I don't mean in the sense "the jokes aren't funny," I mean they're mostly nonexistent. I'm astonished at how straight the pilot played to TNG.

Most of the characters are a little sarcastic but the whole "murderous aliens want to steal potentially deadly invention" plot was played 100% straight, I was surprised

It was decent. It needs a lot of work, but there's potential. It took TNG, DS9 and ENT until their 3rd season to get good (and VOY was never good).
