No Gelphie thread? That's rare.
Technically this is an Oz-Wicked gen but it's certainly gonna be mostly Gelphie.

I tried but realized I didn't really give a damn about Elphaba's son.
>>1487729
Liir's reason for existing is to get raped by a quadling so their daughter could exist. That's it. He tries to be important in his book, then at the end realizes this is it, his baby batter was all that was ever needed, once his baby's guaranteed to survive he could fuck off and die and it wouldn't matter much.
His book really is just the setup for the last two, which are considerably more interesting.

Out of Oz
I started reading Son of a Witch because of this thread. I feel vaguely bad for being this glad about Glinda's inability move on from her old university crush.
>>1512773
Know that feeling. It sucks for her, but her completely losing it when she saw Liir's/Elphaba's broom was pretty satisfying to me. I'm thinking of rereading Out of Oz.
>>1512773
Of course Glinda wouldn't move on, even if Elphaba HADN'T just abandoned her to deal with Morrible's bullshit all alone, their last conversation was an argument over some stupid little thing Glinda did that ultimately led to Elphaba's death. Elphaba was the only thing that ever really happened in her entire life, and even in death, Elphaba had a huge influence on her future.
Just wait until Out of Oz, though. It might make you feel a little better about things, or it'll just make you feel like shit. It's hard to tell, everyone seems to have a different reaction.

Dorothy and Ozma is my OTP... but Ozma and Rain in the wicked years is pretty good too.Just be aware when Rain and Ozma sleep together she's still in her Tip/"Boy" form. Though Rain said she kinda always knew Ozma was a girl, she has a hard time figuring out where things go and the end is of course, ambiguous. Doesn't bother me cause I'm trans myself... but it might disapoint some. There is more on the Glinda/Elphaba angle in the last book too. I don't like Lion Among Men, but I did like Out of Oz.

Just saw the musical for the first time. Haven't read any of the books yet.
I'm told the ending of Out of Oz might make it worth it?
>>1627907
Not if you're going it for pure lesbian content. Gelphie is in the books but it's always subtextual. The ending confirms Elphie's significance to Glinda, but anything beyond that is Word of God from a couple interviews with Maguire. If you like the first book in the series, Out of Oz is definitely worth it for the tie ins with the original. You just have to stomach Liir in the meantime to get there.
I'd definitely recommend at least trying the first book, though. It's good on its own merits.

I was not disappointed. I also like that she included the speaking bits. I think they add a lot to it.
I'm gonna start rereading the series book 1 to book 4. I have never actually read my copy of the second book but I heard it has a Gelphie implied moment in it. I know Glinda appears for like 1 page all depressed and older.
I hate the idea of a live action movie but I just want it already. Gimme my Gelphie on the big screen.
Wicked has ruined me because I ship Wicked Witch x Glinda in the MGM film now. Glinda hating the Witch and snding a little girl to kill her for her, but them having an interesting relationship in the past
>>1487666
I don't remember if Glinda has a canon eye color in Wicked but I wish they were brown
>>1790041
She appears at least twice, actually. The second book isn't bad at all. Liir is admittedly boring, but everything around him is interesting so it doesn't matter much.
Are these two canon? I've always ~known~ about Wicked but never checked it out for myself. If it's not queer baited I may read the book.
>>1866056
Book: They kiss, are important to each other for the entirety of both their lives, but formal relationship never confirmed and no sex on the page. The author's said that they were "in love" in an interview, but didn't say anything past that.
Musical: Not canon at all, though the woman writing the script pushed for it. The head honcho wanted to market the play to teenage girls and their soccer moms but the idea of lesbianism was too risque at the time. There's a queer bait song that's pretty good.
>>1874684
>queerbait song
Are we talking about 'What Is This Feeling?' or 'Popular'?
>>1874769
"What is this Feeling"
>>1874769
>>1875063
I meant "What is This Feeling," but I could see "Popular" being played really gay too. You could easily have Elphaba run out at the last second because Glinda got too close and a little turned on by how she looked and it gave Elphaba ~feelings~.
It's also worth noting that in the musical, Glinda and Elphaba have a sort of typical romantic couple arc—they hate each other, get to know each other, care about each other deeply, sing a song at the very end of the play affirming the depth of their feelings. The actress who played Glinda has gone as far as to call they play "a love story between two women." The writers of the play go out of their way to go nO hOMo though with the addition of a hetero love triangle and a rich prettyboy character for both of them to lust over. (Fucking Fiyero. I'm still pissed about that, his character arc makes no sense and it makes even less sense for Elphaba to like him.)
There's been a few productions where they kiss during their last duet together but I'm under the impression that that's always something the actresses sort of sneak in when the mods are sleeping rather than something intended in the typical production.
>>1798931
Besides his daughter is the person that sleeps with Ozma (well abeit Ozma being male during that time but it doesn't change their feelings after she becomes a girl again)
>>1610490
>Dorothy and Ozma
Was tah tstuff in the book, or was it because of the old Oz anime?
>>1875402
Ozma laughed at the wistful expression in the girl's eyes, and then she drew Dorothy to her and kissed her.
"Am I not your friend and playmate?" she asked.
Dorothy flushed.
"You know how dearly I love you, Ozma!" she cried. "But you're so busy ruling all this Land of Oz that we can't always be together."
>>1875415
Man, children's books were way better back in the day!
>>1875174
Agreed. It seems like something the actresses would do if they are up for it, rather then have the writers actually intend a lesbian relationship between the two.
If you pay attention to a lot of their duets, there's a lot of queer bait. It seems like the source material was obviously paring the two up, but then the musical writers threw in Fiyero just to say "Gay girls? Nah man. No homo."
Also, I'm thinking of picking up the books. What am I in for?
>>1876914
>It seems like the source material was obviously paring the two up, but then the musical writers threw in Fiyero just to say "Gay girls? Nah man. No homo."
Well, not really. In the novel Glinda and Elphaba are friends with sexual tension for a while, but the one Elphaba actually has a life-altering romance with is Fiyero. You could easily make the argument that Elphaba/Glinda is stronger in the musical.
>What am I in for?
Candy-colored grimdark and everyone being gay. They're good, though.
>>1876914
Lesbian content in the first book is limited to what >>1874684 said. Typical subtext. The book itself is telling the story of the ostracized, misunderstood Witch so it hits a lot of typical queer notes despite the character not actually being strictly gay. There are gay background characters, the author is gay, everyone is at least bisexual in general.
The writing style is very descriptive, meandering plots, obtuse symbolism. Character emotions are rarely described directly and instead implied through their dialogue and actions. I'm rereading it now. Grimdark and edgy content, lots of sex. I love it, one of my favorite novels, but it's not for everyone.

Here are my favorites. I've been slowly collecting them since 2010. All bookverse, weirdly.someone save me from this hell
Fluff:
"A Night's Entertainment" by The Noble Arduenna. This author is legendary, all her stuff is great. This is a meta commentary on the musical vs the novel.

"The Thrill, Basis Determined" by RidiculousMavis. The fluffy college adventures we wanted. AU where there is no Emerald City trip. It is the. Best. Fluff.

cont.
Adventure/Plot driven/Other (tends to neither be fluff or angst):
"The Variables in Our Equation" by Ridiculous Mavis. This is probably my favorite Wicked fic, period. Glinda uses the help of Mother Yackle to try and change the past and save her and Elphie's future.
"The Narrative Strain" by The Noble Arduenna. Plot defies description, check it.
"The Brave and the Vulnerable" by Ridiculous Mavis. There are a lot of "Road to the Emerald City" fics and this is the best one imo. Bookverse.
"Not Completely, All Together Here" by Good Afternoon. Very long, slow burn.
"The Love Club" by IntergalacticKoala. Modern AU done right. Great look at how Oz would have progressed through the Industrial revolution to today. No real plot, but it's done well.
Angst:
"Abandoned" by Ridiculous Mavis. Examines Nessa's codependent relationship with Elphie in a roundabout way. Bookverse.
"If You Should See Her" by Ridiculous Mavis. Glinda and Elphaba run into each other after Glinda's last talk with Fiyero. Bookverse.
"Youth" by Navona, a good angsty road-to-ec fic.
>https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5126547/1/YouthI also have written some. I think they're good so I am linking them with this disclaimer. All bookverse still.
"Blended", another road-to-ec fic.
"Laudes", a tour through the Witch's fractured mental state.
"Recessional", an angsty might-have-been.

According to http://moviepilot.com/posts/3620369, "the musical itself is already a tame adaptation of the original book, which featured a fair bit of R rated content, as well as some distinctly non-platonic moments between Elphaba and Galinda."
What moments?
>>1985778
Elphaba kisses Glinda during the scene that corresponds to Defying Gravity.
>>1985778
>>1985852
These are pretty much the biggest instances of it in the original novel. It's very much subtextual, though it's more obvious in the last book in the series and confirmed by Maguire.
>Glinda swooned at the same moment. Elphaba thrust out strong arms and scooped Glinda in mid-collapse. Glinda didn't really lose consciousness, but the uncomfortable nearness of the hawk-faced Elphaba after that undesired act of desire made her want to shiver and revulsion and to purr at the same time.
>In a single lumpy bed, they huddled together for warmth and encouragement and, Glinda told herself, protection . . . Glinda would start as if from a frightful dream, and nestle in nearer to Elphaba, who seemed at night never to sleep.
>[Elphaba] put her face against Glinda’s and kissed her. “Hold out, if you can,” she murmured, and kissed her again. “Hold out my sweet.” … Glinda craned her head to see Elphaba drift back into the crowds … Elphaba hadn’t cried. Her head had turned away quickly, not to hide her tears but to soften the fact of their absence. But the sting, to Glinda, was real.
>The Witch alarmed [Glinda]. It was not just the novelty of seeing her again, but the strange charisma Elphaba possessed, which had always put Glinda in the shade. Also there was the thrill, basis indeterminable, which made Glinda shy and caused her to rush her words, and to speak in a false high voice like an adolescent...For when she chose to remember her youth at all, she could scarcely dredge up an ounce of recollection of that daring meeting with the Wizard. She could recall far more clearly how she and Elphie had shared a bed on the road to the Emerald City. How brave that had made her feel, and how vulnerable too.
>>1987373
>though it's more obvious in the last book
So, what exactly happens in the scene where Glinda and Elphaba are maybe reunited? Did Glinda die or did Elphie come back?
>>2002023
A long time ago I was talking with an anon who suggested that it was both--Elphaba's soul, existent after all, coming back to usher Glinda into some happy afterlife. It's a bit too feel good of a wrap for it to be something that Maguire honestly intended, but I've decided to beleive it anyway.
