Well we aren't exactly in a time where horror films are known for their quality. They are less creative and tend to be extremely generic. Look at the shit that's become popular.. It Follows... The Babadook... Terrible horror movies that rely on CG blood splatters and other basic effects that look like shit and ruin the suspension of disbelief. Not to mention these directors are past their prime and don't really care about creating new and innovative films anymore.
