I never assumed that these two would ever go head-to-head to be honest. They are both intelligent but Varrus didn't seem the type to ever try and outwit others for personal gain like Littlefinger.

As long as Varys has some exposition around LF I won't be as devastated as I am atm but it just creates a handicap where the book will be rated better then it should be just because he won't butcher so many arcs & plot lines.

The point that GRRM decided to introduce Dragons and Magic is when it stopped being a political story.

This was as obvious in the books as in the TV Show, its just that Dany is still in Essos in the books and most of the magic hasnt had a huge impact yet (Lady Stoneheart, Thoros, Melissandre etc.). So you can still enjoy it as a tale of political deception and characters interacting.

Sure, it may be rushed but GRRM would've gotten you to the same place but with tons more pages about food and sex.
