There is definitely enough dragonglass (obsidian) in the mines to be able to defeat the wights, and considering it kills them dead with one stab, easier than people are killed with steel, those soldiers who are equipped with obsidian should be able to get a high K/D to make up for any limits the amount of dragonglass available imposes. You only have to look at episode 6 to see that working within the logic of the show.

My main point was that so long as the humans maintain a high enough K/D ratio and don't give the NK time to kill off bits of their army in smaller battles, they'll be able to do better.
But I fully expect to see in S7E2 a battle where Jon commands one flank and Jaime the other, and one tries to flank the Night King's forces like would work in a conventional battle, only for the "anvil" in the "hammer and anvil" strategy to get outnumbered as their own deaths add to the wight forces, leading to the flankers to become flanked.
A bit like how World War Z had the unprepared military fight in conventional ways against the zombies and lose utterly. Just in this one at least one of the overall commanders know in detail how the zombies operate.

Another question is whether the WW have cavalry in any significant number...

IDEAS OF ICE AND FIRE IS BLACK? WHAT THE FUCK?

trying to make sense of the political situation of Westeros at the end of the season:

The North: controlled by House Stark again, although the fate of the Dreadfort and the former Bolton bannermen is not clear. Considering that we have heard nothing about a rebellion going on we can assume that there's either a new lord of the Dreadfort loyal to the Starks or the issue of giving the Castle to a new Lord has been put on hold for the time being and it and its linked bannermen are under the direct control of the King in the North for now.
Also, declared to be a part Danys realm now.

The Vale: Ruled by Robin Arryn, either allied or subject to the King in the North (not sure if Royce and his boys participating in proclaiming Jon King means the latter or not).

Riverlands: The Freys are gone and Edmure is god knows where. At the beginning of the season we saw that there's still Lannister armies holed up there, but most of them probably got called to more important fronts when Dany invaded.
Could be a patchwork of peasants/the remaining brotherhood, some independent nobles and Lannister armies holding different areas in the region. Could be completely occupied by Lannister forces. Could be completey anarchy. Who the fuck knows, probably not even the geniuses writing the shows.

Westerlands: Casterly Rock is either still under control of an Unsullied garrison or has been given up by them, but most of the Westerlands seem to be still under Lannister control, going by Jamies conversation with his generals.

Crownlands: Kings Landing is under Lannister control, Dragonstone under Danys control, the rest is unclear. The southern parts are probably under control of Dany, occupied when her army marched through there to ambush the Lannister forces on the way back from the Reach.

Stormlands: Much like the Riverlands and the Crownlands, unclear what happend here. Probably mostly supported both Joffrey and then Tommen after Blackwater Bay, has no reason to support Cersei though.
