>rewatch Mad Men
>realize Don was about to kill himself in episode 3 of the first season

tip top kino

who was the most unlikable character in the show?
>>
>>86827294
This show is pure art.

>who was the most unlikable character in the show?
Actually I cannot remember a single completely unlikable character. Pete was unlikable in S1 and most parts of S2, but then turned into Don's most loyal fella.
However, while I really liked Joan in the first 5 or so seasons, and thought of her as a strong respectable person, I lost all respect when she decided to rat on Don. Especially given that Don (and Roger) were the only people who really ever watched over her and tried to protect her. Disgusting bitch.
>>
>>86827570
The only unlikable character with no redeeming features is the fat toad Head of the Dealers association guy.
>>
>>86827570
I really disliked Crane for some reason.
>>
>>86827681
Yeah, now that you say it. I always thought he was weird. Kinda soulless. Hitting on Don's ex finally proved that this man also had zero integrity.

During this scene I really hoped he'd go full Patrick Bateman. Just imagine that for a brief moment. American Psycho stretched into eight seasons.
>>
>>86827757
pretty obvious that is the implication at the end of the episode. crane or what's-his-face mentioned a train suicide earlier in the episode or in the previous one as well.
>>
Peggy and Don loved each other. They tricked themselves into thinking that they could never be together because they were just too different but deep down they were both made of a lot of the same stuff, relentless and big players in the industry

Should have acknowledged their feelings instead of repressing them
>>
>>86828009
I agree they loved each other, but I really don't think in a sexual way. They fell in love with each other's mind. I really hate that word, but they were the closest to soulmates I could imagine.
>>
>>86828009
Nah, I think it was more of a mutual respect thing. Don understood what she was going through when she got pregnant and kept that secret for her, and I think she reciprocated by respecting him for who he was despite his faults.
>>
It's a tie between Fat Betty and Late season's Crane

>tfw Crane is the mirror of Campbell
>>
>>86827294
Don "nigger lover" "cheater-cuck" draper was the most unlikable character on the show bar none.
>>
Woah are you me?

I'm willing to make myself sound like a pleb, in full truth I've re-watched Mad Men three times and just yesterday I watched that exact episode and had the same realization.
>>
>>86828225
>t. faggot who missed the entire point of his character
>>
>>86828009
You're thinking of Pete and Peggy, but that worked out fine because Pete still got a wife he in no way deserved.
>>
>>86827294
They were all unlikable. But Don was the worst by far.
>>
>>86828199
>Fat Betty
She wasn't unlikable. She was tragic. I'm a sociopath, but even I felt for her.
>>
>>86828254
t. nigger sympathizer. Niggers and spics should hang from trees. And don draper with them. The only point of his character was to be "lol so progressive lmao". Any other interpretation is trying to make a square peg fit a round hole.

>who was the most unlikable character in the show?

Don

Incorrigible, self-righteous, smug,
false bravado and some false sense of him being a fucking creative genius. YOU COME UP WITH CATCHPHRASES FOR A LIVING

Oh and him nailing the hottest piece of ass there is and then falling for some jewess and some other kike beaks

FUCK THAT WHOLE FUCKING CHARACTER

also lane did nothing wrong
>>
>>86828081
This.
The only successful relationships with women Don ever had were platonic ones (Peggy and Anna)
>>
>>86828296
Let me guess... you're fat, white, have acne, are in your mid-twenties, big fan of suits and supernatural, female, feminazi etc. right?
>>
>>86828117
Maybe in the beginning, but ultimately it goes well beyond that. In The Suitcase Don lets himself be vulnerable and show emotion in front of Peggy that he has never shown to his wives. When Peggy tells Don to "come home" at the end of the series, she is not speaking on behalf of anyone else. Peggy might imagine herself as a Stan kind of girl ie younger and more ~free idealistically, but inside she's like Don.
>>
>>86828009
I think Don was really only capable of loving women with whom he was not in sexual relationships with. Like Peggy, Sally, and Betty once they are divorced.
>>
>>86828331
>false bravado and some false sense of him being a fucking creative genius
Yeah, because being responsible for the single most successful Ad campaign in the history of mankind is something every hobo can do, right?
>>
>>86828355
No, brown, no acne, late teens, I do like the supernatural, but wrong on everything else. What does any of that have to do with the show? I didn't like any of the characters because I have these things called morals and self-respect.
>>
>>86827294
>who was the most unlikable character in the show?
Capitalism.
That's right. Capitalism.
Everyone else was its victim.
>>
>>86828456
How can you not like a single character from the show? Yea, most are shits but they are also complex and grow over the course of the show. Only 1 or 2 are truly horrible.
>>
Anyone who doesn't like Roger is a fag.
>>
>>86828526
I agree. Only one or two of them are really horrible, but that doesn't mean I have to find to find any others likeable. I can understand why some of them made the decisions they did, but that doesn't mean I have to condone them.
>>
>>86828662
I agree, Roger is GOAT
>>
I hate the season 7 finale
>>
>>86828662
One of the worst on the show. Anyone who does like him is only because they are an narcissist like him.
>>
>>86828502
Lane would've been alive if it weren't for capitalism.

You are now aware that for all his faults, Roger was actually an excellent father while Don was a terrible one who was actually willing to abandon his children to run off with that Jewish woman, who had to guilt him into not abandoning his family. He also frequently neglected and ignored them. Roger always supported his daughter no matter how shitty she was and actually listened to her and did what was best for her, including taking care of the child she abandoned.

Roger's daughter and Don should have gotten together, they deserved each other.

I had a largely Mad Men inspired dream last night.

First I remembered that bit where Don was listening to David Bowie on the radio and it gave me an in-dream revelation that I've either forgotten or one that makes no sense to me now, something like that was the exact moment where Don started liking the style and aesthetic and tone of the new decade, or something? As if Don had some sort of chauvinistic appreciation for the 50's/60's? It was somehow meaningful at the time and struck me even when I woke up but now it doesn't make sense..

And the other bit was something like Roger in a police station and I'm not sure what the context was, but he confused "burqa" with "balaclava" and he either put the balaclava on or brought it out of the bag he was carrying it in, and for some reason all the police officers there drew their guns on him as if he surprised them, as if he was holding a bomb.
It was funny but that's all I can describe it as.

I stayed up until 7am playing HOI4, that sort of thing always gives me intense dreams. First time it's ever been largely Mad Men themed though.

I rewatch Mad Men every year and I always notice new things, it's seriously top tier art all around. Betty is a pretty unlikable bitch granted it wasn't all her fault she grew up to be a spoiled child.

Don forcing Lane out just makes me hate him. He didn't have a choice, but just the way he went about it gets me. Obviously he doesn't have a clue as to the extent of his situation, he just doesn't really listen.

They need to make a Mad Men film. I know Coca-Cola is trying to get Matthew Weiner to write one about how Don pitches the Mean Joe Greene advertising campaign. It would take place over 8 years after the events of the series finale.

BTW, here's the commercial in question. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xffOCZYX6F8

I'm only 4 episodes in, I'm not sure if I'm a dumbass but every 'business' scene I get confused. They walk in and start talking with a client but I have no idea who they are or what they want or what anyone's job description is.

Other than that it's great though.

I liked him in both those seasons

This, her unending hatred of Don made no sense when even Pete had forgiven him for fucking up.

>who was the most unlikable character in the show?

Peggy
>>
>>86847517
I couldn't disagree more.

Don wasn't a bad person or a "colossal fuck up". I agree, he had zero tolerance for showboats (S1 Pete, Crane etc.) and tended to stonewall them. He also had issues with non-platonic relationships with women. He grew up in a whorehouse, is he really to blame for that? He just didn't understand love. Maybe he was even right in saying, love was created by ad men.

However, he valued loyalty a lot. Again, he grew up in a whorehouse, abandoned by his parents. He was a completely different person towards people who didn't betray him and thus triggered his lifelong fears of being left and shit at. For example, Roger, late Pete, Freddy, Peggy, Joan (until she betrayed him), Ken, Sal (even after watching him have gaysex, he still respected him and protected his secret).

Also, in platonic relationships with women, he was also very caring and protective. Joan, Peggy, Sally, Betty after the divorce, Anna, Anna's niece etc. He even would have gone without millions of dollars, just for Joanie not to become a whore. She decided to do it anyway. She also decided to backstab Don. No, he didn't deserve that, Joancuck.

So in the end, Don was only a "colossal fuck up", when his Dick was involved. Either the one in his pants or the one from his past.

She fucked the guy for the good of the company and Don destroyed the account like he usually did just because he's broken inside and and horribly selfish.

I liked Crane. Not in the same way as the rest of them but as a comic relief. In every company there seems to be someone completely incompetent and unpleasant yet is somehow above everybody. I thought it was fun to see how that person got to that position.

Also that episode where Kinsey was a hare krishna Harry showed some character. He was selfish and weak but still tried to do the right thing.

She wasn't really his girlfriend and he was being used by the krishnas. Perhaps he couldn't make it in Hollywood but he didn't have much in New York either. Crane was weak and pathetic but he didn't try to fuck Kinsey over, he tried to do the right thing.

Okay I haven't gotten through the whole thing yet but this thread is plagued by a few negative motherfuckers yelling at themselves and arrogantly vetoing any effort at improvement or recognition of the human condition. Wait what?

Can I get a quick summary of the episode?
>>
>>86852855
Crane brought them into television. He created and ran everything television in the company, and came to Roger with the idea when no one else had thought of it. The joke is that he ran a vital part of the company perfectly but he was an antisocial and unpleasant punk so nobody liked him enough to listen to him or invite him to meetings.
>>
>>86856471
In the particular scene OP was talking about Don is supposed to leave work and go home, but he instead goes on top of the building's roof.

He looks across the cityscape, leaves his suitcase leaned against a ventilation cube and then approaches the edge and looks down at the street, men running about below seeming like ants to him.
After creeping ever closer to the abyss we see him, squinting his eyes to suppress tears, swallow emotionally and finally avert his gaze towards the setting sun.
Change of camera angle, we now see Don's face lit by orange light. To himself, he mumbles "Damn... I truly am a Mad Man"

After that we cut to black and get the episode's credits accompanies by cheery music
>>
>>86827294
Most unlikeable was Don or Betty dealer, they were both assholes and empty shells of human beings, though some people come close like early Pete or that TV add guy
>>
Crane was a living meme because he was socially awkward and meek, but arguably one of the best ad men at the company
People just constantly shat on him for "no reason" (they don't like him which makes them think he does nothing) which ended up being funny but also tragicish
Him getting fucked out of the partnership was bullshit, he seriously should have gotten it but still managed to get bullied
>>
>reunion movie
>Don has just gotten the Coca-Cola ad approved. He's never been this successful.
>Don stands by the window and looks out on Madison Avenue.
>He hears sweet oblivion calling him.
>Don leans out and plunges downward.
>As Don's limbs trail behind him, scenes from the past flash by.
>Miraculously Don lands on a big orange couch that had bee conveniently left on the curb.
>Don lights a cigarette and takes a drag.
>A bystander watching says, "Boy, that guy's really a Mad Man!"
