The White Walkers BARELY appear in the books so it's difficult to say what they looklike or what their motives are aside from the opening scene of the series (same as in the show). Imagine if in the show, you only saw the Walkers and wights in 3 scenes across 7 seasons, you would forget they even existed. So the showrunners made the Night King the main villain to keep them relevant basically.

Nah dude, the books are going in the opposite direction. The last time a White Walker appeared in the story is when Sam stabbed one north of the Wall, they didn't appear at all in the last 2 books. Obviously Bran and Jon's storylines are leading up to confrontations with them but nobody likes Bran's chapters and Jon's stuff revolves around trying to please Stannis and rote administrative work at the Wall. I don't really blame the show writers on this one
