Slowly we rot.

the 90s was prosperous. it was almost like the 50s. we came up with the most happy, prosperous era and all the videogames, entertainment, technology went with it. the rest got the post 9/11,the economic downturn, the sjw cancer. We were lucky to have a tiny ass pocket where things weren't fucked up.

What a glorious year it was.

Also, late-90s/early-00s internet was fun -- with the exception of connection-speed.
>>
>>87578497
>with the exception of connection-speed.

Thinking back, that actually made it better. Because you had to actually put effort into finding something online so it stopped us just vegetating watching YouTube videos and browsing bullshit memes for hours a day.
>>
>>87578626
While that is true, I just hated waiting for a page/image to load and then freeze out and I'd have to reload it. Though, it'd usually just start where it left off.

There was a LOT more variety in websites, though -- especially with Angelfire/Geocities running rampant.
>>
>>87578626
And when you DID find something, it often was something genuinely interesting and weird.

But then normies ruined the Internet. This place used to be literally just for all the freaks and geeks. A paraside.

70s born fag here with a protip:

You only remember the 90s so fondly because you were kids and didn't have to really think about all the fucked up shit that was going on. The LA Riots, Oklahoma City bombing, numerous civil wars and attempted genocides, political scandals, corporate scandals.

The reason you're yearning for the era of your youth is that you're older now and you have to face things. Take off the rose colored glasses and stop masturbating to Saved by the Bell.
>>
>>87577814
The 90s were total shit. Blockbuster was fucking garbage. They used to censor their movies. They never had anything but top 10 shit and kiddie films. Real movie fans went to mom & pop stores.

The 90s was the start of aggressive PC culture. We also had to see that cunt Hillary Clinton trying to run the country even though she was just the first lady.

The music was terrible, the movies were terrible, the video games were terrible. The 90s were shit all around.

Ever notice how it's often agreed upon on 4chan that everything went to shit in 2007 (Great Recession, iPhones, Tumblr founded, rise of Facebook, Big Bang Theory popularizing "cool nerds" and "geek chic"). And Malcolm in the Middle had its last episode in 2006? This is not a coincidence.

Malcom was one of the last pieces of culture from before the current era. It instilled values in us as Americans, values that we lost in a sea of smartphones and social media after it ended.

Do you honestly think the kind of environment it made fun of was "fun" and "magical" for people who were actually adults at that time? You were just a child, of course you found a time where you had no problems to be magical.
>>
>>87578307
Definitely. Kids that don't remember 9/11 do not get along with college kids that do. Pre-9/11 kids are a lot more optimistic - they go to college to chase their dreams, even if it's a pipe dream. Kids that never knew the world before 9/11 are much bigger realists; they go to community college for STEM even if they hate it.
>>
>>87579637
Speaking of 2007 changing things, I've noticed an odd phenomenon with people my age(22). Most people in my graduating class(2013) relate to Ben 10(2005, mostly the first 2 seasons), Avatar the last airbender, and American dragon: jake long with our childhoods, albeit our late childhoods.

But shows like Chowder, Flapjack, and Back to the Barnyard, which came out just a mere 1-2 years later, people my age see as 'garbage' or something that was not for us, but for the graduating classes a few years younger than us.

It seems like anything that debuted in the 2005-2006 school year was the last to have an impact on our childhoods, while anything that debuted in the 2006-2007 school year and later was not part of people my age's childhoods what so ever.

Why would Putin want a bunch of violent Africa-tier savages from Ukraine? They only took in places like Dagestan and Chechnya because they're too shit to be stable countries on their own. If the hohols want their own country to run around and be nuisances, all the better for them. Putin just took Crimea because it was the only land of real value in the entire country.

Belarus will probably willingly join Russia after Lukashenko dies, Putin wouldn't want to take it over because Lukashenko's Soviet wannabe leadership produces resources that Russia needs in an optimal way.

Millennials are a generation of humans born between the birth of AIDS and 9/11. Or 1980 and 2001. Or 1982 and 2004. Or 1980 and 2000. Or 1980 and 1995. Or 1981 and 1997. Or 1977 and 1994. Or 1990 and 2001. Or 1995 and 2005. Or after 1980. Whatever group of young people that older people dislike. Depends on who is writing the thinkpiece you read.

Yeah, because every town had a blockbuster. Yeah. Nobody in this thread or in any thread ever, was required to show at a small/local mom-and-pop establishment. Never.

We all. ALL OF US. We all had the same childhood. We all went to Blockbuster and Pizza Hut!

2013 here also.

I've thought about the same thing before and would agree with you. I actually remember 2006 being the last year I watched any of those cartoons regularly, besides the occasional rerun. I think Gen Xers fail to realize how much happened during the (late) 90s and (early) 00s so it's ridiculous to group those people in the same category.

In truth, millennials don't really remember the world before the Internet and cellphones. (And there doesn't seem to be any agreed upon term for those that were born after them, like in the past 15 years or so.)

I'm a lazy prick now but as a kid (when it was the only option), getting in the car and going to a giant video store was pretty cool. I think that's what the basis of this thread is. Millennial nostalgia often involves tinted shades, my friend this is the internet.

Millennials aren't just people born after the 1990s by the way...

But in all seriousness it was a more chill, less daffy decade with largely better music and high waisted bikinis so waxing nostalgia is healthy to an extent. Much of the media I enjoy happens to be from the 1990s, and I was born in 1990.

If you want candy, you go out and buy some candy in bulk. It's the cheapest option.

But when you go to Blockbuster, it's the experience of renting a movie. You wouldn't bring a week of bag lunches with you on a vacation, would you? Of course not. You spend more because it's a treat, and it's convenient, and you don't mind that cost for the convenience once in a while.

Does being poor rot your brain?

Murder rates were higher though. Early 90's wasn't very rad (hence Grunge, which was kind of rad).

It made for some good weird media though - Liberals were less snowflakey censorious faggots back then, so we got good books like Apocalypse Culture.

Late 90's were gay as fuck - but I have to admit, they were pretty feel good all around.

We went from this

The Bad Years;

2001

2008 (crash, normies)

2011 (normies, smart phones times ten, political slacktivism, sjw's)

For older fags, 91-96 were good years for art, movies, music, literature - but shitty years for economy, crime (although I think it officially peaked in like '93 and began to rescind). 96-2001 were fucking gravy though. I imagine that's what the boom period of the early-mid 80's might have been like for people, or the 50's-60's. Everything seemed on the up and up, the internet was fucking fun and new, jobs were everywhere with great prospects, and then the bubble burst and the fucking 2000's happened, and instead of getting good at the end of the decade like we all hoped, it just got fucking worse.

It's absolute shit out there now. What a rough time for young bros.

and played the new game until my heart was content
rinse, recycle repeat for all new game

worked everytime unless i forgot to destroy the old/returned games motherboard in which id have to put sticker back on and return it undamaged....then try again at a new store

i always post this in every blockbuster thread wondering if anyone ever did this

literally made me a master of sticker removal perfection
>>
>>87579957

We loved that movie when it came out.

Sadly, in retrospect, it was much comfier than what we've ended up with. No one expected things to go belly up the way they did. Back in the late 90's you actually thought having a stable job and income was a drag and annoying.

It's kind of scary - The early 90's were fucked up, but things came right again. They had their huge crime peak and economic crash in 87 - by 97 things were so good people were calling it the "End Of History".

It doesn't look like a recovery is coming anytime soon now.

>YouTube alone is better than anything (for both entertainment and fapping) I had back then available to me.

The 90s was a great and fun time.

Many now redundant forms of media and lifestyle reached a kind of peak; music, cinema, magazines, newspapers, fashion etc. People still lived in a world they vaguely understood where things had just got constantly better, particularly in the period between the end of the cold war and the rise of Islamic terror.

Nothing new has really happened since, its all internet. Its noteworthy that music and fashion haven't changed really in about 20 years, its the first time stuff like this has stalled since the 1950s, there isn't any youth culture. If you went from, say, 1976-1986 you'd have had to burn all your clothes and records at least three times not to get laughed at in the streets.

The other thing is that politically, in the 90s people were over stuff, post-sex, post-race. You've got SJWs today pushing identity, the 90s vibe was that nobody gave a fuck (which still seems better to me). Its amazing how liberal people were compared to today where its all gone back to the 1950s.

Smartphones, Fiber internet, our almost obsessive desire to be connected and online at all times, the ability to communicate instantly with anyone, anywhere on the planet,
it has completely globalized our culture, congealing all trends and cultural etiquettes into a big melting pot.

I predict that in our lifetimes, (bar cultures that are reclusive in of themselves like tribes, religious monastics etc.) we will live in a globalist, culturally centrist world, where memetic trends live and die in a heartbeat.

Although most of the 'muh generation' talk is bullshit, a line has to be drawn somewhere unless you want to dump the concept of generations entirely. Since people are born everyday there always is some overlap. It really depends on which boxes you wanne check that 'define' a generation. They are probably even different across regions and nations.

I was 15 when 9/11 happenend, and consciously witnessing that and the social effects thereafter probably affected a lot of my contemporaries. However, how different would that effect have been for a 21 year old? Maybe not much. But that 21 year old would have been 12 when the Soviet Union collapsed whereas I was 6. Although I can vaquely remember it, I was far too young to realize a historical event was taking place while it probably affected twelve year olds in the same way 9/11 did.

Saddam's secular regime was the only thing that was preventing Wahhabist/Iranian influence in Iraq

>it's convenient and banal

Yes, and when we were comming up in the nineties oldfags found multiple tv channels, VHS tapes and remote controls convenient and banal.

>when we were young we all had to watch at the same time because there was no VCR/most people couldn't afford them. Now that was social!
>we had to get up to actively change the channel! Now you can just 'zap'. Laaaazy!
> Multiple channels? How decadent! we just watched what was on! That grew character!

Jesus, my parents were already 38 when they got me, so they lived through a time where most people didn't have a TV, and kids came together to watch the few shows there were, in black and white, together. My parents weren't rich so we had a TV without a remote even in the early nineties.

This shit is relative. People ten years younger then me will act as if not having a smart phone during their childhood will make them hardcore like my contemporaries talk about not having a mobile phone at all.

>secular

After the Gulf war Saddam's regime shifted an incorporated more and more Islamist elements, which partially is the reason so many former Baath members joined ISIS or other islamist groups.

Also, while Saddam might have had a stabilizing effect on the simmering cold war between the Shia Islam of Iran and its allies and wahhabi Sunni Islam of Saudi and its allies, that doesn't make his regime less brutal. He was much more genocidal than other regional hell holes.

But that wasn't my point. The possibility of regional escalation was one of the core reasons why I was against the Iraq invasion, besides some dumb leftwing talking points I still believed then (muh oil). But many on the left went nuts and acted like there was nothing wrong with Iraq and it was Bush instead of Saddam who needed to be compared to Hitler. Even then I thought that was insane, and I hated Bush (and our pussy Dutch government sucking his dick).

>People were nicer in general.
Just no. However, people are nicer now because they can get put on blast on the internet or stalked to their doorstep through social media.

Before CGI ruined everything.

As someone who grew up as an adolescent in the 90's, I can tell you that today is really not much different.

While the technology changed, it really only improved on existing technology. The one exception would be the iphone/smart phone.

Otherwise, people really just did the exact same things today just in a different medium. Instead of Blockbuster we have Netflix, instead of chat rooms we have social media, instead of ps4 we had ps1.

In fact, the liberal and conservative elements also existed but were just backwards. Back then, conservatives complained and liberals rebelled. Today, its the opposite, with the conservatives being quiet and socially rebelling and the liberals loud and pushy.

Never went to a Blockbuster as a kid. Used the public library instead.

It's retarded to roll thirty five year olds in with 22 year olds and call it a "generation" though. Millennials should encapsulate at absolute earliest born in 99.

I love when people say they missed so-and-so, yet they're oblivious to the improved innovations of today that makes the experience less of a hassle.
