So what is "The Mist" as in, in universe, what is the phenomena that is the rolling bank of mist / fog that if stepped causes manifestations to brutally end your life in a seemingly meaningful way to you specifically?

Has it ever been explained? Has it ever been said "The mist is X caused by Y that wants Z" Or is it just your typical Stephen King spooky nonsense with his usual response of
