The only thing separating him from similar weirdos in the eyes of the public is that he made a lot of money off it - which instantly legitimizes it.

Being dedicated to sushi and washing rice for half a decade "in preparation" are two completely different things. At some point you're either the best you'll ever be at fucking around with rice or you're just a slow learner.

There are many things in the world that take decades to master.

Making sushi isnt one of them. Fuck off weebitors.
>>
>>87501625
nope. honing your craft and respecting people who achieve a high level of skill is as old as craftmanship itself and regarded as culturally necessary by the majority of people. In literally every field humans can measure themselves there are exceptional individuals who try to be the best. People who can't see that are most likely edgy autists with no willpower who are ostracized from society for good reasons.
>>
>>87501731
>>87501828
Trademark millennial attitude to miss the point and assume intellectual superiority in place of understanding. The sushi isn't the point, it's that you'll never be happy with your work and lives so everything needs to be trivialized so as to not hurt your feelings.

Let's assume the money isn't a factor, since I already said I'm jealous of the money. What's left is this:
>don't spend years of your life making sushi over and over
>don't get documentary or customers who remember your fish for a few years
vs
>get to spend your free time not making sushi over and over
I'll take the 2nd one. That applies to whether it's making sushi, flipping burgers, or forging swords.
>>
>>87501877
Again, nothing wrong with dedication. But there comes a point where you're not doing or making people do things to get better at it and instead are just making people do basic chores for an arbitrarily long period of time under the guise of giving them "special magical training".

Then go be a sushi chef if it's easy. I had to run hot laps and drive rallies for years until I finally got to drive a pace car, it takes a long time and real dedication if you want get good at something. I know it's intimidating when you look at someone who has a lifetime invested in something and compare them to yourself, you want to delegitimize it to protect your ego, but that's the wrong way to cope if you want happiness.
>>
>>87501904
The sushi kind of is the point since we're talking about a guy who dedicated his time making sushi. Someone who dedicates his time trying to invent something, cure something, etc is much more understandable. A higher pursuit is one thing, but you're making it out like there can be no distinction between what people consider worthwhile. Of course people are going to have more respect and place more value in someone whose passion is saving lives instead of making one fish based meal. It's not Jiro's fault, you can't really consciously choose what you're passionate about, but that doesn't make me care about sushi. It's not some armchair psychology nonsense. It's someone spending so much time on something I consider trivial, so it's absurd and comical.

Of course he made out like a fucking bandit anyway, so he doesn't give a shit.

There's a difference between saying making amazing sushi is easy and "It doesn't take three years to learn how to wash rice". How are you not grasping this.

>projecting this hard
>>
>>87502336
He said the busiest so I'd assume there's multiple of the same restaurant.
>>
>>87502321
Again, the sushi isn't necessarily the point. You can stop at "a guy who dedicated his time." You were close when you said we don't get to decide what's worthwhile and what isn't. The fact is we get about 80 good years of life if we're lucky, we value and respect people who dedicate themselves to something and have a wealth of knowledge to pass down, it's just the way our society has always been. Can't move forward unless someone collects and shares knowledge.

I see what you're driving at, why respect a 50 year veteran cop vs a 50 year veteran rock tumbler, but still, you get into an objectivity vs subjectivity argument which goes nowhere.
>>
>>87502336
calm down autismo
>>
>>87502424
The only reason you'd cry "projecting" is because a nerve got plucked. Nobody ITT has a frame of reference for what it takes to become a world class sushi chef, so just stop. Maybe you don't need to be a rice whisperer, but the 80 year old Japanese master chef who dedicated his life to sushi says you do, and gee, whose word should people take on this one?
>>

Just like their stupid habit about waiting 3 decades before you roll your first log of sushi, regular jap customers also follow this retarded tradition

If they see that the staff just said fuck the system and started doing their own thing, the restaurant would go bust. The customers are just as insane as the old bastards making the sushit. The whole thing is about believing the lie, everyone plays along.. from the cook down to the morons throwing money at them to shove raw fish bits and rice in their mouths. They would never eat anything from a non-jap anyway, not even weebs would do it

Sushi was the first meme food. These Japanese "people" literally took garbage and hid it in rice. But, instead of flavor they added stoicism and aristocracy body movements (bowing). Boom food culture. Fact the shittiest fast food burger has more flavor layers than yourshitty insipid rice octopus role. Have a nuke, you feckless fuck.

I claim projecting because you're making wild stabs in the dark with your armchair psychology and use your "findings" to dismiss arguments. These thoughts have to come from somewhere and you are the most likely source. And being an amazing chef does not keep you from having illogical practices. He clearly grew up with the Time Dedicated trumps Skill so even more time is even better results -attitude you'll often find in Japan and naturally he'll keep it up in his teachings. It must annoy him that people can do that and so much more in half the time because they're not bound by tradition and instead measure their result with actual skill.
>>
>>87502626

Not that guy but it's not impossible to imagine that there's some tomfoolery going on with that business, they have an interest in maintaining their mystique for marketing purposes, and they have an interest in restricting the supply of chefs who are perceived as legitimate. Yes we are laymen but I've also cooked rice and cooked eggs once or twice and I honestly am very skeptical that it takes quite that long to learn to do it professionally.

In a blind taste test you probably wouldn't be able to tell what was his and what was a moderately priced sushi place just like most other 3 star Michelin restaurants. I find it ironic that your knee-jerk defensive reaction is to call your opponent a mindless consumerist, when Japan is arguably one of the most consumerist cultures on the planet, because of the very culture you're romanticising so much. A culture of hundreds of millions of people aren't all going to grandmasters at a craft, there is going to be hundreds of millions of mediocre individuals brought up in a culture that promotes mastery, dilligence, and discipline. Now while this can lead to productive, humble people alright with their relative station, it leaves a big mess of middle-level people perpetually lost in life. This is the type of culture that consumerism runs rampant in; especially with all the mass media and toys in Japanese culture, it's all distractions to stave off existential crises in that culture (and it's barely holding it back).

The most ironic icing on the cake to this argument that detractors are cultureless consumer drones, is that the sushi industry has been trendy and globally commercialized for 30+ years, and the movie itself, while not a blockbuster by any means, is widely distributed and commonly known even in dreaded "flyover" country. So it is immensely amuseing that any defenders use consumerism of all things against detractors.

Of course I realize Japan is a consumerist society, and you have valid points in that regard, but I wasn't defending that aspect of it. I was defending the traditions and culture that still persists to this day even within overwhelming consumerism and the arguable damaging effects of Westernization. The documentary I linked demonstrates just that, and it's a bit of a stretch to suggest I'm romanticizing Japan's culture when all I'm really doing is pointing aspects of it out.
>the sushi industry has been trendy and globally commercialized
Where did I attempt to defend sushi as a culinary practice? Nowhere. I was responding to the claim that Jiro's dedication to his craft is somehow archaic. Jiro built his business up from nothing, worked his entire life, all within "one of the most consumerist cultures" as you mention. So clearly despite the prevalence of consumerism, Japanese customers supported and appreciated his business as well as his craft. You bring up Japan, but it's a null argument, because Jiro made his success in Japan. Now, the consumers from overseas watching this documentary and mocking his dedication and craft is what threads like these pertain to, and what I was responding to originally.
>>
>>87506232
>Old, dedicated japanese men are also grumpy fucking assholes

Just fyi Japan's economy is constantly being stifled by their cultural baggage regarding work, from their pathalogical fear of risk preventing startups to the taboo of quitting trapping people in dead end redundant jobs.
>>
>>87506259
>I was defending the traditions and culture that still persists to this day even within overwhelming consumerism and the arguable damaging effects of Westernization.
Except you completely missed my point that the very culture you romanticise is the same culture that fuels and propagates the same rampant consumerism in their own society, because that consumerism fills an existential void that culture leaves in society (with the mass majority of random individuals who can't reach mastery and/or can't accept that reality). And the whole point of bringing consumerism up, is because anyone that dared to be unimpressed with Jiro were being called cultural-less, consumer drones, which is complete hypocritical bullshit.
>Where did I attempt to defend sushi as a culinary practice? Nowhere.
Consumerism was the point of the argument (or more accuratly, strawmanning consumerism to berate detractors of Jiro), and the point was that sushi is a consumerized industry. Jiro's craft is in that industry. It isn't hard to follow.
>You bring up Japan, but it's a null argument, because Jiro made his success in Japan
No, YOU brought up Japan by omission when you started your "hurr you dumb consumerist burger" bullshit argument.
>all within "one of the most consumerist cultures" as you mention. So clearly despite the prevalence of consumerism, Japanese customers supported and appreciated his business as well as his craft.
Again, this is incorrect because you're assuming that the consumerism is not part of his own culture. Of course with Jiro himself is above it, but that isn't an aspect of his culture, it's an aspect of him, and what makes him a master at his craft.
>and what I was responding to originally.
Yes and there is my initial issue, is that all of the "arguments" to anything against Jiro, sushi, or the movie, consisted of said poster being a "consumerist, culture-less, western drone". This shitty strawman of a non-argument is what I had issue with.

Why are you so emotionally invested in everyone acknowledging the old man's achievement and being jealous of him? Are you jealous of Tom Cruise because he made good movies? Why is it necessary to be jealous of every specialist or else to intensely appreciate them? The world is full of specialists. Most people are specialists, if for no other reason then just so they can put food on the table.

If his dream is playing with rice, why can't anon's dream be shitposting or doing speedruns of irrelevant fucking games or whatever else? What significance does cooking have beyond making food edible and pleasant at some sort of baseline value? Why is it better to make overpriced food than to waste time shitposting just because Japan has a rich cultural history of food? Literally every developed nation on earth has a cultural history of food and cultures surrounding food, because it's a survival-tier need as well as an easy indicator of wealth and luxury to prepare expensive foods or go to extra trouble.

Thomas Crapper revolutionized the entire world and saved incalculable lives with his toilet design, does that mean I and the sushi guy have to be jealous of him or else conscientiously avoid making jokes about him so we don't come off as too disrespectful and make people think we're jealous?

But recreating something as 'simple' as spaghetti and meatballs or a Beef Wellington, or even just making a nice gravy to accompany a lamb chop/steak requires infinite more skill/knowledge than preparing sushi.

Sushi chefs aren't chefs. They don't cook anything. They're not using chemistry or intuition to recreate a dish that requires multiple steps involving both. Presenting you with what mother nature created in raw form, in pretentious way, and taking credit for it, is a total joke.

That is a good point except i don't even belief son enjoys making sushi, he was forced into it by his dad, and dad was forced into it be poverty, to a point where making a sushi for them can be very similar to masturbation, just more nuanced one: you do something that you progress in, that you are praised for yet it may as well not touch your core. And honestly both of them felt pretty hollow.

Overall the whole issue is extremely nuanced: while it's true that you don't necessarily may need to peel the radish for all those years how do you determine exactly when one should stop? Surely you learn something neat about radish but is it truly needed for the taste?

It may be that tradition replaces the love for the craft, and of course tradition is much more reliable: you do something that is specifically written instead of what feels right. And tradition/rulefags can't rely on their feelings because they seemingly don't have any.

Okay here is the reason I think that people are triggered by "10k hours mastery" guys: a lot of them were pulled in into the whole thing by a chance, if you research stuff like shame in order to "fill the hole" people can both become total losers and superachievers while remaining unhappy. Add to that that those who "start from the bottom", children of immigrants and whatnot have a huge push to getting to mastery as well. So now these fags get to the top and go all "I was working hard so i rule, you were not so you are shit". While it's kinda true it kinda isn't because for them doing "hard work" felt better than not doing hard work, also that "hard work" was infinitely more satisfying than you trying to read through one page for twenties time and thinking that you are a lazy fuck.

tl;dr in a very significant way they lucked out even though, because they are brainlets, they will look at stuff like money and be all "well i had a single crack addict mom and ate dirt so i didn't have an advantage" even though it in itself is an advantage.

People should enjoy the place they are at without self shaming, be it at the top or bottom, right now it's impossible to do as a system but an individual can learn to do so.

That boiling stuff is oil? Oil is supposed to catch on fire when it starts boiling at that point.
