Jamie would have brought army over there to fuck em over good out in the open but faster moving Calvary backed by a dragon intercepted them and ruined that plan entirely.

Grey worm gives an order to retreat, Dany laments that her army has lost it's ships and been forced to march across hostile land, vulnerable after the loss of the Tyrell's. Jamie briefly discusses his plans to bring the army to take out grey worms forces once they are starved and tired before the fight that takes that army out.

Add a mere six minutes tops to the season with those scenes and nobody'd have to suss that out. I do wonder if some scene or another was cut that would have offered such an explanation.
