Is this guy the most overrated director in the game? His plans never work, his list of failed projects is huge, he stopped working on The Hobbit to 'take other projects' but has a 5 year gap between movies. This guy is a massive hack and yet gets praised. I don't understand it.
>>87350371
He's a literal autist.
And he's not overrated. When everything lines up with is autism the end result is usually pure kino. People have never been afraid to call out his stinkers out though.
>>87350371
The ultimate hack, only second to Ridley Scott. Not sure how this fat spic is still getting funding for his shit flicks.
>inb4 muh Pan's Shitshow
To this day, i've yet to see a more overrated piece of shit.
>>87350371
I'm still fucking pissed about him dropping the live action Monster adaptation.
>>87350766
Its okay he will adapt true anime kino
>>87350766
The dude's the quintessential ball dropper. I still can't believe he lied about being swamped with projects and stepping down from The Hobbit.
Just look at this list and laugh.
I really don't care that the guy would rather drop a movie than compromise the quality. /tv/ shits on quipshit and franchise shit and executive meddling shared universe shit and this one guy who doesn't engage in it is getting shit on too for not letting execs fuck with his movies?
At the Mountains of Madness didn't happen because the studio wouldn't let he and Cruise have an R rating so he dropped the movie instead of make a watered down version. He put years of his life into the Hobbit and moved his family to New Zealand only to be forced out by execs who were using him to stall a while until PJ finished suing them. He busted his as for years to get Hellboy 3 made and the studio wouldn't put up the money and Mignola stabbed him in the back and rebooted instead.
His Fishman Fucking movie is apparently his best since Pan's Labyrinth and it's already getting Oscar talk so good for him.

When the camera pans out and shows the huge set it always gives me a sad feeling.
>>87350371
>he stopped working on The Hobbit
seems like a smart guy to me
>>87351566
He didn't do shit between 2008 and 2013.

Is that German being hit by coke can?
>>87350371
Yep. Garbage tier
>>87351536
It's almost like you were supposed to!
>>87350371
If this kino doesn't happen I'll be so disappointed
>>87351200
Jesus man, why can't he be like all the other lazy geniuses and not pretend to be working. At least then I won't get disappointed.
>>87351200
>>87351566
But he got kicked off of the Hobbit. The studios never intended him to make it, they just needed someone to go into production while Peter Jackson's lawsuit against New Line got settled.

Just read this Wikipedia page and you'll realize that this guy has reverse Mida's touch.

His new movie The Shape of Water getting praises.
His new upcoming film The Shape of Water seems decent and is already a critic favorite, 100% on RT so far.

He was working on the Sneed's Feed and Seed joke.
>>87351923
Any sources on that?
He's good at production design
That's literally it
If you stripped the look of the creatures and sets from his movies you'd have a television-tier director with mediocre composition, editing, pacing and writing
>>87352069
Totally agree with you. I don't understand why he got into the direction business, he should focus on being a producer and work with set design.
>>87350371
list your body of work, sir.
Are you anons not aware that his new movie is getting unanimous critical praise and he's dedicating the rest of the year to his Oscar campaign?
>>87350766
Fuuck, he dropped it?
I just tought it was on hold. I was hyped since he said tgat he even met with Urasawa and got his aporoval of whole first season, which Urasawa read.
>>87352186
It doesn't really matter. He will never be redeemed.
I'm very angry he's politicising his new film. It looks very well-made but I can't bring myself to put aside my differences and enjoy it knowing its political message. Really sad that he can't divorce his personal opinions from shit
>>87350371
So who was in the wrong here with Hellboy 3, studios or Del Toro?
>>87352275
Uh huh
>>87352275
Unfortunately everything now days has to be political. Everything has to be a focal point for someone to express their ill thought out opinion on something ultimately trivial that no one will care about in a few years. It's not even like creators are evaluating broad philosophical concepts, it's always surface level shit such as 'women are people too' and 'racism is bad m'kay'. I want something thought provoking, not just a film maker preaching to the choir to get good reviews.
>>87352323
Studios
>>87350371
I think the ideal del Toro is to fail them when they're functionally complete but right before he fucks them up for himself.
Pan's and Hellboy 2 are so great that nothing else matters.

I think he was more concern with getting that Pinocchio movie made. He is still looking for money to make it.
>>87351200
Well he was swamped with projects, they just all got cancelled or he quit them.
>>87352503
BvS doesn't pull any punches. It points out the shortcomings of all parties: the East, the West, the media, the elite, no one is presented as entirely blameless.
Some half-smart critics are starting to open their eyes to the allusions Armond White was obliquely referencing a month after it released. Predictably, they're still blind to what it had to say about the media and click-bait journalism.

>must be a contrarian!
There's a lot of shitty, inaccurate reporting around projects he's done. Just look at last month when Deadline reported he was gonna shoot Fantastic Voyage in January and it wasn't even greenlit yet.
>>87355834
>he didn't like my shitty hyper-commercialized franchise movie
but he loves these. thats the whole gimmick
