Why aren't they Fucking giving Orville a Fucking chance!?

The critics are right, it doesn't know whether it's a comedy or a science fiction adventure with mediocre special effects. It ends up being not very good on either level. It's not terrible, it's just bland. Predict it will be moved to a different time slot by episode 6 and there is no chance that it will be renewed, it's done.

Most of the negative reviews are basically saying "it's not funny" or it's too long. Seth repeatedly said it's not like Family Guy or Ted and its supposed to be a throwback to TOS and TNG Trek with comedic elements.

I liked the humour. It's obviously going to continually play on the sci-fi tropes and injokes but it was funny. Overall it felt like a really fun fan-made pastiche - only with a much better budget and cast. Even McFarlane wasn't all that annoying and it's cool that they're not making his character out to be the klutz - Ed seems like a genuinely competent type. Seatbelts > gun any day.
>>
>>87597193
i hope they downplay the jokes now that the characters and setting have been introduced

and agents of shield is sitting at a 93 now, so if this becomes good the score will raise, i predict a 50 in 5 episodes 90 by the end of the season and 110 by season 2.

I don't like the Pilot, you can have comedic elements and be funny without sounding like a lame twenty something behind the wheel of a car after watching a season of Family Guy. I was expecting more air jockey from him, the kinda smug Air Force fighter pilots get.

Instead he started out good (Poor Justin) and devolved into yet another snarky loser.

Also, anyone else feel like there was zero chemistry with the whole divorce plot, and found the constant referral to it very dry and forced?

>>
>>87601989
We're not talking about Discovery, we're talking about Orville. I agee Discovery will be the darling of reviewers, but that conversation is for another time.

The episode was not good. The special effects were alright and I liked the Krill, but everything else felt like... I don't know, like it's a parody episode of a better show? None of the species, characters or plots have impact, they never drew me in. The whole divorce plot was flat because they wouldn't shut up about it, the bridge crew are kind of forgettable, and Seth's got the passion but not the presence.
>>
>>87602036
if they keep up the quality of the pilot episode I will consider the show to be a success in my eyes. It had all the traits of a star trek episode, it had an actual sci fi plot, heck the fact that it had a plot at all was amazing to me. I thought it was just gonna be a family guy in space.

The straight man second officer is pretty fun, but that's mostly because of how deadpan his deliveries are.

If the rest of the crew delivered their lines like he does, I might like this show a bit more.
>>
>>87587845
I checked the Wikipedia page right after watching the episode. Now while I'm sure that some people got sneak peeks, I think most of those were (((critics))). The rating from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic was in the toilet *before it aired*, just from their reviews.

Well you know what? I expected to like it, and it turned out better than I expected. I expected more of a Galaxy Quest / Quark kind of spoof, and got something more like STAR TREK FUCK YEAH! And the dysfunctional crew just makes it more fun. It's Fox's new show, Married With Crew!

Some of the jokes fell flat, chemistry between the pilots felt a bit forced. Story/script felt a bit rushed.
I didn't dislike Seth as much as I thought I would, some funny jokes, good world building.

Will probably watch a couple more episodes to see if it gets any better.
>>
I feel like the humor would be better served by making it feel more naturalistic rather then playing it up like a zany gag.

Like the Bridge crew just shooting the shit about Seth's wife was funny and felt natural but some other bits felt forced like "It's been 5 min we need a joke here".
>>
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/TheOrville

>The series features many connections to Star Trek; Penny Johnson Jerald (Kasidy Yates on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) plays Doctor Claire Finn and fellow Star Trek alumni Brannon Braga, Robert Duncan McNeil, David A. Goodman, James Conway and Jonathan Frakes are involved behind the scenes.
>>
>>87587845

>>
Just watched it. Everything up until the scientist planet was pretty damn solid. After that it got very sloppy. The doctor lady sounds like she's reading the lines straight off of a page. The jokes are ok but they kind of slow things down. Ship effects shots are awesome. Music is solid. It sparked my curiosity for the next episodes.
>>
>>87604068
>I feel like the humor would be better served by making it feel more naturalistic

Agree, for the moment the humour fall flat because the delivery lack fluidity and the acting is a bit stiff.
>>
>>87606041
>After that it got very sloppy.
the script wasn't so sloppy, it's just that star trek is NEVER to be shot outdoors. Just make the sets in the studio and it's fine, the second real light hits those costumes all sense of belief falls apart
>>
>>87598751
same. It's very comfy. I feel like people who don't like it because it's "a star trek ripoff" don't actually understand star trek.

Show's probably gonna end up being a combination of Trek, Red Dwarf, and maybe Farscape.3
>>
>>87606619
That might be it, though I didn't really mean the script itself. Just the cinematography and editing were a bit all over the place.
>>
>>87604068
Taking a page from MASH feels like it would do well here; a bridge crew can be funny, but it needs to feel natural and "drier," you know?

Seth can't act. He can't get into a character that isn't "Seth MacFarlane in [situation]" his face (most notably his eyes) is not expressive enough to convey any kind of emotion. American Dad was his best work.

>>
>>87607520
There was absolutely zero chemistry between him and his ex-wife, too. Personally, them making it a "I want to fix this" relationship rather than two bitter divorcees is ruining it. Just makes her scenes awkward when ever other line coming out of her mouth is "I'm sorry" or "I want to fix this."

I thought it was a pleasant pilot. Story was good for an episode which had to set up the universe, a few more jokes hit than missed, and the cast seems talented enough (though I hope they grow into more chemistry). Funniest parts were straight-man 2nd officer's deadpan and black helmsman.

While it wasn't a revelation, I do think critics are shitting on it simply because it's fashionable to hate on Seth MacFarlane.

So this was a lot less comedic than I was expecting

It's basically just star trek for normies

I actually liked it a lot more than I was expecting to. References were kept to the absolute bare minimum (being set 400+ years in the future helps) and it didn't lean too far in one direction (sci-fi/comedy). If it can stick to just your (relatable) "Everyday Joe" working on a spacecraft dealing with life's little foibles and going on adventures I think it has some great potential to become an enjoyable, lighter, more grounded TNG.

Looking forward to see how the show plays out this season.
>>
I thought the pacing needed some work, but otherwise it was pretty fun.
>>
I'm not sure I'd trust a captain who's reaction to bad news was to spaz out and run away screamin "no no no no no" before violently assaulting a crewmember

Since reading isn't your strong point, I meant lighter in tone and more grounded than TNG... which had super-altruistic people living in a post-scarcity society.
>>
Just finished watching this myself, honestly pretty impressed by it. Some of the humour fell flat but it's only the pilot, they could do with just ditching a lot of the comedy and just try to make it a lighter TNG.

Hoping it does well and honestly can't figure out how it's getting such a battering from the critics. When will the ratings be out for it?

I'm watching it right now. It's kind of generic but I'm enjoying it and I'm actually semi invested in the characters and story. Could do without the """comedy""" though. I'll probably keep watching this.

One thing the web, the world, and 4chan has to do is break their Rotten Tomatoes addiction. This is the same fucking site that gave Force Awakens like a 95% fresh rating.

Find a few critics you like and read individual reviews. The RT formula is the reason why Hillary lost the election. They literally took every poll and squeezed it into one number and told her that she had a "98%" fresh chance of winning.

(and the show was bretty goo. No political shit, cutaway gags, and some fun lighthearted scifi).
>>
I'll say this, it had like a fucking feature-length movie plot, pared down to 45 minutes. Like, a whole thing.

Also, using trees as weapons was pretty good.

Yes, because Star Trek weenies who have a colossal hateboner on for Discovery, a show that hasn't even aired yet NEED this to be good. You see, on all of Star Trek's social media, every time they (understandably) shill their new show, the response is always a smug
>I for one will be watching the Orville! xD
As though you need to pick one or the other, and as though CBS/Paramount actually give a shit, because they know you'll be watching, even when you loudly proclaim you won't.

It's their protest vote, so to speak.

I for one, don't think Discovery looks particularly promising, but that doesn't mean I'm going to watch another episode of this shite. It was about as vapid and shit as I assumed it would be. My morbid curiosity has been proven right. If Discovery is crap then I'd rather have no new "trek" than to watch a fuck awful one in a protest that is ultimately just so much pissing in the wind.

Y'know what I really liked?
In Star Trek, like going back forever, if someone is regarded as a fantastic pilot, all we ever see of this characterization is them sitting at the control panel looking intense, but otherwise the plot/action is moving along as it would if we had not been told, for this scene, "we need the best pilot in the fleet." Now, obviously, that's a budgetary concern, can't have the models be flying around all crazy, because the special effects just aren't there.

But here, we are told this weird drunk, personal friend of both Mercer and his ex-wife, he's the best of the best... Then when the situation calls for him to BE the best of the best, the ship does exactly what we always wondered why they never did in Star Trek, fly around like fuckin' crazy because all the ships have forward-facing main weapons and seem to be slow to aim/pivot. So fuckin' go crazy. The ship spinning doughnuts around the Krill (c'mon, I know that's the Jem'Hadar) ship was fantastic. It's exactly what I've always wanted.

Some shows on Rotten Tomatoes get a really really good score because all the reviewers think it is just a bit better than average. Other get a really really bad score because they are just a bit worse than average. That's what happened here. It's not that great and it's 100% guaranteed to get cancelled. They'll let the season run because it was expensive but it's definitely not returning.

Also the bad reviews have nothing to do with anything political you goddamned autists.

I liked it. It was fun but it still felt like "Star Trek". The battle was pretty dumb but I think it's supposed to be cheesy as a homage to the original Star Trek. The scene where the Super Strength girl somehow smashed through the door using her body weight (or lack thereof) in a stunning display of stupidity. I'd say that moment was my main critique.

I disliked her superjump more than her super smash
>>
>>87623322

Well at least the superjump made logical sense:
John Carter-esque super jumps might make sense for a character from a planet of high gravity. But smashing through concrete with your body momentum isn't a result of stronger muscles, its a result of having mass of several tons and greater physical durability than concrete and steel. No humanoid body made of meat could do it no matter how strong.

I thought it was great, classic TNG Trek with a few MacFarlane style twists to it. Far better than what /tv/ and critics are giving it credit for.

It's certainly tenfold better than fucking Star Trek Discovery, which I imagine is part of the reason critics have trashed it.
>>
>>87587845
I watched the first episode a while ago. It's actually a pretty enjoyable show. It feels like a good, light-hearted Star Trek installment. I actually got upset at some points because it felt like the humour was getting in the way a bit.

I'm not sure if it was just poor comedic timing at some points or if I just find Seth that annoying, but him and the ex-wife's jokes kept pulling me out of the moment.

Still, I'm excited to see more.

Some didn't stick, but there were several that I liked. I liked the 'we're still figuring out the names' 'pseudo data being racist' and the captain's bff.

I also liked how they defeated the enemy with a tree.

I think people were either expecting a really funny show or an intense parody of ST, but it was neither. If they're clever enough they'll do both.

But perhaps fox is too dumb to cater to trekkies. Not that we're smart or anything; fox typically aims for the widest audience though and not everyone understands the little details of TNG or DS9.
