I don't really blame the cast I blame the script, it was just really dumb and jumped all over the place at best only paying lip service to the source material

It really was the writing more than anything. I don't know why they felt it necessary to include the love story aspect when the original Kira was narcissistic with a massive god complex. Had it been the original Light he would've slapped the shut out of mia if she had gone behind his back and killed people without him knowing, especially if it had compromised him like that. Also why did they change the rules? The whole page burning rule was added in out of nowhere and they made it so nobody could interact with Ryuk. And what happened to just killing with heart attacks? The anime was able to make heart attack deaths look pretty cool with no problem and the one they showed in the movie was nicely done, but the rest of the killings were just a massive gore fest.
