Keep in mind The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine were both on at the same time at one point. After the TNG season 6 two-part episode "Chain of Command" DS9 starts and runs alongside TNG for a while.
I personally watch them in an order by stardate, but you're fine just alternating DS9 - TNG - DS9 until you run out of TNG there.

I don't get this obsession with prequels and alternate timelines and fucking around constantly. What made TNG work as a continuation was moving the story FORWARD. DS9 worked by narrowing the focus, VOY worked (eh.. sort of) by shifting focus sideways into uncharted parts of the galaxy.

How fucking hard is it to move the storyline forward? How about the first spaceship to begin charting a new galaxy? "Final frontier" yet again. You can drop references to the state of the home galaxy but you aren't tied to that backstory either.

No it didn't, because they'd be too hamstrung by legacy to be able to tell stories freely.. which is exactly what happened. Hence why they began a bunch of timeline fuckery stories that could literally be reset buttoned out of canon.

I'll agree it's fertile ground for storytelling, but it's possible to tell such stories in some other context than the constraints of an ongoing show.

In TNG for instance it wouldn't have been hard to have a time travel Prime Directive flavoured bit, maybe Q involvement, maybe retelling that story through a trapped early ship or Starfleet personnel from that era being found (they used those ideas multiple times to time jump stories). You could make it a holodeck story, maybe a personal interest of a crewmember that painstakingly recreates an important event.. maybe an isolated colony of Vulcans that they find that treats Starfleet with disdain giving you a window to explore those early days..

It's really not hard to have some episodic content from that era without committing to it entirely.

How Enterprise evolved the storyline of Archer exploring in space and eventually forming the Federation was a lot better than anything a movie could have pulled off. It being a TV series allowed the Federation to come about organically. Not rushed and shallow like a movie would have been.
