First half is suspenseful cat and mouse, like chess, second half is basically seven card stud (for the uninitiated, it's poker but most of your cards are face up) which only aims to build up to the final confrontation
It was obvious the authors were just trying to milk some extra copies off it. Otherwise they could have presented Mello as the only successor (with his current appearance and mannerisms), present him way earlier in the manga instead of only after L's death, have either of them die around the 50 chapter mark, maybe Soichiro too, and the second one solves it with the help of the sacrifice a few chapters later.

It does involve vampires, but doesn't focus on them. The Monogatari series is about the main character, a half-vampire half-human hybrid, helping various other characters with the "oddities" (monsters, ghosts, gods, stuff like that) which cause problems in those characters' lives, somewhat like an exorcist. It's pretty much a supernatural drama with a lot of focus on the characters.
I should warn you though: a lot of the series also shows casual interactions between the characters and, by extension, a LOT of dialogue. Those discussions, in my opinion, aren't really boring and are quite enjoyable and fun to watch as well as developing character's personalities/making them likable, but some people hate the Monogatari series because of that dialogue since it has little to no bearing on the plot.
Also, there are some on-screen flashes of text used in a stylistic manner, mostly in the first entry, Bake, but you don't necessarily need to pause and read them. They're usually just passages from the novels the Monogatari series is based on and exist solely for the contribution it makes to the "aesthetic," I guess, of the series.
