IIRC part of that whole miniseries (unless I'm mixing it up with another one?) is that the Doctors see various points at which each of them could have gone down a dark path. 11's involves staying in the TWORS bubble reality, I think 12's might have been kicking out Clara in S8? I don't entirely remember.

SCP Anon here, real quick, I just want to say that I cannot describe my absolute joy and surprise when bumping into 6062 and Five Items, holy shit.

I just want to thank Immigrant, catharticspurious and whoever was responsible for Five Items for taking my simple little sad story badly written in one afternoon and taking it to a whole new level.
Special props to cathartic for writing an actual SCP entry, with terminology and formatting and everything, something that I tried to do in Solitude but gave up halfway through and took the lazy route.
Seriously, I'm giddy right now. Thank you all.

Also, was the cypher in Five Items an already existing one? Because I translated it all by hand :p

SHIT TRIPS 2 EARLY REVIEW-

For those of you who like Hell Bent, it's 10/10. Tbh its really comfy. And dumb. And comfy.

For those of you who don't like Hell Bent, you should get some taste.
>>
>>87316528
I honestly can't remember a lot about the story, except that it had Voords in it.
I remember the art getting steadily worse and worse as the comic progressed.
>>
>>87316929

>>87316921
You mean the Dalek Empire audios? Or just audios with Daleks in general? Cause i m o the best Dalek story of all Doctor Who is an audio

Also are there any other Dalek audios that are worth getting?
>>
>>87317032
The Short Trips: Dalek Empire anthology, which had stories somewhat based on the Dalek audios, actually made the Daleks scary again.
>>
>>87317666
I don't mean this as an attack but as a genuine question, but how can an audio make the Daleks scary again?
No offence to the realm of audio media, but for me the best scary Dalek scenes have been the visuals
>>
>>87317647
>Also are there any other Dalek audios that are worth getting?
Jubilee!!!

Haven't heard Empire myself, but heard good things
>>
>>87317842
Jubilee is what was adapted to become 'Dalek', right?
Which is better?
>>
The Parting of the Crisps might go over a few people's heads but that's why I love it. Well done neo, the ending nearly killed me.
>>
>>87317910
Jubilee, 0 question. Dalek is a good monster story. Jubilee is a masterpiece, one of the best Who stories there is.
>>
>>87317826
I think the Daleks are always scarier as an idea, like a mobile manifestation of death, than they are physically. The TV show has gotten lucky a few times and managed to make them visually imposing despite their silliness, but I think you can make them just as much of a threat in a book or an audio if you write them the right way.
>>
>>87317991
fantastic, i'll check it out, thanks
any other good Dalek audios?
and just out of interest, do any Dalek episodes actually come across as scary to anyone? I remember as a kid being terrified by Dalek when it first aired (the scene with the people being slaughtered in the rain) and also the scene in Resurrection with the gas, still gets me even to this day.
But are any Dalek episodes 'scary'?
>>
>>87317910
Jubilee is easily better, it's not really a fair competition when it has a much broader canvas of 2 hours and is able to work with more themes plus a unique setting. (Also Evelyn is a better character than Rose but that goes without saying.)
>>
Doctor Who is dead.
>>
>>87318129
You make a very good point.
My dream is a Doctor-less Dalek Empire style mini series that demonstrates on-screen the 'power of the daleks' that has never been truly shown on-screen aside from I guess the short scene of the Fall of Arcadia in the 50th
>>
>>87318103
Parting of the Ways, for the sheer brutality of it I suppose. For kids especially, I know my kids refuse to watch it past the part where the woman dies in the corridor.
>>
>>87317910
They're both brilliant on their own merits, I honestly wouldn't know which one to pick. Jubilee is perfect for audio, Dalek is perfect for TV.
>>
>>87318103
Despite it being a fakeout, the bit in Magician's Apprentice where they're all just sitting silently waiting for Clara to run was probably the most intense Dalek scene in a long while.
>>
>>87317970
Very glad you enjoyed it! I've watched/read those interviews enough the details had drilled deep into my mind.

>>87318103
>any other good Dalek audios?
There are a lot that are kinda arc-heavy, I might get back to you later today after looking through my audios
>>
>>87318529
I agree, I liked the fact that Magician's Apprentice showed a more animalistic and brutal side to the Daleks. Despite being lectured by Missy on how it would be a tactical advantage to keep her alive, they disregard all that and fire on her anyway. Davros' description of whats going on makes it too.
>>
>>87318779
I'm not sure if I read it somewhere, or it was said in an episode. But somewhere, I recall that it's been said that a Dalek's weapons in engineered to, in the final moments, cause the maximum amount of pain to the enemy, right before death. For no other reason, than pure spite.

That is the difference between Cybermen and the Daleks. The Cybermen are the threat of unrelenting effeciency without true empathy or consent. The Daleks are the threat of unrelenting hate.
>>
>>87319082
I remember that. You are referring to the Tenth Doctor novel 'Prisoner of the Daleks', in which the Daleks exterminate the potential 'companion' in the first act of the book, and the Doctor laments that she took longer than normal to die at the hands of the Dalek due to that alteration to their weapons.

Into the Dalek came close but realistically the only way the Daleks are ever gonna be scary again is if an episode set in the future ends with the Daleks arriving at whatever planet/colony/space station the story is taking place on and just destroys everything while the Doctor runs away. Scenes of people being gunned down by the Daleks never happen, despite that being their forte

The Daleks have been handled badly. They need to be left out of Nuwho for a while and then come back in a big way, a shock reveal that turns the end of an episode on its head. Imagine a story where the Doctor saves a random planet from a random monster and everything turns out ok, only for the shadow of a Dalek saucer to appear and within minutes the planet is lost. That is what Terry Nation first envisaged with his Dalek War, but the budget did not allow for it so we ended up with Planet of the Daleks. We need the Daleks to demonstrate their menace, both to the universe within Doctor Who but also to the audience in general. We need a scene that we can show to non-Who fans and say 'Look at this. This is what the Daleks are and this is what they do.' that makes them seem scary, threatening and tragic at the same time. So far, the episode 'Dalek' is the closest nuwho has come to this, with Parting of the Ways and perhaps Into the Dalek in second. give me any other examples of the Daleks doing what they do best in Nuwho.

Just had an idea for a story for shit trips 3, but i think it would be too long for a short story compilation:

the was master has gathered all the doctor's enemies that arent allied with the daleks to form a coalition to win the time war.

Suddenly time lords are shot up by dalek weaponry.chaos ensues and everyone gets paranoid and carves up the planet into home bases. In paranoia everyone is at an unofficial
Armistice. All except one lone group of 30 humans who was invited to represent the 3rd great human empire.

As the group aims to get back home through the hordes of foes, the mysterious eighth doctor aims to guide them home through the zones and armies to a space port. But when the humans are blamed, every army seems poised to hunt them down as they pass. Worse still when the doctor leaves promising to return, and an old man in an old leather coat shows up claiming to be the one to fulfill the promise.

Itd be like anabasis meets doctor who, but i think itd be really really long
>>
>>87321147
You could get away with it if you divided it into shorter episodes, there's a very long one in ST2 that does this.
>>
>>87321147
if you compress it down to just key scenes u could fit it in, catharcticsuprious and neocloister have some pretty complicated fics they made work like that
>>
>>87320836
BBC has to have them show up once a season though or they lose the rights
>>

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. The Daleks have shown up once a season in NuWho as far as I'm aware, even if in a brief cameo appearance. Why else would the Beeb keep trotting them out when they've shelved the Cibbermen for long periods before
>>
>>87315943
Yeah, but would you a Bird Peri?
>>
>>87321980
Because they're good trailer bait.
>>
>>87321980
That's conspiracy type thinking. The showrunners have flat out denied it, and the Daleks are hugely popular enemies they have a tonne of easy props for, and a reliable actor for.
>>
>>87321980
The version of this urban legend I find myself believing is that they have to show up on TV once a year, rather than strictly per season.

It seems too much of a coincidence that even in a year when the show was literally off the air, the sodding Daleks still aired in new televised material.

>>87322721
I've always seen it as the time vortex can't be easily returned once its been absorbed - its not holding it in your head that kills you, its losing that power that does the damage. The Doctor transfers the power to himself and then erases Rose's memory of the incident, thereby negating the effect. He is then left with the task of returning the power to the TARDIS, and it is that act that causes him to regenerate. That's just my interpretation though.

>>
>>87322529
Maybe releasing the energy killed him? Maybe it's like hot potato and it was just warming up and the Doctor takes it out only to have it explode when he had it. How exactly did he absorb it from Rose? He kissed her, but maybe to extract it he needed to start the regeneration process. Did it ever specify that Rose actually absorbed it? Maybe she didn't absorb it all yet, just kind of had it floating about in there and the Doctor took it all out before she went full TV.

Probably similarly to what they were doing in Revelation of the Daleks. The logicality of turning humans into Daleks is up for debate, but there's enough of an established precedent that it doesn't demand skepticism.

I thought the point of Revelation though was that the standard Daleks found the idea of Davros turning humans into Daleks totally abhorrent
The only examples of Human-to-Dalek transition is Evolution of the Daleks and Parting of the Ways, both instances where the Daleks were truly insane and/or too desperate to care. Why would Daleks in the Asylum even bother with that anyway? Surely they are too far gone to care?

I don't really like Charley at all and Zagreus/Scherzo seem to suggest they're heading in a more abstract direction with the stories which I don't really like

They pretty much are, I believe. You can theoretically listen to one without the other, but stuff like Dark Eyes requires the context of the end of the EDAs, iirc.

>>87327302
I don't think the other stories are quite as abstract, though I admit I haven't listened to them all myself just yet.

The EDAs and later are deliberately separate from the earlier 8 stories. And yeah you might want to do that, your prediction is correct and Charley is a huge part of 8's main range stories

Ill be honest with you anon, the majority of the divergent universe is experimental as fuck and love it or hate it. I maybe like 3 or 4 stories out of it. But after the next life they go back to the main universe and hit kino after kino. There's maybe 2 stories in the range from terror firma-the girl who never was that are actively bad. The rest are fantastic.

I assume this is in response to the Gareth stuff? Yeah, people will forget about all this shit pretty quick, but the BBC still wouldn't risk having that sort of controversy. Why hire a writer that so many people hate and has that sort of history (easily accessible with a quick google) over new, more talented writers? It's not as though his episodes were particularly spectacular or anything.

Either that, or it's about the shitty lens effects in RTD's era, in which case... I mean, well. yeah.
>>
>>87333593
I like all of his episodes desu
>>
>>87333799
I do too, actually. They're really comfy... but they're not exactly the absolute best the show has to offer, and they're not new and unique concepts in general, so as much as I liked his episodes, never having him write for the show ever again is no big loss.

Besides, some of Chibnall's episodes (like The Power of Three) channelled that sort of comfy, so I'm sure we'll get similar going forward.
>>
>>87333932
The Hungry Earth (and whatever the second part is called) were very comfy, but the only episode by Chibbers that I would say is good would be Power of Three imo. Haven't seen his non-Who work though so I can't really say for certain, but I'm still very nervous about his run
>>
>>87333593
Yeah, it is about that. And considering Gareth hasn't done anything for the Beeb in three years, they've probably already cut him off and he's just exacerbating it.

The only thing I've got to say about the lens effect thing is...you never know what's going to look like shit in a few years time. It's best to recognize that most television is made with the technology and audience existing at the time in mind.

The Power of Three falls apart a little in the latter part of the story for me, but it's still a hugely enjoyable episode. None of Chibnall's episodes are bad, they're just not... amazing. You know? There's nothing that stands out, aside from the general comfy aspect to them. That's fine, of course, but I'm curious - and nervous - to see if he'll be able to deliver with the big finales and stuff.

>>87334041
Mhm, I didn't think we were going to see much of him ever again but this stuff just seals the deal.

And as for the lens effect, yeah, I know. It seemed good at the time, but it just didn't age well. Hindsight is a powerful thing, though - like you say, you never know what'll it look like in time to come, so I certainly don't blame the crew for the stylistic choices made.

Very true, so I can't fault Chibnall too much for that. The comfy of the rest of the ep (and the kino conversation that 11 has with Amy) are more than enough to make up for everything else. And even then, the conclusion wasn't that bad.

Not that he isn't popular, but his avid fanbase is probably a whole lot smaller than any of the others, so all his fan interactions seem a whole lot comfier (specifically, at cons) than with any of the popular Doctors like Smith or Tennant.

But, of course, Colin's also standing next to him and nobody seems to give much of a shit about him either, but to be fair, his Doctor does have a certain reputation that probably makes him a bit more unpopular than the rest. which is a shame because sixie is great when given good material

I'd be losing my fucking mind if McGann walked into the room so casually like that.

Idk McGann does have his fair share of fans who freak out lol. He is pretty popular at cons and a lot more relaxed and sociable than you'd expect. He even takes groups of fans out for dinner.

McGann and Eccleston have known eachother for yeaaaars. McGann's career might have stagnated but he was at the forefront of his generation and remains well-networked.

21 August: Capaldi says he's open to returning to the show in future (like anniversaries)

http://metro.co.uk/2017/08/21/doctor-whos-peter-capaldi-says-hes-open-to-returning-to-the-show-if-it-was-the-right-time-6868057/

>‘I love Doctor Who, so it’s great to be in it. But I think there comes a time… when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go, and leave it behind and let it get on with itself.

>‘Maybe in some years’ time, I could pop up again. I’m quite happy to do that.’

>‘One doesn’t want to… it should never be a casual thing. It has to be special. That’s one of the things I love about Doctor Who – when it connects with its past, which it has an increasing amount of. When it touches its own past, it’s an electric moment. But if we all keep showing every season, it’s not!'

4th September: Capaldi is much more hesitant on the idea.

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2017-09-04/peter-capaldi-leaves-doctor-who-could-he-return/

>'I think when you should go, you should go. Even when I was a kid I believed [the Doctor] was this weird and wonderful thing, so if he kept showing up all the time in Big Finish or in multi Doctor stories he was more available.'

>'I don’t know. Maybe. But not for a while.'

Both times he points out that overdoing returns dulls the effect and magic of the show, but he seems much more generally down on the idea in the second interview (even specifically pointing out returning to Big Finish as not necessarily a positive thing). I imagine he likes the mystique around the first 3 Doctors more than the much greater 'presence' of some of the later ones.

My impression is that I think he would be open to anniversaries like the 60th if the script was very good, but he might honestly turn it down if he doesn't feel the story was great or served 12's character well. I don't see him particularly open to Big Finish. I don't think he'll do them. I don't think he'll even really consider it for a proper long while.

>>
>>87347216
sad but i see his point of view and honestly, id rather he didnt do big finish if he would just be getting standard fitton and briggs scripts, i'd rather keep the magic of him confined to his great era on TV yeah. its weird for me to argue this cause i normally love doctors going to BF but i actually get his POV cause his era is kinda different in how connected and focused his character was

Yeah, totally, there's no real spot they could jam a whole new characterisation journey for him, he flows on too too much between S8, S9, S10. There are certainly gaps they could add STORIES (misc adventures in S8 and S9, misc post S9 pre Nardole adventures, adventures with River, Nardole adventures, guarding the Vault years, misc S10 adventures, etc.) but there's no real gap they could add a whole new line of characterisation like they could for 6, 7, and 8. They could just do flashy fun audios like they do for 10, but I don't really see him interested in that idea, until perhaps many, many years later when we're onto the 14th Doctor or something and he would consider it just a bit of fun. But I'd be fine if he didn't even do that cause I do pretty much agree with what he's saying in a lot of ways.

There's a wide-open space between Hell Bent and The Husbands of River Song.

I addressed that gap as a space for stories, but I don't think it works as any sort of meaningful space for new characterisation.

What will Doctor Who be like if Murray leaves? Would they be able to find someone else who can create such cohesive themes for the show or will the music become bland and forgettable?

Some of his motifs here http://doctorwhogeneral.wikia.com/wiki/Character_Themes_(Music)

There are plenty of other good composers, and I understand people liking Olafur Arnolds and wanting him to carry over from Broadchurch, but we'd be losing something really, really, really special if Murray left/wasn't brought back and the show lost its focus on consistent musical motifs.
>>
>>87347794
I think there's a ton of room for characterization. For example between hell-bent and the husbands of River Song There Is A distinct growth in the doctors amount of empathy. There is also the little issue of when he starts picking up Venusian Aikido. But for the money, the first thing I would do if I got Peter Capaldi into a studio booth. What did the time Lords feel when their greatest hero showed up left them in chaos and ran off? How do you deal with a society that wants to love someone but physically cannot show it because of who they are? How does the doctor try and teach a society empathy that he is been running from his entire life. And at the end of the day what kind of threat they're still me to Gallifrey with the end of the time War without dragging up Daleks?

Anyone have PDFs of those Black Archive books? They're not in the book MEGA, and I'm a little interested in how these guys can write 20,000 words about a single story.

Also why would you report it?? It's a shit OP but it didn't break any rules and you don't want to cause /who/ related troubles on the board, if you don't want to use it, just let it die. Thread splintering is the thing that annoys the powers that be on /tv/.

My point is that drawing unneeded drama and attention onto /who/ isn't a good idea. Yes it's a terrible OP, but the thread will go on as always. It's not worth causing trouble over. Constantly ongoing generals are tolerated, it's best not to push it with drama like that.

You know that's not what I said. What I said is reporting the OP of a thread that's getting used, with the general going on, is asking for unnecessary trouble.

It's a bad OP. We get those. And we go on. If you try and report every bad OP you will just be fighting an endless battle you can't win, and getting the janitors annoyed by /who/ in the process. Leave it alone and just use the thread as normal. Make the next thread yourself, and give it a good OP, if you want to be a good change for the community.

Slippery slope. I'm not reporting "every bad OP", I'm reporting one of the worst OPs we've ever had that isn't even related to Doctor Who. And no, janitors don't get annoyed at you reporting bad posts once in a while.

>Make the next thread yourself, and give it a good OP
This thread was made at 300 posts. Should I make one at 290 posts to avoid it? Again, that's what led to /got/ being banned.
