>Original It is a flick that abuses jumpscares and doesn't try to be a great movie. It's just Anabelle with a Clown instead of a demon

>Original Pennywise felt like a threatening cosmic horror with unfathomable power

How the fuck did this happen?
Why can't classics just be left alone?

The new movie is better, but goddamn I hope the second one does the bit the book had showing just how retarded It actually is. I grew up watching the original It. Scared me as a kid. I have read the book and rewatched the original and realized how much was left out (for obvious reasons; too lewd and too much detail) but still the mini series was enjoyable for me. I like the story so both films were good in my opinion. I went in with low expectations (as I do with all movies really) and I was entertained. The new movie was worth the $10 my wife and I spent to see it.

I did have a few things in mind to see in the new movie that weren't there but I still liked it.
>>
>>87608573
The TV mini series is not a classic. Tim Curry is an amazing Pennywise, but each part is hot shit minus several well executes scenes in the child segment.

>>
>>87608573
Honestly, as cliché as this answer is, both actors did a very good job. Curry as more of a regular psycho clown and Skarsgard as kind of a supernatural force trying to mimic human behaviour.

Overall I liked the new IT much better, both as an adaptation and as its own movie.
>>
>>87608573
>It's just Anabelle with a Clown instead of a demon

If you need RLM to form your opinion, you should not talk about classics.

That said, I'm not gonna see the new IT and I don't know why anyone would.
>>
it being a cheap piece of shit is what made it great.
>>
>>87614337
well if i recall correctly in the book Penny starts directly talking to them pretty much when they're adults

Lol I know /tv/ desperately wants to shit on the new movie but "subtle" definitely isn't the word to describe Tim Curry's version of the role. Actually, it isn't suitable for any Curry role ever
>>
>>87615672
Its also a part of the book that if It didnt have such an xbox hueg ego he would have just reached up through the toilet and killed any of them. Thats not even a plothole from some smart ass kid, It literally does that in the book to someone and later actively decides not to do it to the Losers. I hope we get more dialogue out of the clown because It is a fascinating creature, but neither movie really captures what a tool this thing is when you take away the outer layers of OOGA BOOGA *BOOOOOOOM*

People will treat anything as sacrosanct as soon as you remake it, no matter what it is. I really hate to use the term "nostalgia glasses" but only people blinded by nostalgia could seriously think the miniseries is a masterpiece that stands head and shoulders above the film

The originals only redeeming feature was Tim Curry. The kid actors were shit. The adult actors were shit. The sets were shit.

I'm gonna see the new one this week, I hope it's better.

I had a dream that I went to see IT and Cary Fukunaga was there, but when I asked him a question he pretended he could only speak Japanese. Then his assistant asked me to direct the next season of True Detective. Then Pennywise turned up but he wasn't very scary. Then I woke up.
>>
>>87624019
They enter the sewers, immediately forget what they were doing there, and then leave, IT doesn't fuck with adults unless he's targeting them
>>
>>87620471
That's right Jay!
>>
>>87624080
It's better.
>>
>>87623875
Skarsgard's natural lankiness and the quilted aspect of his costume made Its limbs seem even more unnaturally long than they already were.

He really was an almost perfect Pennywise.
>>
>people thought the CG in It was bad
Explain
>>
>>87624537
I'm going to be honest, I didn't realize it was CG until IT starting doing impossible shit like the fridge scene
>>
>>87623894
In Fukunaga's original script it was, yes.

It was cut from the film due to rewrites though and that's why Fukunaga stepped down as the director.

>we will never see Sophia Lillia gang banged by post-pubescent boys
>>
>>87624687
The fridge part was fucking kino why isn't there a webm of that yet. And Skarsgard actually fit himself in that fridge too. He learned contortionism just for that scene
>>
>>87624080
Your assessment is correct.

The film is good and much better than the miniseries.

Pennywise is actually closer to how he acts in the novel than the miniseries in this film and Skarsgard nails the role.
>>
>>87624687
Skarsgard actually did the non-impossible contortions himself in that scene
>>
>>87608573
The original was a horrible piece of shit, pure millenial nostalgia.
>>
https://streamable.com/88mbm
>>
>>87624774
I'm gonna need sauce on that.

Because the fridge scene was freaky as fuck but not once did it NOT seem like CGI to me.

I wouldn't put it past Bill though, he seemed very dedicated to the character. He and the director decided not to introduce himself to the kid actors until he was fully in costume and filming the first scene where Pennywise appears, making a lot of their terror partially genuine.
>>
>>87624888
No, it was a masterpiece because of Tim Curry! Tim Curry was the perfect Pennywise! TIM CURRY TIM CURRY I DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER ARGUMENTS BUT I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THE MINISERIES WASN'T GOOD TIM CURRY TIM CURRY TIM CURRY TIM CURRY!

I like how every time "It" gets a thread someone has to shit on King. He's well aware of his hack status. He famously said in a Time interview in '86 that his books were the literary equivalent of a big Mac and fries and that he only had 3 original ideas in his entire career. That aside, I disagree slightly. His early short story collections were tight, atmospheric, and brutal. After he fried his brain on untold amounts of cocaine, pain pills and ego stroking, his writing suffered massively. However, to let a pleb like you slight someone with more talent in his pinky than your entire being is unconscionable. Fuck off, Dean Koontz.

Tim Curry is genuinely fucking terrifying and always will be, his pennywise has never lost its impact. This one is just fucking stupid, literally every decision about his portrayal is wrong and he achieves the incredible result of actually dispelling all the tension from fear in every single scene by being so stupid, you absolute fucking cretin, go shill on twitter instead.

Personally, I thought the characters in the new one seemed much more fleshed out, though I think they went a little overboard with the CGI usage in it.

Skarsgard was good. While Curry seemed more affably evil, Skarsgard seemed much more menacing. Unfortunately, he seemed scarier in the parts when he was talking rather than when he was actually attacking the children.

I think the relationships between the Losers seemed much stronger in the original. And, not to mention, Bev's dad. If anything, I think he was the creepiest character out of all of them.

The main issues I had with the new one were the over-usage of CGI, how the movie itself couldn't seem to decide whether it was PG-13 or R in it's horror aspect (some pretty gruesome scenes, others, more tame), and the face it seemed that everything mentioned in the movie had to be shown at some point: for example, I preferred the original in the aspect that you never actually knew what Pennywise meant by "floating" down here, in the original, those mysterious mentions are left in the dark, which I think adds more to the horror.
Original IT: 5/10 purely because of Curry.
New IT: 5/10.

Also, what the fuck was up with the whole deadlights deal?

Old "It" was hilariously funny and unusual. The new one is just your average "scary" movie that everyone has seen a hundred times already. No one gives a shit about it except for normalfags with a short attention span. And they will move on to the next "very scary and cool" movie when it gets out.
>>
>>87612853
not true, it's a cult classic for many people who were kids when it came out.
>>
>>87608573
I tell people to watch the new IT if they want to see a Stranger Things spinoff. But if they want to experience Stephen King's IT, listen to the audio book and get their shit rocked.

This movie played it safe and didn't explore what made IT or Pennywise terrifying. They touched on it with moments where adults ignored the horror happening to the kids or where other adults were horrific without IT manipulating them. It's an exhausting helpless feeling that the losers only overcome through the bond they share and the power lended to them by the turtle.

It's a shame, but oh well.

In 4 days, IT sold enough tickets to make back over 5 times its production costs, set more than a couple box office records, and set itself up for blockbuster status.

Was IT a great movie? Well, not really, but it IS a must-see for Steven King fans, and everyone who liked the book and the old mini-series with Tim Curry as Pennywise.

King fans-- the sort that dote on everything he's written-- are a strange bunch, and some of the most vicious arguments I've ever been involved in were with his fan club. King has written two and a half great novels, a lot of excellent short stories, and a giant pile of steaming offal. Try to read the Dark Tower series without incurring brain damage or swearing off the written word forever, yet there are literate idiots that will defend that dreck.

King fans, and in specific, IT (the novel) fans HAD to buy a ticket. These fans also HAD to cry like freshly spanked pubescent tweeners when they witnessed an 1,100+ page epic novel crammed into a two and a quarter hour flick: "character development! establishing scenes! background motivation!" they'll snivel.

OK, you have a huge novel as source, a small budget, but potentially a huge fan base... what do you do? Hire a director who cut his Hollywood teeth on commercials. Then the script will take fractions of half the novel, assemble them like snap together pieces of a linear jigsaw puzzle, and while it doesn't really tell the story, it's enough to sell tickets; lots of tickets.

For the mini series fans, SkarsgÄrd is no Tim Curry, although his makeup is far better as is his accompanying cgi. However, still no character development, no background, just brief scenes, one per character, to establish motivation.

The timing of the release was calculated as well. A low budget horror movie released in September, make some fat stacks, let it crash, then the director's cut shows up on pay channels, disc, and netflicks for Halloween.

>>87626418
