How? Immediately it's a tension killer, you now know that even if an important character were to die, there's the possibility of return, even if the specific way by which ressurection happened that time is said to be rare or unique, the mere introduction of its possibility kills tension.
But most importantly, it's a betrayal of the reader/audience, whatever you felt at the death of the character, either sorrow,acceptance or even satisfaction, becomes meaningless, the story trains you to not take it seriously, to no invest yourself emotionally in it, because it doesn't care.

It's perfect really, ever since the show passed the books the ratings have hit the next level, people are getting hyped over who will die and shit in a whole new way. HBO is selling subs for it alone, it's pretty much an unprecedented success for the medium of television. There's no way HBO will let go of that for the sake of some fucking books. I'd say the publisher does get a slight advantage in terms of weathering harm from spoilers. See the major beats in the books had to be simplified for the show, so when the books were ahead you could more or less see them coming. Now that the show's ahead though while you may have certain major things spoiled there's no way to guess huge parts of the context surrounding them in the books. Basically anyone who cares at all about reading the books is still going to want to know how Bran's storyline turns out, how Jon reacts to being resurrected, when and why they'll end up burning Shireen (if at all), how Slaver's Bay will resolve, how Stannis will resolve, etc. By comparison everyone knew that the Red Wedding was coming, they could see more or less how it would play out, it's a miracle that it had the impact that it did considering the book came out years ago.

The show and books have opposite problems. While the show approaches everything in surface-level depth, the show takes way too long to resolve plot points and spends too much time on build-up and world building. It has in retrospect made me appreciate the show's more straight-forward approach more.

Did we really need a whole book (AFFC) about secondary characters we didn't care about? Does anyone really find Sam more interesting despite GRRM devoting entire chapters to him? Did anyone find Asha more interesting despite GRRM devoting more chapters to her? Or Arianne? Or Brienne? They were meant to be secondary characters but GRRM instead thinks we like those characters enough to justify a POV. At this point he seems to love his characters more than his readers does which means he misses the mark on what matters.

People don't give a shit about more world building. They barely give a shit that GRRM forces in yet another throne contender (Aegon) and thus makes the story even slower to develop. Why? At this rate seven books will never be able to wrap up every loose end. So 8, 9 books? How long will that take? After a while you just get tired of waiting. You want to move on. The show provides that. GRRM fucked them over by robbing them of essential source material but atleast they recognize that every story must end within a reasonable time frame. GRRM doesn't realize we have lives of our own.

The books are Harry Potter tier pleb shit and you should kill yourself if you enjoyed them.

My theory is that R’hllorian resurrection magic isn’t real resurrection. Beric Dondarion was quickly resurrected by Thoros and this meant a lot of his ROM drive was intact, while Catelyn was a dead for days before Beric sacrificed himself to resurrect her and thus why she’s so fucked up mentally.

On the other hand, when Melisandre resurrects Jon in the next book, his soul/spirit will have been safe the whole time due to him unintentionally warging into Ghost so when his body comes back to life, (surprising the shit out of Melisandre) it will return to his physically resurrected body intact and he’ll be more or less the same.
