The Conversation
Nocturnal Animals

Not gonna provide links because everyone should have seen these two by now
>>
Well I cN't really think of any specific examples but BOO WOOO OOGA BOOGA
Was that a good jump scare?
>>
I thought this was neat when I first saw it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnrT_zyumAM
Not that great of a movie but it did some things pretty well
>>
why is this creepy instead of goofy, even without context? If the same effect was done to someone else it'd probably just look silly
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNUfmV-ExTQ
>>
>>87735123
that's some trippy shit
>>
I thought the scene after that initial jump scare in Inland Empire was way scarier, where the bullet hit the phantom and it shows that same face but with no eyes and the mouth is bleeding and there is that strange flashlight effect on it
>>
>>87734835
The best jump scare ever is in Mulholland Drive. It's the absolute best one ever so far in human history. I'm not fucking around with you.
>>
Bilbo scene in Rivendell from Fellowship of the Ring.
>>
Birthday party in signs
>>
>>87735230
The one from OP's image isn't that scary, a similar one that happens after that scene with a Pole throwing a cup was scarier.
>>
>>87734835
when her eyes are black, and the mouth starts bleeding hnggggfff so sex
>>
When pic related pops out of nowhere as Sally is wheeling Franklin through the woods and he says he hears something. I don't think I've ever seen someone mention it here but it gets me every time.
>>
>>87735123
That's the opposite of a jump scare though
>>
>>87735728
I actually the superior jumpscare was when that guy walks into the house up to the entrance to Leatherface's workshop and he just steps out in front of him with the hammer
>>
>>87735742
Not really
>>
>>87735881
>tense music as the figure slowly walks into the room
Is not a jump scare. Jumpscare would be if it just suddenly popped into view with a loud noise or something.

Good stuff. Better than the 1st imo.

This one got me pretty good, I think because you're expecting something ti jump into frame but the frame itself is what moves

>all jump scares are bad
That's never been the argument. The problem is when ALL you have are jump scares instead of atmosphere and building tension it's just the worst.

There's nothing scary about mowing the lawn.
>>
>>87736343
That's actually an interesting technique. Are there other films that move the frame unexpectedly like that? Not just in horror but other genres too.
>>

Great build up

Which scene exactly?

The movie wasn't scary for me at all or disturbing because i know that she is reading a book and therefore not real

pleb
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAunmJFl9lw

This is the greatest jump scare in movie history. Period.

What makes it the best is because it wasn't a horror and you simply not in your wildest dreams are expecting something like that.
>>
>>87736850
I think he means the phone video jumpscare. I found it extremely cheesy and laughable.
>>
>>87737017

writer already confirmed that wasn't the witch

but even if it was, which it isn't, my theory was she was that scared that she probably just wanted it to be either her friend that she heard or instant death. She was pretty messed up and if you've seen the movie where she's seen the sun not come up for two days and all the sewer crawling and shit if it was me i'd just wanna be done.

>>Inland Empire run to an extreme close-up scene
Agreed
>>
>>87736376
That argument has been the faux-patrician point for years. Only now are more people starting to understand that "atmosphere" is hardly enough for genuine horror.
>>
>>87736906
>jump scares can't be done right, it's always cheap
Pleb spotted
You're in a thread that proves you 100% wrong
>>
>>87736906
I never actually saw this film. Did it really have those cuts to other cameras? Doesn't that kind of kill the intended effect? Or were these additional shots released in like a special edition?
>>
I really want to watch Mullholland Drive and Inland Empire for the atmostphere that people say they have but i cannot fucking stand jumpscares at all.
Will i die of a literal heart attack if i watch them?

Oshit is that bae Narcissa?
>>
>>87737049
This wasn't scary but made me want to cry...
>>
>>87737563
Well the atmosphere in general is very nightmare-ish in both films and the jump scares aren't really out of nowhere scenes, there is a lot of build-up before the scenes. Watch them and Lost Highway too. Actually, I'd argue that out of all Lynch's films Lost Highway is the creepiest thanks to Robert Blake.
>>
>>87735023
What was a jumpscare in The Conversation? I saw it like seven months ago and I could use a refresher.
>>
>>87734969

this made me laugh my ass off
>>
>>87737680
I think he means the murder scene in the hotel? Or maybe the toilet scene after that.
>>
>>87737521
the way they made it work was everyone had usb ear piece things had had cameras in them

as for it switching back and forth, i dunno. Because movie. You could argue it being toggled by volume of the voice as in when she whispers it goes to the digital camera and when she stops it goes back for first person. I haven't watched the whole movie though and doubt they could have kept up with that.
>>
>>87734969
this one creeps me out, i feel like i've had a similar nightmare one time but just cant remember it.

Like, i've got my friend with me, he won't have the balls to pop o- OH SHIT
>>
>>87737563
Both of then have a single actual jumpscare, but they will be the jumpscares you remember forever.
Otherwise they are pretty jumpscare free films.
>>
>>87737680
>>87737863
Murder scene in the hotel on the balcony. Women comes out all bloody and screaming across the glass of the neighbour room.
It's pretty effective because of the almost completely silent 15 minutes before it.
>>
It's upsetting that no one has posted this yet
https://youtu.be/8VP5jEAP3K4
>>
>>87738225
That's not too bad then. I assume the one's you're on about are the one in OP and the diner scene (i haven't watched either on youtube or anything yet though)
>>
I can't find a good clip of it but in Spiderman 1 when Norman Osborne wakes up after getting goblin-gassed and he goes "Last night? Last night I was-" and then it cuts to him convulsing and screaming
>>
>>87736396
You're not perfect is honestly the most haunting scene ever.
>>
>>87735023
>>87738295
That scene knocked me sick the first time I saw it. Didn't expect it at all, the acting from Hackman also elevates the moments directly following it, because he reacts similar to how I imagine I would
>>
>>87737049
Can't get enough of this movie. One of the best of the decade.
>>
>>87736396
>The ending of Enemy
Damn that was a good movie. Are they doing a follow-up anytime soon? I'd like them to explore the world post-spider takeover and get a peek inside their cloning facility
>>
>>87738480

(you)ing to agree. It's more than just a stupid jump scare because contextually it's a scary thought that Norman is having. It's presented as a jump scare to affect us as the viewer similarly to how Norman is shaken by it.

Raimi is campy but he knows his shit.
>>
>>87735344
I find it hard to argue against it.
>>
>>87739900
I don't recall.

Fucking cuck, jump scarss are lame no matter how well theyre done, its a lazy jew tactic used only by lazy jew directors. if you you want true, creeping horror look a t some of the absolute classics. Saw, texas cs,all the kubrik flicks, great examples of directors who knew what was up.

Saw has jump scares, although Saw is a shitty movie and a weird example for you to choose. TCM has jump scares. The Shining has several jump scares. 2001 might even have one or two.
>>
>>87735344
Inland Empires jump scare got me more
>>
>>87734969
i think this is the best jumpscare of all time, he says exactly what is gonna happen and it still caughts you off guard, Lynch is a genius
>>
>>87737049
in a sense it kind of is, just because there was literally zero reason to expect a jump scare at all
