Honestly the movie wasn't needed at all.

And the ending of S2 is conceptually the same as the ending to S3.

Dale Cooper, a virtuous man with an inquisitive mind, dabbled with dark forces and paid a terrible price because he's simply out of his league.

Worse yet all the agency has been removed from the character since he's now just following clues left for him by the Fireman and MIKE. On his own he can't do shit.
