than anything else. But is there a particular reason that the story doesn't resolve when Maki tries to kiss Nico in the dressing room? Like, "it's too late" in the changing room but then when Maki confronts Nico in the apartment, it's no longer "too late". Is there a particular reason that Nico doesn't change her mind then, when it should become fairly obvious what both of them want during the changing room scene?
