Since the last one turned out so well, how about another fanfic thread.
>>
Last thread: >>1875256
>>
>>1961504
Well, why the hell not.
Could've put the subject in tho.

Since I've recently binged PoI, any good fics that are not Reese/Finch?
>>
>>1961653
That's kind of hard to find anything good. I did find a fic that was ShawxRootxTheMachine though that was interesting.
>>
>>1961653
So, how long until PoI becomes more than a case-of-the-week show? I've watched a few episodes and while it's a decent sorta-cop show, I'd like something more.
>>
>>1961661
First season is almost strictly case/week
Second one starts out case/week, but slowly builds on a major plot involving the machine, Root, the government, and a few other things. By season 3, stand alone episodes were a lot less common, and most of them at the very least indirectly tied back into either the HR plot or the Machine plot. We're in season 4 now, and they more or less dropped the cop-show premise, and turned it into a full sci-fi drama.
>>
>>1961655
How does that even work? Does Root get, like, dirty whispers?
>>1961661
S2, when Root mainly comes into play (she's in 2eps of S1 too), marks the beginning of the main craziness. Then when Shaw shows up they begin eyefucking. Plus there's the hospital lesbians episode. Most of the episodes of S1 are very fast-forward able.
Still, shame it's focused on John and Harold so much, even after we get root/shaw sorta confirmed.
>>
>>1961703
>How does that even work?
It was mostly the machine coming onto Shaw through various means with the occasional Root flirt.
>>
>>1961703
>shame it's focused on John and Harold so much
Yes, what a shame the show focuses on the main characters.
>>
>>1961703
>>1961706
Ah found it if anyone's interested.

Fuck that noise, I'd gladly exchange them for Root and Shaw. Any fics like that?

>>
Any good videogame fics? Too many tv shows here.
>>
>>1962739

Yea, it seems that after Vocaloid faded from these threads, the people who picked it back up are all from /tv/
>>
>>1962739
For mass effect OSABC and that one with Hope and Grace and the clones are pretty good.
>>
>>1962764
OSABC?
>>
>>1962749
Probably a large part of the reason is larger yuri game/anime fandoms have their own threads for the most part, and apparently there's not a lot of 'neutral' fanfic readers around.

Personally I'll basically try anything except TV/movie-fics as long as the fic sounds decent, even if I don't like/know the source. In fact I almost prefer fics from smaller yuri series because I feel like they tend to be less generic. But almost all fic discussion on /u/ seems to be very source-specific, whether taking place in threads for said source or, in this thread, in the form of someone requesting recommendations for a specific show or dumping recommendations for a specific show.
>>
Any smutty age-gap Harry Potter, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Alice in Wonderland?
>>
>>1963959
Some anon in last thread posted a list of Hermione/McGonnagal fics.
>>
>>1963864
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8019901/1/Of-Sheep-and-Battle-Chicken

It's (going to be) a three parter, with part 2 already well under way...
It has ridiculously (amazing) detailed world building fics accompanying the main fics.
>>
Realized that https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5144486/1/Infinity is finished and it's listed on Sugoi Story Anego (is it still being updated?). I was wondering, how /u/ is the story?
>>
>>1966188
I don't think Anego is being updated, how long is it since a new story was added to it now?
>>
>>1966225
The last few times somebody complained about that, the maintainer appeared here briefly to respond. Dunno about the present day, though.
>>
>>1966403
I'm just saying, looking at all the fics that have updated in the past 2 years (meaning like half must be abandoned by now to boot) there are NO fics from 2013 on, and only two are from 2012. While I personally feel there's been a dearth of (non-western) yuri fics the past few years there's certainly been more brought up and posted about than zero.
>>
Help me /u/, my fetish is too specific, and I can't find any material for it.
I'm looking for anything involving an older woman (late 20's to late 30's) Pining for a younger (18-20, we're talking fresh off the bus here) and feeling guilty over it, with the younger girl being the one coming onto the older one.

The closest I've found to a story for this is a small part of a single chapter of some long dead Homestuck fic. I don't even like Homestuck.
>>
>>1950577
Been reading this for a bit and I find I'm surprisingly enjoying it. I've not liked or followed Naruto for around about a decade at this point so the story has no basis for keeping my attention, and there are some niggling issues with the fic itself (Sakura comes off as a bit serious/mature for her age, a few consistently misspelled words that trigger my autism) but I'm strangely charmed, and the plot actually kicking in has made for a fairly fun ride in the last few chapters. Hopefully there's another chapter or two of Saku/Ino nudging by the time I catch up - though I'm not actually sure Ino's shown up more than once in the chapters I've read, hah. The drawbacks of being a procrastinating reader.
>>
>>1962764
Thanks. OSABC is pretty fucking great.
>>
>>1962764
I couldn't find the other fics though.
>>
>>1967006
Post you linked to is dead, any chance you can re-post the link? I've been looking for decent Naruto yuri for a while, that stuff's almost impossible to find.
>>
>>1967034
I couldn't recall the title even though I read it just recently. Apologies.

Did some looking around and it's Gods and Monsters. Be advised, expect a heavy dose of /u/, feels, suffering and mommyissues. And a Kai Leng even worse than the one in the game.

It didn't die at 10 posts.

AO3 makes it possible to download all the chapters of a fanfic all at once, bless. There is a fanfic I like on fanfiction net, it has 63 chapters and I don't feel like going page by page, saving them. Might have to do that if there is no other way tho.

>>
I wish FF's filters weren't so garbage. Checking the pairing box doesn't do anything to filter only for pairings between the characters you're searching for.
>>
>>1967179
thanks.
>>
>>1967180
It had a few hundred posts, all or almost all of which were on topic and with little to no trolling. I'm not saying it was legendary or anything, but its success justified a second one.
>>
>>1967634
There is (or used to be) a user script that would load all chapters of a fanfic.net story into the same page, one after another as you reached the end. So you could hold down the end button on your keyboard to get the whole thing, then copy paste (which needs another userscript because for some reason fanfic.net doesn't let you do that) it into a word document.
>>
>>1967893
>characters: a & b
>pairing: yes
>result: [a, c], [b, d]
So fucking infuriating.
On the other hand you've got AO3:
>check fandom a
>results: fandom a, but also all crossovers with fandoms b, c, d
How hard is it to get this right?!
>>
>>1967964
>AO3
>"Hmm,I want to find something new today. Some cute yuri would be cool
>Filter F/F
>98% western fics
How hard is it to add a tag to restrict search by media (Anime/Manga, Games, TV, etc)?
>>
>>1968047
I don't think you can do that, the only way i know is to restrict yourself to a specific series (like One Piece, for example)

But even them, you still have to deal with shitty 10+ series crossover and fucking Multi-Fics, i specially hate the latter, because you have like:

5 yaoi pairs, 3 het pairs and one yuri

Fucking hate this shit
>>
>>1968073
Yeah, that's what I mean, there's no way to do that. It's really stupid.

That said you can get rid of multi-fics by adding the tags -m/f -m/m to your search I'm pretty sure. No way to prevent crossovers though.
>>
>>1967179
I see it just updated. Most of the recent fics I've found have been ambiguously dead (3 - 6 months since last update) so that's encouraging at least.
>>
>>1967964
I think the worst one I've seen is when you search while filtering out OCs and you end up with a pairing including an OC.
>>
>>1961703
So I got to the episode where Root and Shaw meet for the first time and it involves Root threatening to burn Shaw's face off with an iron and Shaw liking it. I just might have a new OTP.
>>
>>1967179
So I caught up, overall I've enjoyed it a fair bit. I thought the middle part about her trip back from Sand was tedious though. I have a bit of an issue with the Hinata stuff though - frankly I don't necessarily think brutally killing her off fairly quick is unrealistic or anything, but the juxtaposition of not letting the readers spend much time getting invested in their friendship with how hard Sakura takes her disappearance/death feels a bit off, especially given how, other than Kiba, basically no other character in the story seems to give a shit about Hinata either. Even taking into account the only other kid who'd have any real connection to her would be Shino, they seem a bit blasé about it. Not a huge thing though.

For the /u/ stuff I guess I can see some relationship potential in the SakuIno interactions. I can't really see how that relationship could work out logistically though with Sakura's new employment and all, or any other relationships she'd seem interested in for that matter. I'll leave it up to hope I suppose.

You could at least pretend to have something to contribute or need when you bump.

It's not hard.
>>
I'm looking for age-gap stories. I don't care where they're from; as an example Cythina and Dawn like age-gap.
>>
>>1982944
Look for Miranda/Andy (Mirandy) from Devil Wears Prada, Supergirl/Cat (Supercat) from the Supergirl TV show, and Raven/Abby (Doctor Mechanic) from The 100. The last two are pretty active at the moment, especially Supercat, which people have seemed to embrace as the new fun subtext-only ship, while Mirandy had a very active fandom, especially for a movie, for quite a while.

I believe Hermione/Bellatrix from Harry Potter is also a thing, though that obviously also has other dimensions to it from age gap, which something like Seven/Janeway (J7) from Star Trek Voyager does as well.

If you're looking for somewhat younger and VERY young...like Cynthia and Dawn, I'll think on it, I don't really look for that.

Current fanfic atmosphere feels really dry. Too much live action stuff involving average looking actresses
>>
>>1986798
Fanfic thread has been only discussing western series since the Vocaloid stuff dried up, like 18 months ago.

I dunno if that's due to lack of half-decent/noteworthy fics about eastern series, or just nobody finding/posting them though. Used to scour every series even remotely yuri back 3 - 6 years ago, but I just can't be bothered now. The signal/noise ratio got too bad and I'd finished searching through archives of bigger yuri-fandoms.

Not that I know if searching would help - it feels like there hasn't been a yuri series with even a decent writing-base since Madoka or so, so the ol' reliables like Mai Hime, Nanoha, etc are basically died out with nothing to replace them. Sure there have been yuri-related series since, but they all seem to get jack-shit in terms of fics. I guess idol-stuff still gets a fair amount of yuri fics, but I half-heartedly tried looking through some Love Live stuff on ff.net and found preciously little decently written or interesting stuff.

>>

Basically, I've only found two half-interesting fics in these fanfic threads for like half a year, and of them one is pretty ded right now and the yuri never got properly going in what's there, while the other doesn't even have any yuri so far.
>>
>>1986919
Basically same, however Oerlady is the best Terry Pratchett novel since Terry Pratchett died. (And is starting to show some romantic tension.)
>>
>>1986927
I can't spell. Overlady.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8753582/1/Overlady
>>
>>1986919

There needs to be some topic people care and are passionate about, even better if they're actually writing something too. That's how Vocaloid got so much talk.

Not sure whatever peoeple are into now. Maybe we should have a poll.
>>
>>1986919
Overlady did just update, though I'm not sure if ES updated their FF hosting of it yet. It was a Heroic Interlude however, so it didn't focus on the MC and her closet issues, but it did focus on one girl continuing her problems with a cross-dressing fellow girl.
>>
>>1986951
You also gotta factor in how easy it is to get into a certain fandom. While there may be a lot of passion regarding animus/mangas it takes a bit more effort compared to their western counterparts for a new person to get into them to the point where they may want to write a fic.
>>
>>1986963
How are anime and manga more difficult than western stuff to get into, especially for people who come to 4chin
>>
>>1986951
Well, to me I generally enjoy good fics from series/pairings that are neglected/unknown to me as much as ones from series I'm really into. Most popular pairings, whether eastern or western, tend to have lots of uninspired fics that repeat the same character-traits, relationship-dynamics and situations/settings.

Problem is, of course, that finding good fics when you're looking at dozens of them rather than hundreds or thousands is quite tough, doubly so when it's a series someone searching for yuri fiction wouldn't quickly think of.

Any het I should be aware of before I go on a 300k word bender?
>>
>>1987022
There are a couple couples away in the wide, wide world but they aren't really explored and the main character is lesbian as hell. She's just not ready to accept it yet. The whole thing is really well done and entertaining, come for the lesbian evil Overlady, stay for the lesbian, the evil and the Overlady. (Also the lesbian vampire is definitely building up a harem in a corner.)
>>
>>1987022
There's some side plot in the background where the Overlady is trying out a friendship with this guy, unfortunately it starts out with romantic intentions. However, it's more like she's going along with it because that's what's expected but later on she kind of realizes or is beginning to realize that's not really what's happening.
The LI also kinda had a male true love at one point but the guy died.

The other anon was pretty spot on about Louise being pretty deep in the closet though.
>>
>>1987028
She's still attracted to the guy, though they're not really trying too hard for the relationship to actually be romantic, as it's hard to be romantic through two layers of plate armor and zero trust.

What should be noted is, that in the most recent chapter that was still about Louise, she still maintained attraction towards her female LI and felt nothing for the supercharged masculinity of another character's demonic aura whilst recovering from nearly dying.
>>
>>1986951
Vocaloid was great because the barrier of entry was exceedingly low, and there are an incredible amount of things one can do with the characters due to the very nature of Vocaloid. I think that any other series by its very nature of being a series has a much higher barrier of entry than Vocaloid. For Miku/Luka, all you really needed was to listen to a 3 minute-long song called Magnet.

Hell, I'm still into Vocaloid, because Vocaloid means anything. Too bad the writing for it is nonexistent now. Where did Kuugen/Ouef Trick/Fliers/Gray Voice/Genki Collective etc go?
>>
>>1987025
>the main character is lesbian as hell. She's just not ready to accept it yet
>>1987028
>pretty deep in the closet
That's exactly the kind of stories I don't enjoy because they're almost guaranteed to descend into endless misery wank.
>>
>>1987035
The romance is honestly very much a side plot and I'd say that the story overall is for people who want yuri with their humorous fanfiction rather than a yuri romance centered fanfic.

Also current levels of misery and angst are fairly low, but suitable for the setting and circumstances and tie into the general issues of morality that have been floating around the story.
>>
>>1987035
See there's the thing though. It's almost entirely not focused on that. It's more focused on the actual overlord, conquest parts. Besides Louise barely ponders it, though the vampire does a better job of being direct in her desires. Also while the eventual little arc may come where she gets over any adverse feelings it probably wouldn't stretch on to be endless considering it'd most likely would be included with a main arc.

If you want an actual reason to avoid it, then realize that a lot of the humour and stuff that can draw you in, aside from the yuri in the end, comes from knowing the Overlord games and the anime setting.
>>
>>1987035
She's not wallowing in misery, she's a bit embarrassed and surprised by herself and then she goes and Does Acts Of Great Evil that she justifies to herself with a lot of mental acrobatics until she's pretty sure she is in fact still a self-assigned deep cover agent for the forces of good.
>>
>>1987043
Like that one messenger she 'defiled' against said messenger's will.
>>
>>1987013
I don't really know what happened to the yuri fic landscape. Whatever people think of the quality of the pairings, the old fandoms turned out a lot of good stuff. People for the most part don't seem as interested in sitting down and writing those long good fics now. Is it because of anime itself? That the type of person who could actually write and plot well isn't getting into anime? Or yuri anime, anyway? Valkyrie Overdrive? Love Live? Hibike? Fandom is becoming more of a collective effort now, self-feeding in energy and praise. People aren't getting into them enough to plot out long fics and stick with them.

I think live action has stolen away people as well. Why sit there and gaynst about ShizNat or the Sailor Moon pairings when you can get into canon pairings? And then there's also how fandom social media's changed. Instead of forums and Live Journal, there's Tumblr, which really makes for a much shorter attention span, people posting ficlets and going on in tags.
>>
>>1987073
Yeah as an ex-fanfic writer who is mainly into anime none of the recent yuri anime have really appealed to me. Somehow, it feels as though material isn't there and readers have short attention spans. Community has decreased in some ways with the rise of tumblr. Definitely agree with you on that.
>>

>Kuugen/Ouef Trick/Fliers/Gray Voice/Genki Collective

A while back, Kuugen announced she was going to rewrite Hear My Song, then went off to write for other fandoms. She just updated a couple fics in January.

Oeuf Trick, aka Nuclear Eggs, hasn't published anything since early 2015.

Fliers went MIA more than three years ago. I heard a rumor as early as 2014 that she'd given up writing fanfiction.

Gray Voice was working on Prototype (YukarIA sci-fi chapter fic), but no update since October.

Ditto for Genki Collective. She started a negitoro chapter fic last fall, but nothing since October.

So...yeah. Basically zilch.
>>
>>1987278
Seems like all these people stopped around the same time. Did something happen?
>>
>>1987348
Hard to say. I know that Eggs, Fliers, and Gray Voice are/were all college students, and that's about the time a lot of fanfic writers quit. Kuugen and Genki are older I think, so not sure what their deal is. I remember PMing Genki a couple years back and she said work really cuts into her free time to write.

I doubt anything particular happened. As a former regularly updating author, I just find it hard to spend the time on writing these days when I have so many other hobbies and obligations. Fanfic writing is also often a less fulfilling hobby, since generally nobody comments on -- or even acknowledges -- your stories even if there's actually a decent sized readership who enjoy them.

I still have about eight long fics I want to write someday, and one already started I need to finish. Someday!
>>
>>1987374
Yea, it takes a certain mindset to keep updating while receiving minimal feedback. Not everyone sticks to it.

I've also become very reluctant to comment over the years, just feels awkward for some reason.

>>1987073
>>1987083
This as well. Huge fanfic communities have grew around Frozen and RWBY but there hasnt been any anime in the last few years that made any solid foothold for yuri. I've seen some cute Symphogear shorts and Akuma no Riddle had a couple of decent ones too, but nothing really close to the level of older shows or Madoka. Maybe the new Strike Witches season will get some things started, who knows. I guess Attack on Titan had some stories too.

I'd love to go back to Vocaloid tho, if it experiences any kind of resurgence.
>>
>>1987385
The problem with Vocaloid yuri right now is not that people aren't writing the stories, just that the stories mostly suck. Even the decently written ones are the 92847248th variation on "schoolgirl Miku crushes on schoolgirl Luka" or some other school-based plot that's been done to death. I'm so over that. That's why I like what Genki and Gray Voice were trying to do with their most recent stories - whatever one might think of their writing, they were trying to be original at least. Disappointing that they and Kuugen and Eggs dropped off the face of the earth. Still waiting for that Degrees Below Zero update damnit.

As a follow-up to >>1987374, you can see how getting the same level of response to your more innovative take on a story that the typical cookie-cutter school crush fic also gets could be discouraging.

I'm not saying readers are at fault or something for not commenting, just offering my two cents about one part of why it gets harder to find the motivation to write when you already have lots of other things to do.
>>
>>1987392
>>1987389
I dont think setting is the issue here. People expect certain things out of the characters, even if it's Vocaloid.

Maybe some of the "more innovative" stories just put readers out of their comfort zones.

I still remember how fucking stupid that vampire story was, Strange Duet was it? But it had a decent following because it kept that familiar character dynamic.

Also I wonder if authors should just stop trying to push Ia/Yukari so much, dont think they have enough draws as the mains on their own.
>>
>>1987394
I still can't believe that Strange Duet had such a large following even after Nuclear Eggs/Oeuf Trick tore it apart in Short Cuts. First time I've ever seen a fanfic author do that to their own fic.

When the author clearly knows it's shit, the readers should know it's shit too.

Also, I don't think Ia/Yukari is being pushed that much. They only have three stories.
>>
>>1987396
>short cuts

Never read it, what happened?

Strange Duet was pretty funny though. I remember laughing out loud when Luka revealed she was actually some Level 99 Sickedge Vampire Mistress of Crimson Darkness shit.
>>
>>1987400
It's a little long to describe, but here is the link to the chapter with the parody: https://m.fanfiction.net/s/8348860/3/

I think the author's contempt for the story is clear.
>>

>>
>>1987425
Why Anon, it's there whenever Root and Shaw share a scene and try to fuck each other with their eyes. Just enjoy it.
>>
>>1987394
Being strange/bad isn't an extreme of being inventive. It's just being bad.
>>

What is 'the familiar character dynamic'? I believe all of the listed authors 'change up' the character dynamic in their stories. Not sure about Kuugen actually because she only wrote Hear My Song, but the others certainly did.

I still think Oscillation is intriguing. Wish Fliers didn't disappear years ago.
>>
>>1987396
>Also, I don't think Ia/Yukari is being pushed that much. They only have three stories.

This. Seems to me that Maki/Yukari is more of a thing in Japan than YukarIA is, anyway.

I'd like to see more stories of IA without Yukari, as an empowered main character along the lines of her recent IA Project videos. They certainly present a different picture of her than the early songs did. Also, I think IA would do well paired with other characters than Yukari. Maybe even more than one. I'm thinking Divine Diva five-some here.
>>
>>1987558
I'm out of the loop...who's Maki?

I really like YukarIA though, together I think they have a nice space theme going. Too bad they're a dead meme pairing.

>>
>>1987389
Tbh even if they return I doubt it would make a big splash. The Vocaloid community is dead in the water, and I'm speaking as a Vocaloid fan myself. It's simply been too long since any substantial updates.
>>
>>1987609

Then make substantial updates, talk about them, and get people interested again

Not like there are many other non-western choices at the moment
>>
>>1987640
Every time we talk about Vocaloid we urge people to make updates, but they, for most part, don't. Even with Gray Voice's and Genki's recent efforts, they've flown under the radar in regards to both review count and discussion. Personally, I believe the interest is just gone altogether.

The other conclusion we can draw is that their newest stories are simply not engaging people as much, as per >>1987394 's theory that they're 'too innovative' for the average Vocaloid fan. But I don't think there should be anything as 'too innovative', especially considering the interest in Flier's Oscillation, which is quite frankly a bizarre fic that switched tones drastically between chapters 1 and 2. Which is why I think people just aren't interested in Vocaloid anymore.
>>
>>1987654
What was Oscillation again? The village doctor one?

I think that's still within the established "canon" of what people expect out of Vocaloid. Where Luka is the cool protagonist meeting a mysterious and seemingly hapless beauty in Miku. Or am I thinking of the ghost music school story?

Also while review count is obviously the most easily identified sign of interest level, authors themselves can also see traffic data for their stories on FF, so it's harder for us to judge just how much interest is there. Or maybe readers of today just aren't as interested in leaving feedbacks.
>>
>>1987661
Village Doctor one is by Eggs, Oscillation is the story about Luka and Miku chasing books. It started out as a conventional story that ended with a bookish Miku giving Luka a book, but the second chapter took an abrupt turn when the book Miku gave Luka isn't actually the real book, or something like that - basically, it's just bizarre and a complete tone and story shift.

>traffic data
True, but I believe review count is still the best metric for measuring interest because it requires readers to 'give back' and put effort in showing their interest, which to me indicates a higher level of engagement.
>>
>>1987665
I honestly don't remember shit about that story.

Was that the one where Luka was bored at the club or something at the start. Then there was some weird twist in chapter 2 and people thought it was heading into Cellphones territory?
>>
>>1987670
That's the one. I personally think that story was incredibly 'out there' (because of the strange shift in tone, Miku acting almost completely differently from chapter 2 onwards, readers getting a different story than the one Fliers' implicitly promised with the entirety of chapter 1...I'm surprised it was popular) which is why I don't think the recent lack of interest in Gray Voice's and Genki's stories is because they're 'too innovative'.
>>
>>1987680
Oscillation was familiar setting with a weird twist in story progression. It's hard for me to explain too well on a phone, but something about GV and Genki's stories "recently" just don't quite put me in that same Vocaloid mood.

I mean who knows maybe I just wasn't into Vocaloid anymore at time and suddenly getting the urges again.

Also I don't really think Oscillation was really gonna go anywhere meaningful given how abrupt the change was. Cellphones ending also felt kind hamfisted with the divine intervention stuff, and I personally did not feel like the erosion of dimensional boundary that was happening near the final parts of the story was done particularly well. Just didn't quite give me that sense of urgency and fear that Miku should have been experiencing at the time.
>>
>>1987694
Hmm okay, what about it is different? Is it the fantasy/sci-fi aspects? The secret service aspects of Genki's latest? What about it doesn't strike you as 'Vocaloid'? Do you think the characters have strayed too far from 'Vocaloid', or the plots?

On your thoughts on Oscillation and Cellphones, I agree - I doubt Fliers had any sort of plan in mind for Oscillation, and mainly got bored of the simple club setting because reasons. I think she's at her best with contained short stories (Wolf and Falling, Crumbling) where the plot won't get away from her so easily. I think Fliers' main writing flaw is that she's not a good long-term planner, thus the ham-fisted ending of Cellphones and the abruptness of Oscillation. Not to dogpile on her though - I think this is a common fanfiction problem anyways.
>>
>>1987709
I honestly don't even remember what they are. Were they both sci fi?

For me, and I know this will probably sound shallow in some way, is that Im much MUCH more likely to continue a story if something within the first two or three paragraphs gives me that immediate "Yup, that's the Luka (or Miku) I know" reaction. It's after all why I'm reading these stories in the first place.

Alternatively I just wanna see them in roles I'm interested in and obviously this varies greatly from person to person. I remember I wrote some stupid You can call me Luka the Demon Killa scenario in response to someone's suggestion and I was so immensely pleased with it that I almost wrote an actual story about this borderline psycho Luka going around hunting demons and screaming profane one liners like Donte.
>>
>>1987721
Prototype is straight up sci-fi, complete with spaceships and hackers and scanning planets and AI shenanigans. Empire is moreso post-apocalypse, but there's vague future stuff in there.

Gotcha. What kinds of roles are you interested in seeing for them? I think I can see what you mean by 'yup, that's the Miku and Luka I know'. Maybe it's the writing style of Genki and Gray. They do beta-read for each other.
>>
>>1987394
>that familiar character dynamic

I think it's hilarious how all of a sudden we're judging authors by whether or not they conform to some nebulous "canon" or non-existent "prevailing fanon." It wasn't that many years ago that the Vocaloid regulars in this thread were bitching to high heaven about wanting authors to be innovative and not churn out yet another variation on the usual blah-blah.
>>
>>1987654

Among the 94 negitoro fics on fanfiction.net that were published within the past 12 months, Genki's is top 5 in faves and follows, top 10 in reviews. Seems to me she's engaging people just fine. Problem is, there's no one to engage. Overall, however, the numbers are really low across the board.

Didn't bother to do the same for GV, because the reason for his low numbers is obvious. YukarIA never did get any long-term traction other than being the flavor in this particular thread for a while.
>>
>>1987665
> review count is still the best metric

Total review count can be inflated, and often is. Reviews per chapter gives a better feel for engagement - bonus points if they aren't the same people every chapter.

Actually, none of the three metrics is a good measure. Hit rate - number of visitors, especially to later chapters - is the key metric, but only the authors can see those numbers.
>>
How many ficfags do we have who are confirmed /u/sers? Any fandom really, I'm just curious.
>>
>>1987919
Hah I remember this being a point of discussion in previous threads as well. Though I think the general consensus was that we needed balance between innovation and what is recognizable as Vocaloid.

>>1987926
>YukarIA never did get any long-term traction other than being the flavor in this particular thread for a while.
Wish this wasn't the case. I really like the pairing itself. Maybe Degrees Below Zero will update someday, I think other than Prototype it's the only YukarIA fic still running.

>>1987954
I really only know about Vocaloid people, but I think Kuugen is a confirmed /u/ser. Fliers is semi-confirmed too.
>>
I don't know if I'm representative of the average /u/ fanfic reader, but the problem with Vocaloid fics for me is that they just aren't interesting, on any level. There are fandoms like Madoka, Nanoha, Mai Hime, etc. which have interesting plots to work with, or Touhou with its fun setting. Even idol fics at least have a set characterization that's been laid out in the anime or games, with Vocaloid even that isn't a given. I could enjoy the Negitoro dynamic in one fic, but there's no guarantee that any other fic I'll find will have anything remotely similar.

At best I can say that the character designs look visually appealing, but that really isn't enough of a reason for me to read fics about them.
>>
>>1987991
One of the major appeals of Vocaloid is the very fact that there is no established canon or one uniting plot to work with. Stories can be based off individual songs or nothing at all.

So while saying the lack of canon is detriment to one's enjoyment of the stories is understandable, it's also completely missing the point of this particular fandom. It's like complaining that a sandwich isn't soup.
>>
>>1987954
I'm pretty sure /u/ makes up like 75% of Symphogear's AO3 posts (and most of the rest is /m/).

Xesphanite, Astraeon, and weatherflonium definitely are, anyway.
>>
>>1988000
What are some good Symphogear stories? Any long running ones at all?
>>
>>1987954

I wrote Beep and Just Be Friends (the porn one).

We have this conversation every few threads and every time the answers are depressingly similar. I think Symphogear has a slight chance of picking up but everything else is kind of hopeless.

Personally, most of the shows coming out don't interest me enough to write for them. Cross Ange was close (and I wrote a joke oneshot for it) but then that got fucked hard after episode 12.

The things I've been writing in the year and a bit since I last put something out are more Miku/Luka, Nanoha, and Symphogear. I've been jumping around and working on things here and there and maybe one of them will be complete one day. Noting the topics though, you can see that I'm working with the corpses of dead fanbases for the most part. People are moving on and fans like me and you are stuck in the past hoping that what we love will come back.

But hey, maybe tomorrow On & On will update and the Negitoro silver age can begin.
>>
>>1988010
>People are moving on and fans like me and you are stuck in the past hoping that what we love will come back.
Damn...this is too real.

Here's hoping for that negitoro silver age.
>>
>>1988010
There needs to be a story like On&On again that just gets people talking, chapter after chapter or be the Go to story whenever someone asks.

You cant just have an assortment of somewhat interesting stories getting updated here and there. A stallion has to lead the charge so that the rest of the herd may follow.

>>1988012
Look at how much responses came out just by talking about Vocaloid again. Maybe that day isnt too far away.
>>
>>1988016
>There needs to be a story like On&On again
Easier said than done. I think On&on got big because the conditions were right for it. It was the first Miku/Luka story to feature a well written version of the two and had a believable evolution of them becoming a couple. There also wasn't much else in the Vocaloid scene back then. It's a factor of it being in the right time and the right place. Where would that interest come from nowadays? How can fanfic writers possibly duplicate that kind of watershed moment?

Talking about needing a story like On&on is true and all, but I think every Vocaloid fanfic writer has tried to make a story as successful as On&on.
>>
>>1988010
>>1988016
Lol. The Negitoro Silver Age has already passed.

The way I see it, there were two main eras - On&on, and Cellphones. On&on kicked off the fandom and was immensely popular. Its influence on Negitoro cannot be understated. Around this time, there was Hear My Song (which was continued into the Silver Age), Sneering Eyes, and so on. Large, big, long fics with huge interest and huge counts. This was the Golden Age of Vocaloid fanfics.

Then, y8ay8a stopped, and there wasn't that much for a while. What reignited the interest in Vocaloid, especially here? I would point to Cellphones. For a while, it was The Fic that people were talking about, chapter by chapter. More importantly, it also got people writing and talking, and it was also the fic that I believe kicked off all of the writing and world building talk here. It was only after Cellphones that we had Of Common Blood, Postage!, Strange Duet, Tokyo Intermezzo, Degrees Below Zero, and so on. These fics are all quite different from the first-wave ones, with less emphasis on idol plots and 'big and long' stories and more focus on condensing, more focus on 'innovative settings' and putting Vocaloids in a variety of different situations. This was the experimental wave, the Silver Age, and I believe it is over.

Will we have a Bronze Age? I think that we need a 'big fic' for it to happen. But I also don't know if it will, because interest has shrank so much.
>>
>>1988223
>Sneering Eyes

kek
>>
>>1988230
Yeah it sucked but it was also huge. I still remember that random bear attack part.
>>
>>1988016
I disagree, I don't think there has to be one BIG story everyone follows. Whether for the individual fandom or especially for the fanfic thread as a whole.

It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation to say which was at 'fault', but I'd say simply that anons stopped posting about fics they like updating is the biggest reason this thread just fell off. One of the easiest signs (not that I'd want to place the blame on it) is simply sugoi story anego no longer adding more fics - looking at the dates, tons of fics published in 2011, fair number of fics published in 2012...and I can't see any published in 2013, 14 or 15. Taking into account that fics starting in 2012 were still often fresh a while into 2013 and it matches up exactly with when these threads stopped being active, and most of the fandoms died down.

Additionally, while there certainly was a prevalence of fics from larger yuri fandoms on the list, it also had tons of stuff that wasn't. It was a nice way to discover fics you'd never come across otherwise. And while I'd never claim /u/ has great taste, at least there was a LITTLE bit of quality control as well, rather than inevitably checking that fic with 2000 reviews that sounds promising and find 5th-grade writing. Furthermore it was an easy and simple hub to check if something had updated, and when something you hadn't read did update maybe you were tempted to check it out.

Hm. After all these Vocaloid posts I think it's safe to say that Vocaloid is dead. We're all wallowing in our own nostalgia at this point, talking about authors that haven't been active in years. Nothing new, no one stepping up, only a hope for some On&on messiah to come down from nowhere to 'save' the fandom, like that's ever going to happen.

It was a good run, but everything ends eventually.
>>
>>1988311
I dunno, it shows it's still quite popular, just that there's no story that really has mass appeal. But that kind of story could always come along any time.
>>
>>1988311

Eh, I feel like it's the opposite. People are actually talking about it instead of other series that don't even get mentioned.
>>
>>1988223

Yeah, that's a better way to classify it. I wasn't around until 2013 so I missed a lot of those important formative years. Cellphones is still my favourite. Does anyone know if it was based on the /a/ pasta or the other way around?

>>1988311

I don't agree at all. A lot is still being published, even if most of that is shit.

Fast Times at Vokal Llyod High is currently updating and I believe that to be one of the best fics in the fandom. It's the standard high school AU turned on its head. More real and not cute at all. Luka uses Miku as a fuck tool to satisfy her lust and relieve her latent homosexuality. Seems like it's working towards Miku healing her since there are many flashes of true affection but we'll see if it ever actually completes with how slow the updates happen.
>>
>>1988490
No worries about missing the former years. [spoilers]Personally I think the Silver Age kicks the Golden Age's ass.[/spoilers]

Fliers confirmed in the first chapter of Cellphones that she based it off the copypasta. Fast Times sounds interesting...I'll have to give it a read.
>>
>>1988490
>It's the standard high school AU turned on its head.
Hey, the Bronze Age of comic books is when comics started getting darker and more realistic. Maybe it'll be the same for Vocaloid. That'll be a trip.
>>
>>1988515
Sounds like it's time for Bad Ends.

They'll go through all the trials and obstacles, confess their passionate gay love for each other, just to realize at the end that the only way for one of them to live is for the other to sacrifice herself.
>>
>>1988549
Bad Ends? Dream a little bigger, anon! Eggs's early stories were all bad ends after bad ends.

No...what we need for best Bronze Age approximation is darker subject matter. The ugliness of human love and lust. The selfishness of our Voca-pairings uncovered. Surely this daring subject matter, ripe with lemon-scented drama, would be the cocktail that revives Negitoro in all its beauty and ugliness.
>>
>>1988559

Nothing worse than having the victory that you could almost taste completely snatched away from you, by people you can't even blame.
>>
>>1988565
True, but it's still avoiding what most Vocaloid fics haven't touched - the possibility of our main Vocaloids not being so perfect. And I don't mean Vocaloids having flaws like being tsundere or whatever.

Besides, I've had enough of sad end lesbians.

The next wave of Vocaloid fics must be balanced. Gritty yet not grim. Fantastical but grounded.

Lots. The plan is that I have a lot of detail thought up for plotlines involving any given one of those specific pairing links you see there, and I want to throw those all together and have them drive a long story. What if any overarching plot there might be to it, I think I'll figure out once I'm into writing it.

For an example, Remilia/Flandre -- I want to take the typical scary Flandre being the monster locked up in the basement and twist it where Remilia realizes that she's really the dangerous one. "Everyone worried about the monster in the basement, when they should be worried about the monster in the master bedroom."

It's a sorta alt universe prompt that's kinda exploded in popularity. Pretty thoroughly a /d/ thing. Main appeal I find is the whole relationship dynamic of alphas/betas/omegas and knotting.

Also really good if you're the sort of person who gets off to /d/ stuff but comes to /u/ at least in part for the fluff as the universe really supports that sort of thing if you look for what would be a /u/ pairing outside of the fic.

And I'm that sort of person and I fucking love the couple of fics that one of the authors I follow puts out.

I put in on par with all those futa fics in the Mai HiME fandom. It's an easy way to write characters--instead of actual characters, you get caricatures that bear no resemblance to the originals, and all those people who don't understand or can't write lesbians have their straight romance instead.

As thanks for that Elsa/Mulan story from the last thread, here's the yuri stories that I find is interesting, long, rare and original. I often look in the anime and game section.

So here goes:

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8550330/1/Tankards-and-Tempers
Baldur's Gate- be warned there is some of her bisexual references but its mainly yuri for Laska- she the bloody badass. I so love this story

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4111999/1/Life-sucks
Claymore- Mostly yuri apart from a few het but the antics from the once powerful to this is really hilarious, I so love this story

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10692087/1/Dangan-Ronpa-Gender-Bender-Edition
Danganronpa- its interesting the crimes, emotions and the yuri threesome interaction well more two hunting one. Main character may be gender-swapped but there is yuri.
I so love this story

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9254114/1/Child-of-Heaven
Fairy Tail- its slow burn yuri self insert, I know self insert can be bad but this one is quite realistic in line with tone of Fairy Tail plus great yuri interaction between the main characters as it slowly changes from canon.
I so love this story

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11057113/1/The-Shy-Loli-Girl
High School DxD- yuri harem, don't worry the author did quite well in Makoto's interaction with the girls as they come into the picture. Current number of girls: 18 so love this story

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9654458/1/The-Proposal
Hyperdimension Neptunia- I consider this as the best Neptune/Nowa drama and romance nuff said.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3208846/1/Ordinary-Adventures
Kingdom Hearts- I consider this the best Kairi and Yuffie slice of life romance their ups and downs and all the interesting references to various of other kingdom heart characters and their gay antics. I so love this story

I think I did see some fics labeled futa before, but skipped them for obvious reasons.

I just don't see the point of either Luka or Miku having a dong. It's completely unrelated to why I like their fanon personalities and I'm not exactly really into written erotica in general. Sex scenes are probably the least important part of any fics to me. Even for stories I absolutely love, I tend to just skim the sections about fucking.

I think the On&on side story was the only thing that had me reading about it normally

See, this I cannot do. Because the first movie wrapped up the story so perfectly already, I can't bring myself to deviate anything from it. It was just a great movie from start to finish.

It's like trying to write a fanfic about Forrest Gump. Why try to temper with perfection?

Your heroine is defying kingdoms or traveling across the stars for love. It kind feels off about writing about these things you'll never experience, even though this is something almost all writers do.

It starts off after the first game, you can get the basics of wiki or just rely the references which makes it more interesting. The story is base on the Baldur's Gate II so its best not to read that one. You could read on the characters bios but you would get their profile. Do review it!

>>
Anyone have any IA/Yukari recs? I already read Tokyo Internezzo and Degrees Before Zero.
>>
>>1993678
None

They're a weird couple that can't sell a story on their own because their fanon personalities aren't as ingrained in the community as other characters
>>
>>1993739
Ouch. I like their aesthetics together though.
>>
>>1993747
Sure but what are the most popular interpretation of their personalities?

You can probably write Miku as some crazy homeless bum and people will do the mental gymnastics necessary to make the connections back to the Miku they know and love.

Ia/Yukari feels more like a open canvas right now. Which sounds good but you have you got to draw the people in initially? Going by what we've seen of the existing stories, one's reputation as a writer doesn't seem like it's enough by itself. Probably safer to hook the people with a Negitoro story but give plenty of spotlights to Ia and Yukari in it.
>>

Creep- Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Female Protagonist of Souji with Rise later on, its obvious the author takes an detailed approach to world building the story and relationship interaction.

Moment in Time- Sailor Moon
My favourite Sailor Moon story involves
time travelling Rei in the Silver Millennium trying to avert the end along the way falling in love with Princess Serenity. Fascinating character changes and world building. Nicely balance with romance, action and drama.

Will do the rest another time. Do review all of it.

>fanon personalities of Miku and Luka
In my experience there really isn't anything like this but maybe that's because I joined this fandom late and by now it's different than when first Vocaloids released.
Like your idea of the "fanon personality" was probably shaped by music and other videos with Vocaloids when they talked and did stuff + maybe some fanfics and almost no one does the former anymore. Today's music videos star mostly OCs and the fanmade stories about Vocaloids while exist in Japan don't really get uploaded to YT and if they do they never get translated.
That said, I don't necessarily believe you need a fanon personality to make the story work, but unfortunately Vocaloid in general isn't that popular anymore. The fanbase got really fragmented with the 60+ characters it has now (I'm not even sure if that's a hyperbole or not at this point).
>>
>>1994253
>maybe that's because I joined this fandom late

Yes
>>
>>1994295
>maybe that's because I joined this fandom late

Nope. It's not a recent development. People have been pushing their own agendas in the Vocaloid fandom ever since Miku made the software popular back in 2007--2008.

I've been lurking this thread and its predecessors since 2012. Every time the idea of an "accepted" personality for a particular Vocaloid comes up, it does so in the context of some threadfag trashing a particular fanfic/author because some character "doesn't act the way they should." In a fandom like Vocaloid, it's not a legitimate criticism, because there's no official way any of the characters "should" act. It's simply a case of one individual trying to disguise their personal biases by appealing to some non-existent standard.
>>
>>1994407

You're overreacting.
>>
>>1994407
I agree with you. Miku herself already acts completely different in myriad Vocaloid songs. There is no 'standard Miku persona', otherwise, how can songs like Boss Death and World is Mine co-exist?

Sup, Kuugen here

To explain what happened with HMS.
Basically, one of my twitter followers really liked the story and that lead me down the path of wanting to make her happy so I included her favorite vocaloids into the story and tried to give them ample screentime.
That wasn't really what I wanted to do with the story which lead to me writing myself into a corner and once I took a closer look around, I just didn't like the story anymore, at all, to the point where I went to /u/ and asked if I should shelf the story forever or just do a massive hack of a writer reset to get back to a point of where I could write a story I like.

I fully intended to actually rewrite the story and have some characters be different but once I sat down, thought about it and tried to write it, all I could think about was HMS and how it blew up in my face and that just kept dangling over me until I could no longer stomach any Vocaloid writing.

So I kinda apologize to the people that liked the story, I fucked that up.
>>
>>1998851
The chances of me writing a vocaloid story again are extremely slim. I have no connection to the fandom anymore and without that, I get no impulse input to work for the fandom either. Even if I did, it would probably be very different from the HMS you know.

The first idea that came to mind was a fantasy setting where Miku is a magic songstress that is responsible for sealing up an alleged ancient evil that nobody even remembers anymore, so one day she plays hooky instead of doing the ritual song and the evil is released and ta-da, it would be Luka. So, it doesn't really have anything to do with the modern day normal-people setting that HMS was.

I also have fucking awful impulse control, so if I get into a game for example, I really get into it and just can't find any motivation to update at all.

I have a precure story I should be updating but it's really hard to find motivation for that too, because I just stopped liking that fandom the same way I stopped liking vocaloid.

None of the above is helped by me trying to start a living as a light novel author. I have an artist with whom I am working and that too eats up a lot of my time but that belongs over in the LN thread, I suppose. Or the original fiction thread.

No

Anime's mostly filled with yaoi, not yuri. Point and case: There are 3533 M/M fics for Bleach on AO3, and 282 F/F fics (only 150 of which aren't also F/M or M/M), dispite there being 1 yuri relationship in the manga and no yaoi relationships.

Pokemon yuri is a small, shallow pool.

There's a decent amount of Elsa/Skyla and Cynthia/Dawn fics, but I can't say I've found any of them particularly memorable.

There's a few Sabrina/Erika one's I've liked.

There's a really long Sabina/Roxie fic, and a long Sabrina/Hunter J fic, but I haven't really liked what I've read of either. Easy to find on ao3 if you're interested.

There's a couple Roxia/Rosa fics that I feel are good enough to re-read every now and then.

I used to diss On&on because I didn't think the writing was very good, but I'm revisiting it now and all of a sudden my opinion changed. Writing's not the best, but I like the base story. Wonder what changed.
>>
>>2002818
I don't know what kind of drug you do, but On&On has always been one of the best fanfics out there. Excellent writing, pacing and plot. Too bad that it's never finished.
>>
>>2002833
I disagree with you on writing but agree on pacing and plot. I think my priorities changed when weighing the three criteria.
>>
>>2002833

On&on has some very noticeable problems with its writing during its early chapters, mostly very basic errors that should have been easy to correct.

I think she got a beta later and smoothed out most of them.
>>
>>2002862
Why don't people call people who edit their work editors?
>>
>>2002973

>>
>>2002833

I might be remembering it wrong, but at least it stopped at a decent place. I think the only direction it could go from there would be a public reveal or something. Miku and Luka were in a very happy relationship and everything was daijoubu
>>
>>2003317
I purposely "left" one chapter of On&On unread, so that one day when the queen returns, I can finish it properly.

But it's been so long now. I think last I read, they were talking about going to a cabin trip or something?
>>
>>2002862
The quality of On&On writing (namely proses, vocabulary, comparison, humour, description, narration, dialogue, plot details, tension, pacing) is at such a level that you can tell the errors were simply typos and a couple of careless grammars, not a result of a subpar writer. As in, there were nothing that a simple read through couldn't fix.

I can understand somebody not liking a certain piece of work due to uninterest in the franchise/pairing/subject matter, but I can't understand how anyone could deny On&On is objectively good from a pure creative writing angle.
>>
>>2003456
Sorry, I disagree. IMO many other Vocaloid writers are better from a 'pure' writing perspective. For example, Genki and Gray Voice both have better sentence construction and vocabulary. Dialogue wise On&on is far from natural. Description wise it tells rather than shows, and I can't remember any descriptions of settings, and characters are all described in a cliche manner.

Pure writing skill-wise it is clear that On&on is mediocre. Where it excels is plot, but that is in spite of the writing.
>>
>>2003602
>Where it excels is plot, but that is in spite of the writing.

It excels in stretches, but taken as a whole - all 17 chapters - it's hardly perfection. Through the first 10 chapters or so, the plot is compelling and - at least for me - more than makes up for the shortcomings of the writing. But after that, the story line starts wandering. By Ch 17, it isn't even about Miku and Luka anymore, and desu, I was starting to lose interest because of that. The author should have quit while she was ahead, and maybe spun off Lily's harem-building adventures into a second fic.

To give credit where it's due, the author's side story about Miku, Luka, and the strap-on was an excellent take on the dynamics of a lesbian relationship.
>>
>>2003622

>>
>>2003622
Ah right, I remember losing interest in On&on past a certain point. The first few chapters were quite good plot-wise, but then it got too much into Lily and her sleeping with everyone as I recall. I'm only on chapter 7 in my re-read though.

And once the plot's gone, the writing sure as hell wasn't enough to keep me there.
