They've missed the point if his character in the show pretty much from the very begining of the series. He's not supposed to be "don't trust this sleazy guy", quite the opposite - in the books he was friendly with everyone and no one, except Varys and Tyrion even suspected him in doing shady staff behind their backs.

He started the war, the thing that the whole show is based around.

His function in the series is pretty much being the wild card that can shake up any situation, which is made obvious by the whole "chaos is a laddah"-scene.

He's done pretty well for himself throughout the seasons, and it's pretty much only now that he is getting fucked, because he didn't really plan on Bran being alive and coming back as a fucking psychic. He probably would've been able to scheme his way into more power if it wasn't for Bran. Pretty hard to rely on secrecy, manipulation and lies when you're up against someone who literally knows everything.

I wonder if grrm has finished his book a long time ago, but is just waiting for this shit to be over with, so they dont look like complete retards during the airing of the show.
