I don't really think Tolkien's orcs farm. They steal and hunt and gather.

Farming is totally beyond their ability, they are too stupid to even keep slaves to farm for them.

The only way to gather them in such huge concentrations is to dedicate a continent spanning empire to supporting them.

So without food and Sauron's will to help control them, and being in a total panic, a lot of orcs probably killed each other in the ensuing months.
