I can't get over how drab and ugly the limited series looked. Especially compared to the original show. It worked (kind of) for Inland Empire but not for Twin Peaks.

I'm honestly not one. I have some issues with season 3, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's shit because it's simply not.

This as a little dissapointing though, I just really enjoy the visual symbolism. Was there anything Owl related in the Return? I don't remember right now.

Original series: Amazing, but is slightly damaged when the network heads force Lynch to turn off the pleb filters.
The Return: Max kino, filters on full gear.
>>
original series: boring soap opera by mark frost but Lynch does some interesting tonal stuff and puts in a good scene or two in every episode while hes actually working on it

the return: fantastic surreal journey with occasional shit bits where Lynch let Frost write something non-humorous
>>
>>87418041
That's probably intentional, given that the lodge spirits travel through electricity and s3 was stuffed with high tech wizardry (quite literally in bad cooper's case). The naturalist evil ain't the problem anymore
>>
>>87418015
Dougie!Coop sees an owl fly over his house when he first arrives. Later in that same episode and when he electrocutes himself in Part 15, we see an owl cookie jar in the Jones's kitchen. All very minor shots that could've been shot late in production after someone said to David and Mark
>Hey what about all that owl stuff?
because they were too lazy to rewatch the original series.

hey here's something kind of groundbreaking:
they're both good for very different reasons

Overall the original series is better but the return managed to evoke a sense of horror and uneasiness with its finale that no other show has managed. Been thinking about that last scene for days.
>>
>>87420843
Why?
>>
>>87418015
>Was there anything Owl related in the Return? I don't remember right now.
The limo driver is spooked by an owl in front of Dougie's house.
>>
>>87420084
To be fair it wasn't a flash animation (exploison, frog)
>>
>>87420878
Honestly not articulate enough to be able to explain shy but it just did. Just the way everything felt subtly off the entire last episode. The moment when she screamed and the lights went off I found terrifying.
>>
>>87420916
Point is: it looks awful, like the general aesthetic of the return, it just looks cheap as hell, awful digital effects (the dead bodies, the lodge effects, bob's head, jesus christ) combined with awful practical effects (the office assassination) combined with awful artistic design that feels soulless and empty, weird for no other reason than being weird, the character assassination of the lodge spirits/mythos, i can go on and on and on.
>>
>>87421088
Please do. This show lacks reviews.
>>
>>87420084
How did any of episode 8 look like a flash animation you mong. If you're referring to the red room scenes where the tulpas were returned, those effects were obviously the way they were on purpose. You could make much better effects these days with after effects so lynch was obviously going for a certain aesthetic.
>>
>>87421210
Do you even question if it was a good idea to "for a certain aesthetic"? Do you even question any of Lynch's decisions?
>>
>>87421288
I'm so fucking bored of everything that anything new or slightly different is novel to me at this point. GoT had decent special effects but it was all so obvious that I just wanted to kms while watching.

Original series: Quirky show with original ideas, implemented through parody that went through most people's heads, but was easy enough to follow thanks to the main plot centering around a very basic murder mystery plot.
The Return: A challenging art house movie as an 18 hour long TV show that's not accessible for everybody because there's no easy to follow and understand main plot moving the story forward in each episode.
>>
Honestly the return felt like it served to show the passage of time, more than anything. It gave us random snippets into the world, subtle humour and parody of the original show, and the ending showed how obsession ruins lives.

Anyone whinging about the thin plot or the "dream" explanation is missing the point.

The promotions they did for stuff like TV guide were stupid as fuck, they made it look like it was going to be some dumb soap opera romance trash with older actors.

The promo videos were spot on though. They show random, brief snapshots into a world that has obviously changed, and the occasional glimpse of something harsh and surreal. They reflected the tone of the show perfectly.

This is so off base. Maybe YOU only like it for the visuals. Plenty of other people like it for the characters as well, for example. The strength of the writing of Twin Peaks has always been one of its main components, even if there are plenty of moments that don't live up to its lofty heights.

It's like people forget that some of the best dialog in the original+Return were Frost creations. Major Briggs' vision, a monologue everyone reposts in that general, was completely written by Frost, but shot/staged by Lynch. Can you imagine that scene being as powerful if were not shot/edited in such a way? Or if instead of that flowery description of Briggs and his son, we had a more Lynchian mumble-non-sequitir dialog?

The best of Twin Peaks is always when you have both wildly different personalities and styles mixing and complementing each other, like Hastings' tearful confession in the prison, or the scenes with the Mitchum brothers.

The Frost hate of the show is the most hipster fucking thing on this board, like what college kids do to signal they have "taste" when they really don't know what they're talking about.

This doesn't mean you have to like every contribution. I think S2 is perfect evidence that Frost by himself can make for some lame material, just like Lynch by himself tends to fall on his more indulgent subjects (like people standing around awkwardly doing nothing). But both of them together ARE Twin Peaks, and no amount of shitposting is going to convince me otherwise.
