The Night King does not exist (yet) in the book series.
When that episode in season 2 came out, the one where we see what happens to Craster's sons, I assumed that it was the same in the books. The difference being that the show needed to keep people intrigued, because a show has to keep a certain pace or people get bored.
I thought that the night's king, the commander of the watch who fucked a white walker, became one of them and their leader.
Maybe they haven't attacked in ten thousand years or whatever because they didn't have a leader until very recently.

Needs to happen for adaptation purposes. It's easier to adapt the books when your a television show though compared to a film.

There is a lot of stupid shit in the ASOIAF books but, D&D have failed to adapt some seriously great moments and as an adaptation did a bad job after season 2.
