I don't remember anything that happens in the first one.

The first one was a TAD too goofy, the dance off etc felt like them being to cynical to be real for a minute. The second one was alot better since there's alot of emotional pay off, they don't just goof around in space.

I can't speak for the comics because I never read them, like the vast majority of people I was first introduced to the guardians through the movies and I'll have to assume that is a throwback to shitty old space shows.
