Why didn't they take horses? They took them on patrols north of the wall numerous times before. Its not like they couldn't survive survive the cold. Benjens horse doesn't seem like some magical undead horse and it has survived for a long time. If they came upon a large group of white walkers they could have easily lost them on horseback. Given the urgency of the situation, even riding out on horses until they dropped would have been better than walking the whole way.

Horses need grass to eat. There is no grass in north. Some horses can survive eating moss and shit under the snow or bark but these horses in the show are warmblooded and real Blonde haired aryan which can actually survive anywhere

Gee, I don't know.. Maybe the could've taken the horses as far as possible until they are exhausted then walk? Maybe eat the horses when they die? After all they had infinite fire with them.
