Ridley Scott was surrounded by lots of talented, experienced people during the production of Alien. For example, Dan O'Bannon spent years developing the script and had already worked on similar concepts (Dark Star). I'm sure Ridley helped, but as soon as you take those superstars out of the equation you start to get his more mediocre movies.
