What happened to Christian Bale?

How could he go from god tier (American Psycho, Batman, Machinist, Prestige etc.) to shit tier over a few years?

He was always up for fun shenanigans, e.g. threatening to kill people with screwdrivers, having corpses found behind his Mexican estate after filming American Psycho or going berserk on set. Now he's kino-dead.

Is there a chance for a comeback for the hero /tv/ deserves?
