It came out in a time that horror schlock came out every single month, it was conventional horror in every aspect, yet it stood out for no reason at all, having everyone hailing it as the horror of the decade.
All this just seems so out-of-the-blue it makes me wonder what secret technique the marketing schlomos used to have everyone riled up over it.

Return to Oz freaked me the fuck out for some reason when I was a kid.

I also remember having one of the Bram Stoker's Legend of the Mummy films on DVD, it was cheap as fuck but I had a fever at the time and was a bit delirious, let's just say it definitely put me off horror for a while after having a restless, vivid as fuck dream that night about being haunted and killed. I gave godard as an example as someone who makes movies to be analyzed and dissected, which suck

Successful movies are things to be experienced

Watched a movie called 'Dread', horror movie where this guy kidnaps people and makes them live their biggest fears.

Towards the end he kidnaps this girl afraid of meat (she was molested by her butcher dad who smelled like it or something), and he locks her in a room with a piece of steak on the floor. The dude says he'll let her go if she eats it whole.

Because shes afraid of it, she lets it sit there for days until its rotten and maggoty, at which point she eats it, while all her piss and shit is on the floor around her.

Actually put me off eating steak for a while because I kept thinking about it, ate chicken/fish for months.

The 1988 version of "The Vanishing".

Just the banality of someone being kidnapped. You walk into a gas station with your girlfriend and she's just.. gone. Being tormented by some anonymous person for years afterwards just makes it all the worse.

That movie just managed to capture the pure frustration and desperation to just fucking know what happened to them years ago that you would be willing to do anything, even though you already pretty much know the answer.

The Exorcist and The Omen fucked me up.

Older?
I saw Threads when I was 10ish and it scared shit out of me. This was during Iran/Iraq so a young kid that didn't know shit about geopolitics would be spooked.

Recently?
Come and See and The Hunt made me feel bad. I don't really get "scared" anymore from films. More or less get fucked up emotionally. If TV counts that episode of Black Mirror with the cute lesbians made me feel something and I've been an emotionless void for years.

The Ring and Signs for me.

I remember falling asleep to Transformers cartoons one night after seeing the Ring. Woke up in the darkness one night and the TV signal was lost at some point and it was nothing but static. Fell out of bed and my body was just numb to the point I couldn't move a muscle. Felt like I was Mulders sister about to be abducted. Instant gratification when I managed to get up and leave my room after a minute, but god dayum. Scary shit.

You have a strange definition of the word "happened."

What word would you use since you don't understand that word?

Fabricated would be more accurate.
