>>
>>87502932
That one scene in particular isn't supposed to be especially scary, I don't think. It's meant to show that he really doesn't give a shit whether or not people see him as an actual clown so he gives a half-assed dance to rub it in.

The entire movie is laughable B-movie CGI.

It's god fucking awful. I'm not even nostalgic about Tim Curry's portrayal. The movie itself is just pure ass.

Every fucking horror trope is thrown in. There were a few good ideas thrown in, but executed so fucking poorly it's almost funny. Every time Pennywise is supposed to do something "scary", they use that stupid shaky cam when he walks anywhere. Any time he opens his mouth is looks horrible. All the dick characters are put over the top anime villains to shame. Shit, the film gives more screen time to the bully, than to half of the "losers". And the 15 minute long "kids play in their underwear" scene was just...fucking why?

A lack of character development. A lack of actual scares. Downright terrible CGI. And a villain that fell flat on his face the entire movie.

And, they marketed it as just "IT", but the credits refer to it as "IT: Chapter 1", so the second half can go fuck itself. I'd rather suffer through the miniseries again.

How did it get higher than a 5 for you?

The only scene it did better than the miniseries was Bev's bathroom scene. The only interesting original scene was the 3 door scene.

They completely glossed over half of the cast of Losers. Developed the "bully" character more than main characters. Cheap, predictable jumpscare abuse throughout. Constantly use of humor in "tense" situations (none of which came from Pennywise), Objectively low-end visual effects.

I'm not trying to be a dick. But how any critic is giving this higher than...maybe a low 6 is beyond me. Maybe if Pennywise was actually interesting...I'd be swayed to a 6. But he's literally a Harry Potter Boggart now. Hell, the projector scene reminded me so much of Clown from Harry Potter 3. They looked identical.

I think I've only read two Kind novels, and that was because at the time when I was a kid reading them I was the opposite of edgy so I didn't like reading all the profanity, gore and rape shit. I've read Insomia, and some other book about a south-western city that's been taken over by evil or some stupid thing like that, and the sherriff gets possessed and slowly rots away.
>>
>>87504566
You could cut the novel into 50% less edgy and it would still be too edgy.
>>
I was shocked when I came to /tv/ and every thread wasn't about Bev.

Call it contrarianism all you want. You have shit taste in film if you praise this for anything outside of giving it a half-assed attempt.
>>87504612
No you pedo, it added nothing to the plot. It was just meant to be a "oh look at the gang having some summer fun together to prove how close they are now" scene, and it wasn't needed. They could've cut the jumping, the fighting, and the turtle misdirection; and spent the screen time actually trying to tell a decent story.

>>87504566
If schools embraced the fun edginess they'd get more kids interested in reading which would evolve into them reading all sorts of authors. Everybody in the theater burst out laughing here, I enjoyed this part since I never actually expected the fucker to end up dancing.
>>

>>
>>87505278
No one in my theater laughed. I thought it was genuinely one of the creepiest parts of the film.
>>
>>87505207
depends on what you mean by scared.
If you are an autistic basement dweller incapabable of basic emotion or feeling then i imagine you wouldnt understand tension or unease, which is what substitutes for true fear when watching a film.
If you genuinely expect that a horror film wants its audience to literally fear for their life then you are the one who needs to grow up.
>>
>>87505144
Nothing, and I mean nothing in this movie is even close to "scary". It's full of predictable jump scares, that overused bullshit shaky cam...it's just all bad.

I mean...watch Georgie's scene in the remake. It's hilariously stupid. The entire reason Georgie loses his boat is because he runs up to 2 (two) wooden barriers (pic related). He ducks under the first one, and hits the second one and knocks himself flat on his back; even those they were spaced so far apart that he could literally stand between them and spread his arms and not touch either. But that's how the movie starts off. Georgie gives himself a concussion because apparently he's fucking retarded and just runs head first into shit.
>>
>>87504332
exactly what it made me think of

It's a crime that this low budget horror director though that a cheesy greenscreen behind Pennywise doing a shuck would be OK.

I am diagnosed autistic and understand horror just fine. In fact it is my favorite genre. I love horror stories. If Mr. Muschietti talks about the dirt details of this film I will understand his reasoning. Please don't use my apparent disability to make a zinger.
>>
>>8750537
the orange swirl is literally Pennywise. In the novel as adults, Ben sees Pennywise's ACTUAL form and says it's "endless writhing orange lights" so it's literally just a part of Pennywise
>>
>>87505366
you either never spoke to anyone as a kid and have never interacted with a child ever in your entire life or you came out of the womb with a fully developed brain because that is 100% how stupid 7 year old children actually are. It is not beyond suspension of disbelief that a 7 year old isnt as careful as they could be.
>>
>>87505277
>>87505321
I believe the logic that the movie was going for was that the flood of light from the door opening would make it so the Pennywise "projection" was too dim to see; and thus wouldn't be enough to scare the kids. Who knows. It doesn't work though, because right after this scene was when Billy goes to confront Pennywise because he's tired of his shit.

The scene wasn't scary to the audience, and it apparently wasn't that scary to the cast because they go right to the hideout after it.

>>
>>87505277
It's not though, after they let in light Pennywise is still in the projector for a few seconds before completely disappearing. You have to remember that that wasn't him physically, but a psychic apparition meant to scare the kids. Them letting in light leads to them thinking they'll be safer which leads to them not being scared anymore, which pisses of Pennywise.

Not really.

He really only does shit to the kid when no one else is around. The movie points out that the adults can't see any of the shit the kids are seeing, so I don't know why Pennywise would be adverse to fucking with them in public. But most of the shit he does to them is either when it's just the kids, or them by themselves.

The movie does the "Just remember none of this is real" like it's fucking Nightmare on Elm Street. Except Freddy is fun and Pennywise is...somewhere between boring and stop fucking drooling in even screen you're in.

>scares child
>tries to capture/eat child
>lazily lets child get away if chasing it is too much work
On top of that, Pennywise can't hurt you if you're not afraid of it. That's why it has Henry and Bev's husband do all its work for it.

Hello Mr. Phony
>>lazily lets child get away if chasing it is too much work
Not once does this happen in the book. Feel free to give an example. The only clean escape was Ben with the Mummy. He was saved by the bell. IT was mere inches from killing him even so. There was no sign that IT let him get away like some epic Joker Baby.
>>
This movie fucking bothers the shit out of me. I saw it last night and I can't stop thinking about it, something feels so off. Most of the film was good but the movie does some weird random shit at certain points and breaks the immersion (playing Hanging Tough at Ben's house was really bizarre, the goofy scenes in the house)

I didn't like how the bullies weren't present at the final battle. Henry tries to kill Mike and gets dropped down a well instead of going insane after Pennywise murders his buddies. He contributed nothing to the final confrontation other than waste some time.

Mike was easily the weakest of the kids since they gave his largest role in the story to Ben for whatever reason. He feels really shoehorned in while all the other characters are great. It's still the best modern American horror film I've seen in ages (not hard to do though) but it could've been so much more IMO.
>>
>>87505702
I believe the original intent was back in the day before clowns got the bad rep they have now...they were supposed to be figures of fun. Someone kids would want to be around because they were fun. So Pennywise took the form of a clown because he could lure in kids.

The Remakes Pennywise...who the fuck knows. He doesn't nothing clown-like, looks like some try-hard faggot trying to make a viral video, and doesn't even have a sense of humor. He makes reference to a circus like 3 times in the movie...and we don't even see anything circus like from him or anyone. It's like the director just said "Fuck why he's a clown... just make him look spooky" which defeats the fucking purpose.

Bill Denbrough is now a successful horror writer living in England with his actress wife, Audra. Beverly Marsh is a fashion designer in Chicago, who has married an abusive man named Tom Rogan. You don't know much about King, do you? Every single fucking protagonist in every single fucking King book is a writer from New England. The Dark Tower was one of the few exceptions, and then King fucking literally wrote himself in. Here's a thing I really liked about the movie:

The first couple times you see each kid's version of the monster (the leper, the creepy painting face lady, etc), it's legitimately scary. But the movie knows that, as with any movie monster, every time you see them clearly, they get a little less scary. So after you've seen creepy painting lady three or four times, she's not scary anymore. You start seeing the seams, thinking about the visual effects, etc.

But IT gets that, and paces that gradual loss-of-novelty so it coincides with the kids losing fear of Pennywise. So by the final scene, when he's crazily shapeshifting in the sewers while they beat the shit out of him, it's really not all that scary anymore; it's just exciting and cool to watch. It basically becomes a fucking anime.

I really dug it.

Sure, but they didn't character build either. They spend more time on Henry, just to kill him off anti-climatically. The Film shows us less about Ben, Stanley, and Richie as well; than it does about Henry. Mike and Eddie maybe got a little development? Mike is the outsider, home school kid that doesn't want to kill shit. Eddie is the hypochondriac with a deceptive mother. These are supposed to be main characters...and that's what we got.

As someone who has never read the book (and generally hates about 85% of horror movies / finds them really shitty and poorly-written, relying too much on lame jump scares and body horror) this was something I was not expecting and really enjoyed.

Pennywise has a LOT of character. And he's such a fucking dick about it, too! Like he's visibly just fucking with these kids. And enjoying himself.

And yet, at the same time, he always feels like a puppet on the end of a big long tentacle. Those moments in his dialogue when he just fuckin zones out and his eyes cross and he dribbles, like the codec in his puppet-brain is buffering. Like a malfunctioning Westworld robot or something.

Skarsgaard (sp?) really fucking crushed it.

That's literally about three seconds of footage at the end of a 7-minute dialogue.

And the purpose of that scene isn't even to be scary. It's to establish Pennywise's character. That scene does all the heavy lifting so the next like hour of the movie can focus on scares.

Y'all motherfuckers need to take a class on plot structure lol

That would be great, if they were scary to begin with. But they look so cartoony and cheap, that they weren't scary at all. They pulled the same shit over and over. It's not hard to "see the seams" when it looks so shitty to begin with.

Nice headcanon. That's not how the book or the crap miniseries worked. The monster chomping at Georgie is meant to be scary. You are meant to be disturbed. If the movie failed at that then fuck it. Fact is it's not supposed to be a laughing matter.

>>
>>87506407

To elaborate:

Here are the purposes of that scene, from a story point of view:

- Set up who Georgie is and how he went missing

- Introduce the monster

- Give the viewer enough info to infer the monster's MO (he eats kids, but also he has a degree of sentience and seems to enjoy improv and storytelling and fucking with them a bit first — motherfucker's up in here monologuing about why he likes circus popcorn for fuck's sake)

Most importantly:

- Get the viewer to understand that "Pennywise the Dancing Clown" is not the monster. It's just one aspect of the monster. It's just a kind of Uncanny Valley meat-puppet face that the real monster wears. He's not human, he doesn't seem to understand human emotions really, he appears flummoxed and unnerved by laughter, he drools, his eyes don't work great, he enunciates the wrong parts of words, he moves oddly, etc.

ALL of this is so that the first hour of the film can literally just alternate exposition and scares, without needing to layer in the dread first or introduce the monster, because it did that ahead of time. So when creepy painting lady shows up, you literally already know it's just another shape Pennywise is taking before anyone even says it.

>>
>>87506654

Like yes, it also needs to have a minimum amount of scariness, but it has other primary story-goals before that.

And ffs, it's the first scene of the movie, so the viewer already knows/expects that that kid is as good as dead from the instant he steps on screen, and ESPECIALLY the instant his boat goes down the storm drain. There's just waiting for the death to happen so the movie can proceed. There's not a lot of horror-mileage to be gotten out of a foregone conclusion.
>>
I hate niggers a whole lot but Pennywise taking glee in Bill stomping up the stares made me smile. That's not something the epic novel got across.
>>
>>87506407
The problem with this line of thinking, is that the scene goes by like this.

>Pennywise pops up in the drain
>Starts making small talk to Georgie
>Introduces himself, makes some remarks about the circus
>Mentions popcorn, says "pop pop pop" a few times
>Swift 180 in demeanor
>Never even attempts to go back to chatty, manipulative side again.

All that scene did, was show what could have been. The rest of the film he never even attempts to be personable, or chatty.

It's just like what they did to Freddy in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. They took any sense of personality that we've come to expect from Freddy, and made it devoid of interest into a bland killer.

That's what they did with Pennywise. The Georgie scene tries to build the character, but the film disregards the fun side of Pennywise in favor of shitty horror tropes.

The first encounter with Ben shows it perfectly. Instead of trying to lure Ben into a false sense of security, he just chases him. Bland, boring bullshit.
>>
>>87506731

I spent a lot of time laughing at the scary stuff because it's got a certain amount of dark humor to it, honestly? Like when Pennywise pops up behind the fat kid and goes "HAY EGG BOY", that was scary, but it was also pretty damn funny. I liked that he was this Lovecraftian hell-monster but he's also just kind of an asshole.

Idk, I think I just like a monster that knowingly and unironically goes BOO and seems to be having a good time.

You're right, except for this sentence. All that scene did was show how well done that scene was in the fucking 27 year old made for TV movie.
>>
>>87506813

The fun side of Pennywise IS the horror stuff. All of that is an aspect of his character. You have to think of him like an orchestra conductor, or a game designer even.

When a light clicks on in a room to lure one of the characters in, and then a door shuts behind them — that's not just spooky stuff randomly happening. It's the maestro Pennywise gleefully bouncing around behind the scenes.

And I still thought he was pretty damn fun. That scene in the kitchen where Bill is like "You're not real?" and Pennywise reacts with amused surprise got an uncomfortable scare-laugh out of the audience. Pennywise being like"LOL what the fuck did you say to me dude? This isn't REAL enough for you? Are you really sure you want to step to me champ? Cuz if you want me to up the game, I can up the game, but holy shit, y'all 80's kids don't scare easy, jesus."

Right before the kids called his bluff and kicked his ass and sent him crawling down the well.

It wasn't scary. It wasn't the stuff of horror. Pennywise never felt intimidating throughout the film. Whereas, in the miniseries; he commands the screen when he's on it. It didn't need a jumpscare. Tim Curry's presence in the frame was enough. That's a stark comparison to how useless this Pennywise felt.

I'm not saying he should be like that every time. I'm just saying that in that scene specifically, he shows a dynamic personality. That he can be more than just the dull, grimacing, spooker that he tried so hard to be. He would've been far more interesting, and commanded more of screen if he wasn't so completely 1-dimensional after that scene.

I like Tim Curry's take on Pennywise, I don't think he was bad or even just mediocre. I think it was quite well done, but he didn't do justice to the character.

He seemed too human to me. And I know it was a made for tv thing, so I can't fault it too bad, but this new Pennywise is almost fucking demonic. I love what they have done with IT, obvious Big Hollywood pressure aside for the shitty jumpscare bits. Bill put his heart into the role and I commend him for that.

It only wakes up to feed, and frightening victims is like "salting the meat" as it put it so it torments them before finishing the job. Adults' fears are far more abstract like crippling debt and not leaving behind a legacy which makes them far harder to scare, while children are afraid of simple and tangible stuff like movie monsters (or a leper, in the case of a hypochondriac), so it prefers to prey on them with simple parlor tricks like shapeshifting. The clown I guess is ideally a good disguise that allows it to get close to them without initially arousing suspicion, but it was never emphasized THAT much and the remake shows the least care for it so far.
>>
So, here's the original sewer scene from the miniseries:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUPq6X-Y1Kg

I'm really not sure how anyone can watch this and think that it's good? It's completely tone deaf. The kid actor is terrible (totally cheerful and dumb as hell the whole time). The pacing is crap, the lighting is awful, and even fuckin Tim Curry misses the mark for most of the scene (because of bad direction, not lack of skill).

It might have been great for its time, but by any conceivable modern standard, this is a really poorly executed scene. I've seen youtube shorts that are done better.

>>
>>87507162
Do remember that Pennywise states that "I'll drive you crazy! I'll kill you all". The scene was meant to show that he still had control over them. And that it took so much effort to try and ignore him still after all those years. Which is why Pennywise was laughing about it. He still had control. He didn't need to be scary in that scene, the damage was done at the first sign of struggle.
>>87507208
I'm not heralding shit. I'm comparing what I believe to be a better portrayal of a character, to what I would consider a worse portrayal.

But you're bias must be huge if you think every scene was comedy save 1. Because if we're going by some bullshit margin, that 1 scene from the miniseries trumps the zero scenes this Pennywise had to feel threatening.
