What's some essential "I'm 14 and fucking love cinema"-core?
It upset me on how disappointing this movie was.
everything by David Lynch
Drive
Christopher Nolan movies
The Fall
Moon
that's some of the 2010s "dumb teenage boy taste" canon from what i've seen. 10 years ago it would have been Fight Club, American, Psycho, The Butterfly Effect, etc. etc.
their leading man hero also went Bale ---> Rockwell ---> Gosling
tarkovsky, kurosawa, godard, herzog, chan-wook park, seagal, pasolini, etc.

I was also unimpressed on the first go-round but I watched the upload again like two years ago and I liked it a lot more this time round. Experimental. The outfits of the hooded figures also change as they go from Sunn O))) looking guys, to like these factory dudes in the quarry or whatever. The musical fluorishes, where they do happen, are also really nice, especially as the woman (Nature) emerges into the world.
The barren landscape that the train of hooded figures struggle against in the first part also explicitly references the famous still of Seventh Seal IIRC. At least I made that connection.
Merhige has also made a companion short for Begotten, which should be easily found online (I forget the name). It's not nearly such a chore, at only about 15 min, but Begotten is better IMO. Apparently he wants to do a third piece for the cycle.
I still don't quite know what to make of the "man" who is basically a useless fetus through the whole thing.

These are all good directors and well made films. Bad answers my guys.
Begotten is different because there's no substance to it, it's just a bunch of pseudosymbolic visual noise. Some people like it because they think it's artsy or deep or something.

this. I hate drive and the fall so much for being this overrated. literal cringe-core

there is a rather obvious religious subtext to the film.
