Speaking strictly from a gameplay perspective, it's an action RPG with Dynasty Warrior-style combat made on a typical small Japanese RPG game budget.

That's not to say it's all dogshit. Once the battle starts, magic, summons, and transformations will make pretty sparks all over the place. But it won't have that perfected feel of impact and weight that made action games like DMC or Ninja Gaiden popular and it wont have the enemy/boss types to match either.

The world is beautiful and has plenty of exotic views, but instead of the interconnected wonders found in the world of the Souls games, it's just flat maps and corridors in Nights.

The kiss is not just a CPR bullshit, it's akin of those meaningful kisses that usually happen at the climax of a fairy tale. So far in my experience this game is really trying the best to go beyond subtext.

They openly state they love each other, pretty much most of the NPCs support them too. When they got into a small fight the NPCs said they had a lover's quarrel and neither of them deny it.

There's even a scene on how they ended their lover's quarrel, with Arnice dancing with Lilysse, putting a ring on her finger, then leading her to their bedroom arms linked before the scene skips to them in bed together the next morning.

I didn't miss a thing. I was following this game from the very start and have played it the same week it got released. His commercial non-answer has no impact if you actually played the fucking game. About the kiss, I thought it was pretty romantic. Lilysse was splashed with Blue Blood so she was going to turn into a fiend. However, it wasn't like she drank the Blue Blood or anything. Arnice didn't necessary have to kiss her on the lips to draw the blood out. Anywhere would've probably been fine. The True End is happy, but it is not Lily's max affection ending. Lily has 5 levels of affection. The first three affection tiers are Normal Ending 1, 2, 3. The 4th affection is the True End which expands upon Normal Ending 3 and gives them a happy end. The 5th and highest tier is the Bonus Ending, which is only unlocked after beating the True End. In the Bonus Ending, Arnice becomes the NightLord (Nightmare form and all) and tells Lilysse that she can no longer be hers, even when Lilysse says she wanted to be with her. Arnice then removes all Lilysse's memories of her and they said good bye. A year later, Lilysse ends up at the hotel with no memories. It ends with Simon asking Lily to stay and listen to his tale of two girls he knew (Arnice and Lilysse's story).

Honestly, I'm really bitter with the bonus ending. I saved it for last when getting all the endings, and I was disappointed with how it went. It felt like a step back from the True Ending, since in the True Ending, Lily remembered and reunited with Arnice at the end. My favorite is probably Normal Ending 2, where they basically said they cannot live in a world without one another and decides to just let the world burn.

I really like the concepts in the game.

Arnice, the archtype deviantart OC edgelord character design is just a cute girl in love. She's upfront and blunt, always quick to answer "no" when one of the guys starts bugging her. The Nightlord is just a guy who was relaxing in his realm unbothered by anything until some bitch summoned and killed him, and his only motivation after that was putting her in her place. He's even nice enough to let Arnice take his power to get the job done, since he's just stuck as a cat.

There are some things that still kind of bug me that seem like they were left unanswered, at least I think they were.

It's been several weeks, nice to see this thread is still alive. It's a weird feeling how much the story still moves me even after all this time. I don't think so considering FFXIII is insanely popular where it matters most (Japan) and Lightning consistently tops or at least gets into TOP3 most popular FF characters in Japan everytime they make a poll so it's obviously not an issue of them being inside a forgotten by fans series.

That would be nice and all except the one who birthed the concept for this all male boyband wish fullfilment was Nomura and it was supposed to be his dream game and also not a mainline entry, yet he is no longer working on it because he was so slow with development and eventually they desperately needed a new mainline game so they decided to adopt this and make the best they can with it. Levels are important, they give you new skills to unlock and extra weapon forms. They are mostly gated by story so just level up as much as it lets you.

Quests are pulled from a big list based on how far you are and do repeat indefinitely. If you're not going for completion the only ones that really matter are Blood reward quests.

Anyway, I finally finished the game (almost got the platinum, fuck the 10k kills trophy, I have no idea how much more I'll have to grind for it).
I wasn't expecting much gameplay-wise, but in the end the battle system was pretty good, too bad that the difficulty of 80% of the game was extremely low, during the first hours I was seriously getting sleepy.

As for the main point: yeah, this is definitely a yuri game. Sure, the developers didn't have the guts to make it 200% explicit in order to avoid making the waifu crowd angry, but I'm 100% sure that they intended their relationship to be romantic.
Despite the occasional appearance of the word "friendship", there's so much romantic imagery in the game, far more than in most of jrpgs with het relationship: dancing together, putting a ring on the partner's finger, alway sleeping in the same bed despite living in a big empty luxury hotel, Arnice lusting after Lilytisse's blood, a stargazing date with the "I'll always love you", and in the endings we have the "blood transfer" kiss, the "make me yours", the "my Lilytisse"
And if that's not enough, what is explicitly said to be the saints' flower? The fucking lily, also present in Lilytisse/Ryuritis name in both the japanese and english names.

I agree with this, it feels like they wanted to tell a story about two star crossed lovers, but there are a lot of design decisions that cheapen the experience. I don't know if it was developer preference, or corporate buggery, but the relationship between Arnice and Lilysse is definitely romantic.
