There is very little yuri in the show and when present it's only one sided, but Retoree is in love with Cyan. In her character song "Love Net Lady" she even states she's in love with her ’friend’ and it seems obvious the song is about Cyan. I say that because Retoree joined a band to make friends and assuming Retoree's only friends are her band members (and I guess that little cunt Rosia now) you can narrow it down to who the song is about. Also the Cyan and Retoree duet song Hazy Twinkle is pretty gay too.

If you want an anime that has yuri moments every episode, then this show isn't for you. If you want a show with cute girls doing cute things with a (probably) canon lesbian character whose primary cast pretty much rarely talk to the opposite male leads and show no romantic interest in them at all, then give it a shot. I mean the little moments Retoree has toward Cyan is already more yuri content then what some shows /u/ constantly post about has.

Though I am pretty much in love with this show, it's not that great of an anime and is more of a guilty pleasure. However, the music is great, visuals are pretty cute, and the CGI during battle scenes and musical scenes is pretty good.

The franchise lived and died by the anime.

First season was great enough and came in a Spring season that had lots of other great shows, and it was the dark horse that did admirably, because it was obscure, and nobody expected too much of it. When it did well, provided interesting character interactions and some goofy silly fun, it increased the mobage's number of downloads by a huge amount for a game of its size. Fujoshis got their male pairings, yurifags got Retoree-Cyan stuff. All in all, it was great for both sides.

And despite the renewal which cost some goodwill, people were still looking forward to the anime show a lot.
The second season then tries to make an even more impossible feat by introducing some extreme plot with space fleets and the end of the world.
But then it couldn't really deliver with its plot-bait, because it did focus more on character interactions.
Now the plot-thread (or plot threat) hanged like a Damocles sword over everyone's head, because seeing the cast going on with their life and doing normal stuff (even if they mention that it's always in training or preparation for the battle against the Queen of Darkness) against a danger that we the audience saw as someone fully capable of unleashing some death beam to destroy a city makes it jarring.

Add in all the problems like a far too large cast at this point (bloated because talent agencies wanted to use SB69's popularity to promote their seiyuus), too many songs (that sounds really weird for a music anime that ought to sell songs), decreasing the CG-lives substantially just in an attempt to please potential new viewers who might have been put off by the CG, and the anime does lose its way.

Oh well, what is done has been done.

Perhaps the manga series for the franchise can still somehow salvage it, or perhaps there will be later plans to rectify those situations where everyone analyzes what did rather not go so well.

But at least our ships still stand strong. No main characters showed interest in their opposite gender counter parts. That's good for both yaoi and yuri fans, well except for that one scene when Rom wished there were some girls with him at a spa in one of the shorts. It's really unfortunate that the sponsors went overboard with wanting to see their points of interests covered and put so much responsibility upon the shoulders of the anime to accomplish that all.
Dogpile more and more upon the horse, and no matter how vigorous it is in the beginning, it will trip at some point, especially when the anime also tries to please fans of the franchise who want to see their obscure favorite bands included.
We didn't just get two new bands, we got seven new bands for the second season.
Aside from two new antagonist bands Arcareafact and Bud Virgin Logic, we also got Ninjinriot, Dolly Dolci, Baiganver V, Gaugastrikes in addition to the other minor bands like Shinimonogurui, Shizuku Secret Mind and Uwasa no Petals from season 1.
Studdo Ban Gyasshu had only Lyna doing one line, so although they were also introduced newly, there wasn't any focus on them at all, and they existed as background fanservice characters for being a sexy girlband. That worked.
That is how it should have been done.

The Christmas event in the game this month shows Cyan wearing Retoree's Christmas outfit instead of her own. It's never said why, but it's pretty interesting they decided to dress her up in Retoree's outfit. She never changes outfits either.

Honestly not very. The only yuri in this is one sided with Retoree being in love with Cyan. However, Cyan is oblivious to this. In fact Retoree is the only primary character in the anime to show feelings towards another character; that character being Cyan.

Don't bother watching it if you're expecting numerous amounts of yuri. However, if you like cute girls doing cute things and music then give it a shot.

I'd like to add that both of Retoree's character songs are pretty gay as they seem to be about Cyan. Also the Retoree and Cyan duet characters song is pretty gay too.

The game has a bit more yuri subtext though. Those moments are mentioned earier in the thread.

This 4koma is from the Show By Rock!! All Characters Book, which is an official Show By Rock!! character guidebook. As you can see the artist is Chino Machiko, who draws a shit ton of Studdo Ban Gyasshu yuri art. There are six strips total featuring this band (all drawn by Machiko), but this one stuck out the most in terms of yuri.

It appears to show Cheety getting annoyed when she notices Lyna smiling at one of the letters. Fennely thinks to herself that Cheety seems jealous while Cheety says, "Hmm, She looks happy...", but with the addition of a shadow over her forehead showing her annoyance.

I guess you could interpret this in two ways: Cheety is jealous Lyna is getting fan letters, or Cheety is jealous that someone (more than likely another girl) wrote Lyna a letter that made Lyna very happy.


Since this is an official book that features art from Chino Machiko, I'll go ahead and say all art from Machiko is now canon. I'm also desperate.

Cyan and three of her band mates in the real world are the only character that represent others in Sound Planet. Oddly enough the keyboardist in the real world does not have a Sound Planet counterpart. They aren't mentioned in the anime after episode one and do not seem to be mentioned in the manga or game.

It's possible that the normal world-senpai thingy was just an idea that the director and scriptwriter were playing around with, since they did have practically carte-blanche to do whatever they want with the anime adaptation. Nobody expected SB69A to do all to well, so they were allowed to put their own spin and turn story-less cute animal-people-doing-cute-band-stuff game into a save-the-world isekai urban fantasy cyberpunk adventure.

There were early rumors that the first season was supposed to have 13 episodes, so perhaps the last episode would have been some sob-story epilogue where after returning home, Sian Hijirikawa would then meet up her band-members, be remembered of their sound-world counterpart, and learn the valuable lesson that music and happiness connects people across dimensions and all that stuff, but which was then axed early.

Stuff like this happens in anime production quite often, and SB69 was a low-priority project for studio Bones.

After two seasons and a short the only character from the primary cast to show romantic feelings for another is Retoree. I'd like to add that Retoree has a lot of gay moments in the manga and game. Rosia from Criticrista says some stuff about "onii-chans" a lot, but it's just for show. Though not in the anime, but in the manga Jacklyn from Criticrista may have started having a crush on her fellow bandmate Holmy when they went on a practice date together while Holmy cross-dressed. However, I doubt that story line will continue. The image here >>2252762 was inspired by that chapter.

For the characters A and Un their only yuri moments are in the short with one scene shown here >>2160927. They have a manga as well, but I have not seen any of it's contents.

In this thread there are a ton of pictures that feature Studdo Ban Gyasshu (this band >>2215562 ), but they only appear as background characters in season two with Lyna having the only (small) speaking role. They also appear in a chapter of the Criticrista manga, with one little yuri-ish moment in one panel seen here >>2161210 . However, in the game they have quite a lot of yuri undertones in their episodes which I summarized here >>2199520 . There is also a cute moment involving Retoree calling Fennely a rival for Cyan's affection here >>2199489 .

BUD VIRGIN LOGIC kind of surprised me with Peipein. She doesn't show any yuri tendencies in the anime, but in the manga she shows a clear obsession for Ailane shown here >>2248395 .

The new Lyna UR from the White Day event is Lyna giving chocolates to someone and is called 'Studdo-White Day! Lyna'. If one is familiar with White Day you might agree that this seems pretty /u/ related. If the card is also related to the event episode with Studdo Ban Gyasshu she might be giving the chocolates to Pig Macaroon. In which later Cheety gets jealous and cries to Lyna about it, but also ends up receiving chocolates from her as well. I can't speak or read moonrunes, but I believe the quote on it says something like, "Remember? This is where I first me you. From me, to you." Maybe someone can translate it better.

There was also a new SSR Lyna card from the event called 'White Day Shopping! Lyna' in which the quote reveals Lyna is shopping for Zebrina, Fennely, and Cheety. The quote says something like, "Is this fine? This for Zebrina and Fennely, For Cheety..."

Indeed. It takes place at an all girls school and the emblem on their uniform is a fucking lily. I am not making this up, you can see it in this picture. I do not know how much of the content is /u/ related, since I cannot read it. It didn't get very good reviews on Amazon.

The illustrator for the pictures in the light novel and cover art were done by Gumichoco. She's a yuri fan who wrote a few Ymir x Christa and Sayaka x Kyouko doujins, which can be found on dynasty: https://dynasty-scans.com/authors/gumichoko. The Show By Rock Official Twitter (@SHOWBYROCK) pretty much implied Retoree x Cyan is official. The post says something like romancing Plasmagica is forbidden, but within the band is ok. Sanrio did another tease for Retoree x Cyan on the official Show By Rock Twitter. It was Cyan's birthday and they used the hashtag #レトリーの事も大好きにゃん at the end. The tweet was just Cyan saying she loves everyone and that it's her birthday, but for some reason they added the hashtag #レトリーの事も大好きにゃん. Which translates to, "I also love Retoree! Nya!" or something like that. She already stated she loved everyone, but she wanted to make it clear she loved Retoree as well I guess.

Only a few weeks ago they had that other tweet about how it is forbidden to date Plasmagica, but Plasmagica can date each other. Which I mentioned here >>2321286.

The amount of yuri subtext has grown quite a lot within the game and manga after the anime ended. Shame this probably wont get a 3rd full season. It still seems to be somewhat popular for Sanrio fans since Show By Rock is ranked 5 out of 100 entries on the Sanrio popularity poll and Sanrio still holds Show By Rock events in Japan. So maybe an OVA is a possibility in the future.
