Did Amane and Hikari also had sex in the novels? I was reading some stuff about it and from what i understand the novels operate by the "the girls aren't lesbians unless they fuck" rule, and that Amane says at some point that lesbianism is wrong or something

My memory's a little fuzzy. iirc In the novels Shizuma said some girls were the lesbian until graduation type or didn't take their affairs cereal. The two main couples are the real deal though and get their happy endings. Unlike the anime Nagisa's the one who run after Shizuma, later they even joke about Shizuma marrying her in Europe. Amane and Hikari almost get intimate but Hikari remembers Yaya, and says she can't leave her friend suffering or some silly stuff.

Because there's that whole thing about the defition of "yuri" being pretty loose and that one of the popular definitions is (or was):

Yuri = Pure platonic love
Lesbian = Sexual attraction

So, if we look at StoPani as a Marimite parody (for example) it would actually make some sense, because StoPani is a "yuri" anime, but we can't go 4 episodes straight without a girl sexually assaulting another (or even actually having sex)

That's not quite accurate. In the manga, Kaori and Shizuma were already in a relationship, THEN Kaori got sick and subsequently died a bit later (late stage cancer, my guess). In the anime, Kaori enrolled already sick and was basically just counting down her days until oblivion.

One of my first yuris. Back then it was considered pretty bad in comparison to Marimite, so hence called a parody, with the umbrella episode frequently quoted for it.

I came across the scene in strawberry panic with the two girls talking about bees and knew I had to watch this. I was never disappointed more than I was with blood+ when I did find out it was all fan art.

Ten years and I haven't actually seen it. I've seen videos, official art, fanart, etc but haven't actually say down and saw it. It's still on my backlog.

It and Marimite helped set so many yuri standards, like how uke-seme relationships are in yuri or the all girls setting. It never quite stopped being seen as a "Marimite clone" but Strawberry Panic has a status amongst yuri fans.

I remember the first time I heard the OP back in 2006, the chorus hit and I couldn't stop laughing. The whole "admiration" thing was such a yuri trope even back then (probably more so than now, actually). I don't remember the novels implying that Shizuma and Nagisa had sex, though with Shizuma's characterization, it's certainly possible they did. She certainly tried in the anime.

Amane and Hikari are implied to have had sex though and were given ample opportunity to. If I recall correctly, they screwed up the part in the Etoile competition where they weren't supposed to see each other for two weeks and then temporarily ran away to live with each other for a while.

Strawberry Panic was like Marimite on crack.
Tamao deserved better.

I'm a Shizumafag but I like Tamao exactly because she doesn't back down. Spineless faggots who never try to win over the love interest despite adversity are the worst. Tamao is still somewhat spineless of course, since she never actually confessed, but still.

Lots of other romances have similar set-up and the LI eventually fall for the underdog, instead of the initial attraction. So it's not Tamao's fault for trying. She lost in a fair and square competition, and accepted her defeat gracefully.

I'm totally for ShizumaxNagisa too. I did like Tamao but it was obvious from the get go that Nagisa never had as much interest in her. As a friend? Definitely her closest one, but there was chemistry between her and Shizuma throughout the entire show that Tamao even realized at one point, see her peaking out when Shiz and Nagisa are practicing for the paly.

Being an armchair general and saying Tamao should have given up is such a shallow attitude. You're only able to spout such bullshit because you're an audience who know how THIS series will go in the meta sense. The characters themselves can't know that. The exact same relationship dynamics could have ended with Tamao winning, had this been another series.

Tamao fought till the end because she's not a quitter, and that's admirable.

I tried to play that game released on PS2, but I could not stand many of the dialogues (Oh, can I call you Onee-sama? It is so embarassing! Say it again!) and some of the characters were unbearable (and, for a weird reason, all my choices always led to them).

I only wanted to hook up with Shizuma, but I could only speak with her like a pair of times in all my game time.

I liked the anime though. It was over the top sometimes, but at least there were not obscure motives to like girls or they did not serve just as yuri bait.
