That's not why the episode is scary. The entire episode is a scenario of a guy getting lost in his mind, being tortured by guilt, and becoming a vegetable because of a dumb decision. The VR stuff is just a plot device to explore a scenario where a guy could completely loose touch with reality.

It's basically just a scenario of a guy going insane, which should be easy enough to relate to. That's why people usually get uncomfortable around crazies, they're scared it'll happen to them. One of my worst fears is that I'll lose my mind one day and not be able to see reality anymore. The episode hit me pretty hard. Are you really telling me being stuck in a reality where you're endlessly tortured by your own guilt about your family and not be aware it's all in your head isn't terrifying?

But I think the point "/pol/"? as you say is trying to make is that the reason the episode gets all of its unwarranted praise is because it had a mix lesbian couple in it. If it was a white straight couple then the episode would have flown under the radar just like all the other episodes. The marketing team for the show knew this would happen and thus changed the white straight couple that was originally meant to be in the episode and made it a mix lesbian couple instead. This was meant as a publicity episode. They knew young teen girls and the like would boast it on social media and say that it was the "most beautiful thing they ever saw" for browny points among social groups. You cant deny that this episode was a gebius for free marketing of the show. There were articles about how progressive it was for weeks.
