He's an obscure Chinese director that very few people actually know, aside from Asians. The His Shaolin Soccer fame had run it's course and apparently Kung Fu Hustle just wasn't enough to rekindle it.

I'm not even really sure how Shaolin Soccer exploded the way it did back then. After a few months of it's release suddenly everyone knew about it. And this was before Youtube. I love the movie though.
