Lilith (Rei) is the one with godly powers and Gendo wanted to be on good terms with Rei when the merging happens so she can specifically help him be with Yui again. Seele didn't want anything specific like that, they just wanted instromentality to occur, which obviously it did. In a way Seele actually got a win in the end. Shinji is the only one to really control instromentality because him in the Eva turned into the tree of life, which Rei then encountered. That is why he is the one to chose if it occurs or doesn't, and he's the one to shape the new reality.

If I remember correctly Evengelion is a character piece about a young man coping with the loss of his mother and the rejection of his father for being the cause of their split.
The father clones his mom in the blue haired girl and his son falls for her and in turn kills him.

Also some aliens come down to try to fix the human race (possibly by destroying it) but the king decrees that they are already perfect even though his very spawn is failure.

Okay I'll go on about certain parts now that are underlooked. Early on in the show about four episodes in Shinjis Father saves Rei by sacrificing his hands he is forever stained with his sacrifice and wears white gloves (a symbol of fertility and purity) over the stain showing that he has to lock his love. No love without the glove.
Later Shinji falls for rei and is seen hovering over her in the hospital where he produces his seed for her and says the infamous line. "I'm so fucked up." in relation to spilling his seed and not using it for his intended purposes. He realizes in this instance he is not a regular man, he will not be able to cover his hands like his father did. He has to create and destroy. Later he can be seen standing over Rei with blood on his hands signifiying his release, blood and seaman relating to the breaking of the hymen and the loss of innocence. While Shinji remains pure he robs someone of their own purity. His father Gendo (which means limit) is limited as a man and can not spill his seed onto his hands as they are destroyed. His Jealousy of Shinji causes the demise of the whole Evengalion, and ultimately he can not settle and must inflict hate and anger onto those around him.

Shinji and his father share similar fates with their hands, yet Shinji is the believer, and his father is not.

No one in this thread is fucking explaining Evangelion. Here it is summed up in layman's terms.
People suck, but good people are the only way to escape your own terrifying mind.

Beyond that, Hideaki's directing style is didactic, symbolistic images that almost never rise beyond the point of the shot. So Evangelion is about what the characters are feeling; some of which are based on Jungian psychology -- which I won't go very into because I'm not an expert. The main perpetrator is Shinji; whose main schtick is being scared of letting everyone down. Shinji is deeply sexually as a result. His main love interests are a cute german girl and a clone of his mother -- I feel that is saying enough, even though there are more relationships with gay dudes and cute 29 year olds. But it's all confusing, that psychology shit. So I'm not going to talk more about it. In the show, he pulls off the blinders towards other people and everyone congratulates him in some weird simulated fashion that he perhaps thought up. In the end, it really isn't clear what happened, but it is clear what the show meant: People are the gate out of this world.

Movie Shinji is fucked up. He doesn't take off the blinders, and is still good ol' Shinji. He creates his own portal, subconsciously, and tangs it up. The hellish landscape that's left represents Shinji's mind overtaking our hope in him. He still blames other people, as a person of his intellect would. He's stuck with someone (and us) he let down. Everyone thinks he's fucked up. Hell.

The whole idea was that god was disappointed him humans (father disappointed in child, gendou/Shinji)
And the angels sought to merge with Lilith to create a third impact, humans surviving the first 2 by EVA controllers sacrificing themselves to halt instrumentation (unsure how exactly, dont remember)

Anyway the point was that SEELE knew they couldnt stop a third impact and instead sought to 1.) prolong the inevitable as long as possible or 2.) Be the ones who take control over instrumentality (humanity being reforged) So that instead of god remaking humanity in his own image again SEELE would recreate humanity in a way they liked, becoming gods themselves.

Gendo was working for them and pretended to be on their side but all he really wanted was to be with his wife again.

Rei rejects Gendo and instead chooses Shinji to control the recreation of humanity and the earth.

I think the "tang" was primordial ooze that all life emerged from. It wasnt about creating a hivemind. it was literally a story about a parent rejecting their child and the results.

Gendo doesnt care about all of that. All he wants to do is recreate humanity in a place where his wife is still alive and where they can live happily and where the 1st and 2nd impact never happened. (i think the parts that came out where Shinji is living in a normal happy life devoid of Angels and EVAs is the world Gendo wanted to create)

Rei seems on board with this originally but seeing how gendo is acting no different than god and how his vision of the world doesnt come from caring for others but from selfishness and greed he rejects him for Shinji who seems to honestly still care for the people around him.

While I love Eva to death and have given up on finding something comparable, I'd say the show has to hit you at the right time in your life, either when you're young or when you're dealing with depression. The show is hamfisted with its themes and goes for the typical anime "Tell instead of show" aspects to make sure the viewer "gets it." The low budget really shows through in the later episodes and the dialogue gets a bit cringey at times with its half-baked psychology and philosophy.

In spite of this, it's still my favorite work of art simply because it affected me like nothing else. Shinji is the only character in a fictional story where I said "Fuck, that's me." His struggles are mine, I guess they don't really make avoidant personalities the stars of shows ever. The series+EoE was a kind of therapy session for me, something to get me to look at my life and say hey, maybe this world sucks ass, but if this fictional kid can learn to be okay with living, maybe I can too. And yeah, that's kinda basic shit, but it's something that inspired me.

I didn't even watch any of Evangelion until earlier this year, but I watched the original series and then End of Evangelion, both of which I thought were really well done and interesting. I still love Eva to bits, and think EoE still is one of the greatest animated films ever made, but if I watched it now it wouldn't have half of the impact that it had on me when I was 14. It was literally the first anime I ever watched, and the first time I had encountered storytelling like that. It basically set off a revolution in my mind and helped me further develop my love of literature, art, philosophy, etc. It's not super-duper deep as people would have you believe, but it's message is a good one for young people, and it's execution for how troubled the development was is actually pretty fantastic. It's a 22 year old show and it still holds up today.

What a funny world we live in. Im a 29 year old man who heard about NGE for years. The only anime I ever watched is DBZ and Cowboy Bebop.

Rei represents the protective motherly female to contrast with Asuka's provocative, non-familial, sexualized female, who is introduced two episodes later. Misato holds aspects both motherly and sexualized (red + blue = purple hair) and is appropriately fence-riding most of the series between being a mother or a full-grown woman to Shinji (the motherly act infamously deteriorating towards the end)

After Asuka enters Shinji's life she pushes Rei into the background, both figuratively and literally

This has literally never happened and you are pulling this straight from your asshole. The complete series is TV episodes 1-26 and the 1997 movie. Anyone with more than a cursory knowledge of Eva is aware the manga has a significantly different non-canon storyline. Whether the Rebuilds are a sequel to the original series is still a debate, but the official canon begins with TV episode 1 and ends with EoE. That's all you need to watch

The offspring of adam, the original intended inheritors of earth. When Lilith crashed into Earth by accident Adam and the angels were put into suspended animation by Adam's Lance of Longinus. Lilith's was destroyed in the crash. This was the solution to make sure 2 seeds did not develop on the same planet

The offspring of Lilith, inheriting the earth after the angels/adam were put into suspended animation. We were not supposed to develop on this planet.

The research team was planned to be sacrificed from the start as somebody introduced their own DNA (Lilith) into Adam, still suspended in animation under arctic ice. Somebody (more on this) put a stop to it by using the lance of longinus on Adam, reducing him to an embryonic state but not before much of the planet was devastated (Second Impact)

The Angels did not realize that it was Lilith under Terminal Dogma, they thought it was Adam (angels are powerful but not very smart). SEELE knew when the angels would make their move because of the Dead Sea Scrolls and initiated the Eva Project accordingly

Rei is an attempt to clone Lilith, whose form was discovered under Tokyo by SEELE. Her human DNA is from Gendo's wife Yuei.

Yuei was the one urging Gendo on to achieve his plans and deliberately fused with Eva Unit 01. Gendo however thought it was an accident and went insane from it

Clones of Adam, grown from Lilith. It contains the DNA of both seeds but is not a sentient lifeform, thus preventing third impact for now. Eva's will act as the keys to Third Impact
