people who go into stand up are mad man. to actually put yourself in front of a crowd, usually no training or anything, and take the punt that you can make these people laugh is excruciatingly difficult.

hopefully it'll help that the audience are a bit loose, and in the mood to laugh. but at the starting stage it must be fucking torture when a joke falls flat.

Exactly. That's a huge part of why WILTY is so brilliant, the Mitchell/Mack dynamic. Alan Davies and Bill Bailey on QI together is also always good value.

What I don't like about the BBC is how they react to certain "scandals". Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand losing their jobs/contracts for a stupid prank call. Clarkson being fired for hitting a crew member (shitty thing to do of course but still) was a stupid call as well. The BBC basically destroyed one, if not their most popular international shows because of that. I wasn't even massively into Top Gear but I know roughly a billion people worldwide loved it, and now it's gone to shit.

His tenure as Director of Entertainment did catastrophic damage to the BBC in general that it still hasn't recovered from, and probably won't, since he did it during a time when the Director General's position was incredibly unstable and he had more power than he should have.

The real problem was publicly announcing the "at least one woman" rule and the diversity rule. They thought they were doing good by announcing it, fishing for brownie points for being all progressive.
What they should've done was just keep quiet and enforce those rules anyway. A lot less people would've noticed the changes outright.
