Sometimes it seems arthouse films are an excuse to be lazy
>point the camera at an animal or nature for minutes
>point the camera at actors doing nothing for minutes
>as little dialogue as possible
>record people doing boring shit or random shit that looks like it has some hidden meaning
>repeat until you have a 3 hour movie
>>
It'll either come off as pretentious or it wont.

I think its all about atmosphere and that kind of thing.

I think that you have to change your whole mindset on films in general.

You are only consuming films, not experiencing them. Films are merely plot points for you that you need to decipher. I would presume you even half watch them on a laptop/computer screen with one earbud on.
Be aware that there is no definitive answer to every frame in most great films, start to think of them as an experience and treat them like that.
Looking for a singular universal "hidden meaning" is a pretty surface-level way of thinking. Movies aren't puzzles which you have to put together in a certain kind of way to "get" them.

Your points are only valid for student films where they think that holding on to a whatever pretty shot for 45 seconds makes the scene good just because of that alone.
Also what's bad about little dialogue if it fit's the narrative?

You assumed too much.
