Tenzin does grow quite a lot throughout the series actually. He's very different in Book 4 than in Book 1. He quite visibly stopped trying (and failing) to pretend to be some weird idealized version of Aang that never existed and became his own man. A man that, incidentally, is quite a bit more like Korra than his father, in terms of temperament.

It's a mix. Some will say everything after the animated series of AtLA is shit. And others will say that they at least prefer the AtLA comics to anything LoK. At the very least everyone agrees that HIBY is atrocious, except for that work's creator.

It's odd that out of all the cast, Bryke's attempt to give Korra a good old dose of parental issues fell flatter than Anne Heche's delivery. Anne Heche is great as Su. But some of her line readings really could have benefited from another take. "Can't you see she's brainwashed you?"

We settled on a cast, some of us decided on the good ending (Korra and Ikki returns to RC and the real Asami), some the In Water ending (yikes). So there wasn't a whole lot left to discuss.

I did enjoy the Silent Hill 3 story where Kuvira has Bataar Sr. murdered and Opal has to travel to Silent Hill for revenge.

Notes from Book 3 show that despite being a background character, Bryke made very clear that Kuvira had to look consistent because she was going to be a playing a much bigger role in the finale season.

It would have also shown that Kuvira was the type of person who would take things into her own hands. Aiwei was Su's most trusted advisor ("He was like family!" kek). Su wouldn't have entertained any suspicion against him, even from Lin or Korra. So we could see Kuvira taking initiative, going above Su's head, but also being one of the most heroic fighters against the Red Lotus, despite being outclassed. (The only reason Kuvira could have been on the far side of the mountain to rescue Tonraq is if she had decided herself to go help Korra.)

I think it wouldn't especially improve season three, but would have been very good for season four, so I can't be sure which of those seasons it counts against.

Maybe Bryke wanted Kuvira to come completely out of left field? Someone not even on the radar three years earlier "replaces" Korra as the EK's saviour. Remember that to Bryke, how important characters with the exception of co-protagonist Bolin relate to Korra is more significant than how they relate to anyone else. Even if her backstory with Su was rushed, what was important was that we got enough for Korra herself to eventually come to understand Kuvira's motivations.

This. Though it really didn't fit his streetsmart "play by my own rules" character to become a cop. Him being a cop, just like him being a a bodyguard, were excuses to give him screentime. I remember being giddy with excitement early in Book Three when it looked like he wasn't coming with the gang.

Book One Mako was Bryke airlifting in Ember Island Players Zuko (without the story), and expected us to take him seriously. I'm still shocked at that decision. Bryke had savagely mocked that type of character, and then made one without irony and shoved him down the audience's throats. It took the entire series run to justify his existence, and as much as I'm okay with Book Four Mako, it was not worth it.

Izumi killed her older brother in an Agni Kai just like her mother once tried to do. Her reasoning was different though. Nick never really knew what to do with the show merchandise-wise and for whatever reason lost interest in even airing it. Even if LoK did get a huge influx of fans, they didn't have shit to buy. Now they're doing the statues, but it's way too late and the hype has gone. If Bryke were planning on selling out, Nick certainly didn't get the memo.

Nickolodeon ordered two full seasons (two twenty-four episode seasons) after the success of Book One on TV. But no sooner was the ink dry on the contract that whoever found themselves in charge of the show completely lost interest in it. Advertising for the show was lacking. Coupled with Book Two's long wait period/rescheduling/lack of quality, many of the viewers drawn in by the first season dropped it. After that, the advertising was abysmal. The numbers fell significantly, and so obviously did the retail sales.

Nick had huge faith in LoK until they didn't. We still don't know what caused the extreme attitude change in between seasons.

While there was huge buzz around the finale, you have to remember that most of this was from existing fans and professional reviewers on specialist nerd sites or the nerd section of more mainstream sites.

Some lapsed viewers may have got back into the show, and non-fans may have watched the finale to see what the story was, but it never felt like it was something that was going to make legions of non-fans pick up the DVDs. Even if they did, the first two seasons are very hard to get through.

Back to the point, I've watched LoK as it aired since Book Two, and I've never seen an ad or piece of marketing material that I didn't seek out myself.
